Mexican in NYC? Any grocery store recs?
The largest population of South Americans in the boroughs is in Corona Queens. With all those cocinas for blocks and blocks. There has to be a decent grocery store around there.
"Northern" Thai?
Yes Sri has khanom jeen and they make it perfectly. Check out my avatar icon thats a pot of the fish stock for khanom jeen. Its basically boiled fish with tons of chilis.
Ive definatly seen some other reconizable dishes from my home town on the menu
beef brisket source?
Man western beef quality really is a scarey thing. I've never had a good steak from them.
I bought my 12lb waygyu brisket here http://heritagefoodsusa.com/ as well as 8lb berkshire pork butt for my smoker. It arrived in a couple days well packed. Also , on the labels for each they are labled with which farm it came from the day slaughtered and the day packaged. Cant get too much fresher than that plus they are free range animals.
The company seem really sincere and you are supporting the small farmers out there.
singapore chili crab festival
I went when it was in Dumbo. It was a huge letdown. Crowded, exspensive, and small portions of crab. There wasnt an entry fee. They used the ticket system and they dont take refunds on unused tickets so plan wisely what you want.
My main problem was the seating there was no place to sit and you need both hands to eat a very messy chili crab and no place to discard the shells. Plus most of it was broth and they give you a piece a bread for it. The chili curry was very mild and a bit on the bland side. After thats all done trying to find extra napkins for my messy paws no where in sight. Lucky we spotted the only hose to rinse off.
There were other food stalls there but didnt try them after all the hassle with eating the crab. I do hope the next one in LIC is better organized it could be a good event.
Williamsburg-Marlow & Sons, or Diner
They have great oyster selections everytime i went for the happy hour specials at $1 a pop. Would end up staying and eating/drinnking more and racking up a large bill.
Its a shame they stopped the oyster happy hour. Hopefully they will see that it was a big attraction and bring it back.
Marlow i always left happy and the waitstaff is pretty good.
Diner on the other hand I have sworn never to go back again. Everytime Ive been service is extremely poor but, the food is good.
A Texan visits Hill Country BBQ
Went last night and in my Texan opinion would state that the beef here is a winner. Had 2 slices of the moist brisket, Half inch cut of the prime rib and one regular sausage. Brisket was great and I welcome the fat heh just ate it with a lil texas pete. I got the last pieces of the moist and friends had to get the lean they said theres was a bit dry. Prime rib was out of this world juicy, tender, cooked perfectly and would come back just for that steak. No sauce needed and enjoyed the complete beef smokiness. The regular sausage i didnt care for much reminded me of a slim jim. But i tried a friends jalepeno and cheese sausage and that was way better. My friend also got pork ribs he said it was nothing to special as everyone on the board here agrees.
As for sides the beans were not good but, that seems to be the case everywhere in NYC. I'll stick to my can of Ranch style beans. Green bean caserole was a dissapointment the mushroom gravy was good but the green beans were cripsy and undercooked. This is one dish where i acually want a mushy out of the can green bean.
Also, the bread was not stale maybe they fixed that problem now.
No room left for dessert, man i wish i had room left for some blue bell.
On the shiner bock note i was chatting with the friendly bartenders. It doesn look like they will be able to get it. There are no distributors north of delaware and they cannot transport over state lines themselves.
Ill be going back again after i eat my leftovers that is.
Thai Market Review
Right hand only. As the other hand is reserved for other duties ;)
So you dont serve people or touch them with the left hand.
People use the spoon to eat but you dont put your lips or tongue on it.
Thai Market Review
Its still ok to use your fingers. So if you cant break up the meat with a spoon use your fingers. After all thats how your suppose to eat sticky rice. You roll it up in a little ball and eat it. But, thats in thailand. Thai eating habits are more communal when i go to thailand for songkran and visit family theres usually a dish with only one spoon in it. Everyone shares the spoon. Thats family style.
Fette Sau is open in the WB
Some tips. Been there one time after 8pm and another just after it opens at 5pm.
Get there when it opens the bbq was so much better. I suspect its the heat lamps that the meat is sitting under dries the meat out. Going early the pulled pork ribs and brisket were perfectly juicy.
For the sauce you mix them together to your own tasting. I like 2part ketsup and 1 spice and a lil vinager.
Looking for hidden gems in Williamsburg/Greenpoint
Last find I found was Katsu in greenpoint off manhattan. Small and easy to miss. Its real home style japanese cooking. One thing you might notice is that its run by an older japanese couple. Nice folks but, sometimes it seems they just open shop when they feel like it.
Looking for hidden gems in Williamsburg/Greenpoint
This is becaues its not CalMex or TexMex. It is authenic Mexican. Even down to the side of radishes and fresh chorizo. Only thing missing is the salsa in the plastic lil bags.
Silent H is open and its great!
Being as i used to live in houston and traveled in vietnam. I know what real vietmanese food is suppose to be. Fresh huge mounds of greens and no skimping on the basil and resonably inexpensive. Silent H is more like a bistro (small portions and pricey)and i understand that. Becasue who in there right mind would spend $15 for a delicious pork chop over rice(its good) at a real vietmanese resturant. The bahn-mi is good too but man do they skimp on the ingredients.
But on a side note i have yet to find a real vietmanese restraunt in NY like they have in Houston.
roasting a whole chicken
This might seem all to redneck for some of you but the best roast chicken ive ever tasted was beercan chicken get yourself one of these racks and do a search on some recipes. http://search.cartserver.com/search/search.cgi?cartid=a-3439&category=atmaster&maxhits=10&keywords=beer+chicken&gclid=CMOm-P_R7IcCFQQuHgodpm8AgA
No need to baste(as Alton says it doesnt add moisture) and incredable crispy skin on all sides of the bird(my favorite part) and juicy. This way the bird doesnt sit in its own grease and self drains. Add some beer, wine, water to the drip pan to add more aromatics and to keep from getting burnt drippings making smoke.
Williamsburg Brooklyn Best Pizza Pie?
driggs pizza, great grandma slice
carmines, on Graham when i want italian i always get take out from there im addicted to there lasagna and the pies are massive.
best sushi high end best sushi day to day
For the high end Ive had a great omakase at jewel bako
But, i think i just found a new favorite for day to day went on a friday night to Kitaya on 31st and suprisingly not that crowded. There were mostly japanese people dining there(a good sign) and very reasonable prices and fresh.
They had stellar baby yellow tail hamachi and hamachi belly

korean bbq... confused
In k-town ive never really noticed much differences in the food served but, make sure you go to one that has wood charcoal instead of the gas grills. Otherwise it isnt bbq.
Also, you should know that it is normal to have unlimited side dishs but, seems in k-town they get a little wierd about it.
Looking for good "queso/cheese dip"

Dried Beef
I remember sometime in the 90s we used to get frozen prepackaged chipped beef and gravy. Stick the bag in the microwave for a few and pour over your toast. Wish i could remember the brand.
Dried Beef
Hes looking for chipped beef. Its not the same as jerky. Chipped beef with gravy over toast, AKA SOS.
good weekday lunch in Williamsburg?
Not much by the park for lunch unless you want polish.
I would recommend Marlow & Sons next to Diner by the bridge. They also have a great oyster happy hour or even go to Peter Lugers and get a awesome burger.
Best BBQ Ribs in NYC
Was at dino last night. Again it was very good great smoke flavor the same as i remember Salt lick. Im an ex texan so i like mine dry with sauce on the side.
Its better than blue smoke anyday. On the prices you cant beat dino for the quality get the sweatheat deal full rack and 4 sides = $21. I even had left overs the next day. The only small complaint was that they dont take the skin of the back of the ribs(might be a times saving thing). They are so heavily smoked that the skin is too tough to eat.
If its parboiled(cheap shortcut) it aint real BBQ. If its totally falling of the bone its overcooked. Im gonna smoke 5 racks this Sat and see if i can beat dinos ribs.
Brooklyn Fish Camp Is Ridiculous
Are you sure? Esp when you can find live lobster for just a lil over $8 a lbs
singapore chili crab festival
Totally underwhemled it was the first time i have been. Crab was ok the portions were small and they didnt have a bib or trash bag to wear when i ate it. Luckily i found the water hose and sprayed myself off. I wish it was served with rice such a shame to trash all that sauce. Do they aways serve it with bread? I though this was asian food.
Also WTF was that band playing experimental Butthole Surfer gabage all about. I really didnt need that with my hangover and just wanted to run away.
Best Grandma Slice?
Funny just had a grandma slice yeserday and it was crispy. In williamsburg n7th and driggs. Driggs pizza is the best round here.
Sparky's in W'burg
I ate there a few weeks ago for lunch. Was just to lazy to cook something. 1 chili dog and one plain and a coke = $9
I dont mind paying that high price but the bread was stale and the dogs are pretty bland with tougher than usual skin. They are lucky the only way Ill go back is in the mornings for EGG (best biscuits and gravy in NYC IMO).
Coneys serves Nathan dogs the way its suppose to be and also have foot longs.
Replacements for Tomoe Sushi?
I had a great oamakase at Jewel Bako very fresh. The only other place Ive had fresher fish was in Tsujiki fish market in Japan. But beware the other patrons as they will stare and cringe at what you are eating hahha(as i slighty wave my marinated firefly squid so they can see).
Luger or Sparks for party of 3?
Bring the left over steak from lugers to me. I will dispose of it for you :)
Best Vietnamese in Manhattan?
Yea this is a mystery to me as well. I used to live in Houston and the Vietmanese community there is pretty big. The food was so amazing. Huge plates of lettuce, tons of mint and basil piled high. Here you would be lucky to get lettuce with the spring rolls.
best chinese food in brooklyn
If you can travel go out to woodside, queens. There is a huge asian population there. Great chinese and vietmanese as well as thai. I found this by accident after asking the people at sriphaiphai where the thai grocery market was. They pointed me to a huge asian market were they get all there stuff from and they have a parking lot. The market is pretty amazing so, you would think just about everyone will have all fresh produce.
Back to brooklyn the only place i can suggest is M shanghai in the burg. Amazing steamed pork juicy buns and tea smoked morning glory dish.
erb thai in Greenpoint--er, blah.
Most thai northside are just ok. same ole stuff. some really bad like sea and planet thai. thai cafe is good for easy lunch.
Being thai and growning up with home cooking, the best thai in the burg is Siam Orchard on Metropolitan and Lily thai on grand. An easy way to tell if the thai food is good is that they have fresh fish cakes not the frozen ones. Also, new place called Noodle shop on N6 is not bad, good Rad na (a staple) which is also a good indicater of authentic thai.
