Street food during the Jazz festival in Montreal

I had a poutine from one of those "friterie" stations. Not half bad actually!

The meat at Pied Au Cochon?

You're allergic to cipro, or some metabolite of cipro? Cipro has a half-life about 4 hours and I don't really think trace amounts in livestock will harm you. In addition, cooking will denature the compound and render it inert. Fish are not given antibiotics, so if you're concerned you could stick to that.

Coming from Montreal, suggestions?

Thanks!

Coming from Montreal, suggestions?

Hi guys, I'm a student coming down from Montreal - was wondering if there was any must-trys in Manhattan. Student budget, so around $30 for dinner would be good. We have plenty of great french food up here, but maybe you guys have more interesting local food? Or maybe asian/ethnic? Thanks!

Big in Japan

Okay. I'll never go there then!

Big in Japan

Hey guys, passed by this place on St. Laurent yesterday. Anyone try it? Opinions?

PRIX FIXE, WHAT DOES/SHOULD IT INCLUDE?

I spend $30/pp at a local bistro, and even that will include a coffee/tea.

Of course, I don't think the city I'm from even has a restaurant offering prix fixe @ $225/pp... That's exorbitant. And $8 for coffee? Is that per cup? Because at that point, you're basically throwing money out the window...

High Fructose Corn Syrup- Friend or Foe?

That's different than I learned in med school. Anyway, jury's out I guess.

Small restaurant tipping etiquette

Whoaa... what did you say there? I don't really understand what you're trying to get across...

In this case, I agree with Quine - tip what you want. You don't have to justify it to anyone.

High Fructose Corn Syrup- Friend or Foe?

I think that the big problem with HFCS is that fructose doesn't signal leptin like glucose does. Consumption of equal HFCS to sucrose doesn't tell you that you're full like regular sugar, so you tend to eat more of it. HFCS is also more easily converted to fat biochemically that glucose.

While it's true the difference between HFCS and sucrose is *only* a 10 point percentage difference, that's 10 points over the span of weeks, months, years... it makes a difference.

Anyway, everything in moderation. I still love my coke :)

What's the most # of courses from a Tasting Menu that you've ever had in Montreal?

I get pretty intimidated as well. I'm a student (a bit older), and don't mind spending money on a meal, but I look young and I can't help but feel a bit self-conscious.

Just remember, you're there for the food. You have every right to be there as those 70-year old CEOs. And take your money elsewhere if the restaurant snobs you.

Happening Gourmand 2010

He has hooks in his ears! And he was bothering the girls at the table next to him...

jun-i table d'hote?

Hey guys, was just wondering - does jun-i offer a table d'hote during dinnertime? I know they do at lunch. Also, for those that have been there... how much would a reasonable meal for two cost, without wine? Reasonable I mean, 2-3 appetizers, 2 mains, dessert to share? Thanks!

osaka is gone???

I had a pork cutlet bowl a few weeks ago (katsudon). To be honest, wasn't great. My friends enjoyed their sushi/maki though.

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?

Not many of us here... I'm a dentist (to-be... still in school) in Quebec, Canada. I also have a graduate degree in cell biology.

Where can you buy Black Diamond Almonds?

Costco has them.

Odaki is Awful

The girl wasn't old, maybe 40s? And let's not be patronizing here, I'm Asian myself - the way they treated me and my guests was simply rude.

I really liked their bacon/beef wrapped enoki mushroom dish. Had agedashi tofu, fried soft shell crab, peanut butter dumplings, noodles, soups, salads. Everything was good, nothing was great. Definitely not not worth the aggravation.

Odaki is Awful

I went with a group of people to Odaki recently (mid-late 20s, professional students), and was presented with the absolute worse service in my life.

The food was great, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the food. Huge variety from the all-you-can eat menu, everything was pretty good. It's not a Kaizen, but the sushi was passable for AYCE. I really enjoyed the cooked dishes - quality wasn't so much of an issue, rather that some days you just want to try a little bit of everything, you know what I mean?

Service was abrupt. We were served by this blatantly RUDE Chinese lady that wouldn't look at you when talking to you, groaned when you had a request, and threw things onto the table. I realize that Asian restaurants are not known for their service, and I wouldn't normally go out of my way to post this, but this next part seriously infuriated me:

The lady is giving out all the bills. I decide that I want to pay for one of my friends, so I take her bill. The lady notices and freaks out, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING!". I apparently blew the waitress' mind by taking my friends' bill. After a few minutes of talking about how I want to pay for her and so on and so forth, she leaves and we all spend the next few minutes sorting out how we're going to pay. I'm already put off by the whole incident just now, and I can tell that some of my friends are too. She comes back to take the payment, and she notices that one person put down just the right amount to pay the bill. The waitress makes this loud comment that "TIPS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE MEAL". We're all extremely aggravated at this point, and decide that we're going to actively tip LESS than what we would have. My friend decides to leave like 7% tip. She picks the money up, looks at it and says "THIS IS NOT ENOUGH TIP. YOU DIDN'T LEAVE ENOUGH TIP." They get into an argument about how tipping is a personal choice, and that you can't come to expect a certain amount of tip. I'm well pissed off now that the outing I've planned was kinda ruined by this whole thing.

Finally, we're walking out of the restaurant. One of the managers is holding the door open, we all get out and he slams the door. Nice.

Scientists and GMOs? Organic? Local?

One thing that got me is that so-called "organic" food producers that so many people are obsessed about, are actually owned by big name, conventional food corporations.

Scientists and GMOs? Organic? Local?

Hey guys, just wondering how you all felt about the new "whole foods" trend of buying non-GMO, "organic" foods. As a person with significant scientific background, and as someone that has looked at both the ecological effects and economical effects of producing these foods, it becomes increasingly frustrating that so much emphasis and media attention is being put forth on these foods, when there is clearly no health or physiological benefit.

How do you guys feel about this? Am I off my rocker, despite the fact that scientific evidence has proven time and time again that there is zero to no health or even nutritional benefit from eating these foods? Or is this all just a trend that's luring the lay person into spending more money in a greedy and vicious food industry?

Food Challenges in Montreal?

McKibbins has a spicy wing challenge.

18th birthday

I'm in my mid-20s, and I still feel young when I go to Baldwin's.

Pizzeria Napoletana HELP

Actually, looking back... a pizza at Bottega isn't any more expensive than Napoletana. The last few times I've gone to Napoletana, my pizzas have come out burnt. Both are pricey for what they are (it's pizza), but if I'm going to drop some money I might as well sit somewhere nice.

Pizzeria Napoletana HELP

I didn't like it. Thought it was vastly overpriced. Bottega isn't much more expensive ($3-4/pizza), but a lot better.

Hidden alternatives to Juliette et Chocolat?

Hey guys, just wondering if any of you knew about any dessert places that were a little bit more low key than Juliette et Chocolat. Seems like just about everyone goes there, and I want to impress someone with something a bit different :)

Shameful Bubble Tea Addiction

You know, I'm not any better. I broke the bubbletea habit a few years ago, but sneak in an orange julep ever once in a while...

Resto/bar/lounge for 30 professional students?

Thanks guys, figured it out.

Resto/bar/lounge for 30 professional students?

That sounds like a good bet... will the place accomodate 30 people for food... and some mixing?

Resto/bar/lounge for 30 professional students?

Hey guys, any advice for something not too expensive (can get out for $25-30) that can accomodate a fairly large group of people? BYOB would be a bonus!

I was thinking something like Casa Tapas. What are the prices like there? I reiterate that these are students, so something exorbitantly expensive is not ideal.

I was thinking Casa Tapas, and then heading down to Le Lab for drinks afterward. What do you guys think?

L'Académie - Crescent

It's better than the one on the St. Denis. It's BYOB, and the prices are reasonable. Despite the fact that it isn't the culinary mecca of Montreal, it's perfectly fine for what it is.
