From pound cake to cupcake?

I made a bunch of pound cake cupcakes (in parchment paper liners) for my daughter's wedding a couple of years ago. I didn't put any icing on them, just some powdered sugar. I used my Granny's recipe for a basic Southern buttermilk pound cake. They were really good.

Georgia Lambs

my son raised market lambs a few years ago through the 4-H program.

Smoked Ham or Turkey for the Holidays? Any place selling their own in NC?

Our department had the annual Thanksgiving potluck today, with some really great smoked turkey from The Barbecue Joint.

Even though the restaurant has closed, they continue to cater.

Refrigerator Down: What to toss?

eggs don't really have to be refrigerated, many people all over the world do not.

Not that Brickstone is fine dining, but they use local ingredients. I really don't know about Michael's. When I asked people if it had closed, they said, hmm, maybe it is...

Fraser's would probably be the only fine dining in West Jefferson. It's not a very big town.

The River House is very good, the road to Grassy Creek is straight. It's a nice setting on the river.

I don't know of any place in West Jefferson that uses locally-sourced food. If you're looking for fine dining, you can go to the River House in Grassy Creek, it's about a 30 minute drive out Hwy 16 toward Virginia. http://www.riverhousenc.com/

I have never eaten at Frasers, but it would be considered fine dining in WJ -- it's in what used to be Belk. http://www.frasersrestaurant.com/

Brickstone Pizza and Past is decent, but probably does not use locally sourced food, and Geno's has been around since the 80s. Their garlic knots are addictive when available.

There is a farmer's market on Saturday mornings on the back street, one might inquire if a local chef is using local food.

For a local tradition, go to Smithey's for a Smithey burger.

Good Donuts in RDU/Triangle ?

If we're going further away from the Triangle, the doughnuts at Sandra's in Sanford are great.

Paczki in Asheville?

This wasn't in Asheville, but today I saw this in a Lowes Food in Chapel Hill; I had never heard of it before today.

hello all. SF transplant. here for gradschool at UNC. need help.

I love my Lowes at Cole Park -- Lowes has local produce in the summers, from a tri-state area, I believe. I will not jump ship for the new HT down the road.

you could try adding some sugar.

Your best reuse/repurposed item for gardening?

I just saw a garden that had several electric fan fronts/cages (the kind that are on a base and rotate) attached to the top of a pole, with string running down to green beans. There must have been 10 of these. I guess they bought the same fan every year or something, or maybe a fan factory was going out of business

Need Boone, NC Recs

The new name is Hob Nob Farm Cafe and it's owned by the same people as before when it was Angelica's and Tupelo's. They're focusing on using mostly local food, including veg from their own farm, Hob Nob Farm.

(The link to their website in this article directs to godaddy.

)
We took my dad there for Father's Day and his favorite dish from Angelica's is still on the menu (Avocado Melt with Tempeh). It's a huge menu. There are pastas and burritos and tamales (not the typical tamale) and melts and salads and soups and all kinds of teas and juices...

The service was excellent. We were prepared to spend some time there, but we got our food relatively quickly, compared to previous visits. I imagine it is still not a place to eat if you're in a hurry.

The food was good and portions ample. The awning over the patio makes the dining room much more pleasant, somehow.

I have Turkey Thighs

you can smoke them on the grill and they taste very much like the brisket we used to get in Texas.

Help! Where can I get decent food for a pot luck in Chapel Hill/Carrboro?

wet corn on the cob

as long as the kernals are still milky, it shouldn't matter. you should try to cook corn as soon as possible after it's been picked.

Campfire bread

I've made all sorts of cobblers and cornbread in the fire, in a dutch oven.

you put a few coals under it, and a few on top of the lid. makes really good cobbler with the cuppa cuppa recipe (cup of self-rising flour, cup of milk, cup of sugar, stick of butter, and however much fruit you can pick while you're out hiking...)

Corn on the Cob: how to freeze?

I've had good results with freezing corn on the cob -- after it's blanched, I put it into ice to cook it quickly. Once it's cooled down, I wrap each ear in plastic wrap, then put those into a gallon freezer bag. If you cool it quickly like this, it's less likely to taste like the cob.

What to do with all of the shiso in my garden?

there's a recipe for green tea - red shiso granita in the recipe section that I really enjoyed making and eating:
http://www.chow.com/recipes/10408

I have tons of shiso, and have used it in everything I can think of, I even wrapped it around some fish and steamed it all in a colander.
