Sports bar to watch Super Bowl ?

Hi, I am from out-of-town and will be visiting friends in Ville St Laurent this weekend, and am looking for a good place to have drinks and watch the Super Bowl. Any particular place you would recommend for a Patriots fan ? Thanks much in advance.

Who makes the best sandwiches in town?

Cafe Milano on Jarry, in Saint Leonard has the best Italian sandwiches. It's packed at lunch times, so be warned. They have some outdoors seatings, which makes for a pleasant experience people watching (mostly young Italian crowd from the neighborhood).

Another favorite is Farhat on Cote des Neiges, near St Kevin. Mideastern (Lebanese ?) grilled meat (chicken, beef, lamb, kafka, etc) on french bread. They grill on order, so prepare to wait for a bit. Also, it's mostly a take out place, with a few seats.

Pho in Montreal: 2009

I noticed much of the same, and for much longer than the past 2 months, more like 8, 9 months. For more than 10 years, Phở Liên was my phở place to go. Something changed recently, and now the phở there is not even average; íts bad. I don't even order phở there anymore when I go with friends, though I still like some of there other stuff (bún' bò Huế).

I still see the same woman behind the counter last time I was there.

Phở Tây Hồ is my current favorite, but I am looking for better. I also like Phở Dakao.

What dishes would the board recommend at Ban Lao Thai ?
Thank much in advance,

Romantic spots

Soft light, not crowded, or empty, few if any children, no business people, no large groups, nice decor, conducive to intimate talks. It's all subjective of course, and when you are in the right mood, any place can be romantic. That's why I qualified as "old fashioned romance" kind of places. Thanks !

Romantic spots

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are meeting in Manhattan this coming weekend for a long weekend. I am looking for recommendations for the most romantic spots to catch a bite, or take long walks. We enjoy all cuisines and we tend to eat light meals throughout the day from breakfast to late night. Bistro, cafés, bars, dessert (how about your favorite place to get a cannolli ?) , etc. even full menu restaurant, as long as they have great appetizers and lighter fares. We will be staying a couple of nights at the Marriott near Battery Park, and 3 nights at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. We will be going up to the Cloisters, stop by Columbia, visit the MET museum, Central Park, South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge, Greenwich Village, take the water taxi over Jersey City. She's from Montreal, and I want to show her romantic New York Citỵ Old fashioned romance.
Thanks !

Seeking good values in Ft Lauderdale and South Beach

Hi,

I am taking my children (age 14, 16) to South Florida for a week.
I will be staying in Fort Lauderdale (on the beach) for a couple of nights, then South Beach
(Marriott). I am looking mostly for moderately priced good food (Cuban definitely, other Latin,
Chinese), steaks, BBQ, sea food (crab houses ?), anything really, for breakfast, lunch dinner .
We will probably visit Little Havana for 1/2 a day or so, as well as drive down to the Keys
(most certainly around Key Largo for some scuba diving, maybe all the way to Key West). I am looking mostly for clean, casual places with good food, good value. We will go upscale a couple of times just to change the tempo, and give the kids some new experiences.
We will have a car, and don't mind driving a litlle bit (15 minutes, say ?) in the evening.

Thanks much in advance for any help,

EASTERN STANDARD

Note that ES offers only lunch for Restaurant Week.

Millbrae/San Mateo recs for dim sum, also chinese style crab ?

I will be visiting the area again, and would like to go out for dim sum for lunch, and chinese style seafood, particular crabs. Can you recommend restaurants and specific dishes ?
It appears that there has been some changes in the local Chinese eating scene, so I would appreciate a recent update. Thank much in advance.

San Mateo recs, please

Hi,

I will be staying in San Mateo Monday thru Thursday for next few months for work, and would appreciate recommendations for places to eat. I enjoy good, clean food of all sorts prepared wih care from fresh ingredients. Sushi, Chinese (different styles), Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, French, steaks, sea food, Italian, Lebanese, Korean, the occasional sports bar, etc., etc. Price range $50 more or less per person. Within easy drive of Foster City/San Mateo. Alcohol a big plus, as is bar seating (I travel solo most of the time).

BTW, I have searched the board, and found some great recommendations (I enjoyed Sam Sushi quite a bit). There is quite a crowd of houndies on this board.
Anyway, I started this post to consolidate all that info in one place. Also, if you can, please be as speicific as practical about the dishes you would recommend at each place.

Many, many thanks in advance and happy chow !

Lebanese?

Thanks for the lead. It's actually La Medina
Here's the address
La Medina Restaurant
1148B Bridge St
Lowell, MA 01850
(978) 458-9000

I've been there several times (5, 6?) for lunch, dinner and take-out. The food is very well prepared with fresh ingredients. I like the chicken shawarma sandwich (pita wrap), and the lamb tagin. The prices are very reasonable and the portions large.
The owner/cook, Sammy (sp?) takes great pride in his food preparation.
This is not a destination restaurant, and the neighborhood between the bridge and the restaurant is not the best, but this is the best low-end lebanese/syrian restaurant between Boston and Montreal in my experience.

I travel a lot and spend a great deal of time in Montreal (Ville St Laurent) where there is a very sizable Lebanese population. (Many Lebanese, especially among the Christians, are francophone).

Anyway, I hope they do well.

Thanks,

Visiting Jacksonville, need recs

I am a stray hound from Boston coming to Jacksonville for work. I will be staying in for a couple of weeks (Mon thru Friday), and would appreciate your help in finding good, interesting places to eat. I like good food of any kind, that is well and cleanly prepared using fresh ingredients, from steak and fries, Italian, French, to seafood, sushi, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, etc., etc. My budget is from $30 to $50 more or less. I like eating at bars, or at least places that serve alcohol, though that's not an absolute necessity.

I will be staying just South of Jacksonville, near I95 and Route 202, so still within the 295 loop. Anywhere within say 20 minutes easy drive would be great. Looking at the map, it looks like I could drive out to the beaches (Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville Beach).

I don't know the area at all, so please as specific as you can with locations.

Thanks in advance,

Visiting Irving, seeking recs

Hello Hounds,

I will be in Irving for a couple of weeks (weekdays only), staying near the airport, and will have a rental car. I am looking for places to eat, ideally within 15/20 minutes drive say from Fwy 635 and Belt Line Road ; I am pretty much open to any kind of good food: Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Malay, sushi, Koran, Indian, steaks, etc.. When possible, though not a nessecity, I enjoy eating at the bar. Budget is $50 more or less, though I expect to pay less for some ethnic places. For ethnic places, I tend to prefer the "authentic" places. Booze is a plus, though not a strict requirement. Good, clean, fresh food is mostly what I am after.

I'd appreciate if you have specific favorite or specialty dishes that you would recommend.

Thank much in advance.

Rec. for Korean BBQ ?

Where do you go for good Korean BBQ in the greater Montreal area ? I am in Cartierville/Ville St Laurent area, and have a craving for Korean BBQ. I tried one place on Queen Mary near Decarie (next to Kanda Sushi), and another on Cavendish near Sherbrooke (sorry I don't remember the names). The place on QM is in desperate need of better ventilation. Both places are ok in terms of food quality, and I am looking for better.
Any recommendations ? Thanks in advance.

Fatty Crab - just so so

I too was underwhelmed by Fatty Crab after 3 visits. I had a craving for chili crab and FC just did not deliver (sauce too thick and salty). The other dishes I tried were not any better. I really want to like the place. Oh well.

Singapore Pepper Crab in New York?

I too, am having a craving for good crabs. Tried the Fatty Crab a couple of weeks ago; they use the right spices and seasoning, but really overdo it; way too salty. Looking forward to the suggestions here, especially for the West Village and beyond.

Good restaurants with bar in West Village and beyond ?

Hi,

I am staying in NYC for a couple months for work, and would appreciate good restaurants where I can order dinner at the bar, as I am usually by myself, or maybe have someone join me. The West Village is most convenient for me, but I am open to surrounding areas. Places that I have eaten and my own rating with 10 being perfect: Little Owl (9), Pearl Oyster Bar (8), Fatty Crab (5), Lupa (8), Snack Taverna (8), Cafe de Bruxelles (7), Buenos Aires (8), Tomoe Sushi (8), Rocco's (7). I enjoy all good cuisine, and try to stay around $45 all inclusive most of the time, maybe $60 once in a while.

Thanks much in advance,

- TH
