What would be a good, smoky tasting vegetarian substitute for ham hocks in split pea soup?
Does anyone remember TVP (texturized vegetable protein), made from soybeans? You may be able to find "ham" flavor chunks, and they still make "chicken", "beef" and "bacon" flavored TVP somewhere (Think "BacOs"). There is even a "Taco" TVP that my confirmed beef eating man can't tell from hamburger in tacos or nachos.
All of the TVP products are meant to go in long-cooking foods, even tho' the taco TVP is ready in 10 minutes (finer grind, maybe?).
Another "smokey" flavor comes from nutritional Torula Yeast (not for baking!). It may be a by-product of the rum making industry? Delicious!
Losing faith in cast iron cookware
They are damned heavy. My mother had a beautiful enameled cast iron frypan which nearly broke her wrists (and mine) trying to use it, or move it. The sauce pan isn't much better, altho' I still use it , in a pinch. The frypan went bye-bye early on. Way heavier than it looks! Also, EVERYTHING stains it. Boo.
Eggnog
I am having a devil of a time getting the recipe link given to open; #10758 comes up a blank three different ways of trying to get to it from the main page or here or thru' the recipe page. Could you copy and re-post it here?
I have been trying to re-create the recipe from the Honolulu newspaper circa 1988(?) that takes at least three days to make (each step has to age) and is so delicious! I'm hoping 10758 is similiar.
Thank you! to whoever can re-post this one.
what is this sweet bread/cake?
If it had some raisins and/or red and green bits in it, I'd say it was a fancied up yulekage. It sounds delicious as is, tho.
Did you tell your guests that re-gifting was okay? I'm all for finding a home for jellies and jams if you know someone that would like them better than you would. I have recieved red pepper jellies mixed with various fruit that were wonderful. I tend to re-gift anything with mango, since I am seriously allergic but who would bring wine that had turned?? yuk!
