where do you buy dried pasta? and what kind?

I've tried all kinds, but Latini has always been the best for me. Also available at Bristol Farms.

Water Grill- what to order?

For a delicious fish you don't see often, try the barramundi.

Santa Monica Seafood

You might try Santa Monica Seafood on Wilshire and 10th St. in Santa Monica. It is basically a seafood store with a section of tables and an oyster bar. Very casual; terrific (and very very fresh) seafood.

Penang/Panang Curry Paste on the West Side???

Well, it's a bit farther east, but how about Bangkok Market:

4757 Melrose Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90029
Neighborhood: Wilshire Center
(323) 662-9705

They've got just about every Thai ingredient you could want; I can't imagine they don't have Penang curry paste.

Penang/Panang Curry Paste on the West Side???

That's precisely what I was going to suggest. I've bought red and green curry paste there--I'm pretty sure I saw Panang curry paste there, too, but you might give a call just to make sure.

Madeo on Beverly, anyone been for the pizzas there?

Spaghette alla bottarga is absolutely incredible here. Also, the roast veal is a wonderful, simple dish--but it'll cost you.

Best Italian (money no object) in L.A. area for a VERY picky eater

Madeo without a doubt. Both for the food and the people-watching.

Hollywood Bowl picnic

Just did this last week. Got picnic boxes from Daily Grill--but way too much food! Look on their website if you're interested, but I'd recommend just going to Whole Foods and getting an assortment of cheeses, salumi, crusty bread and a bottle of wine; cheaper, tastier and more affordable.

Where to take young kids in Hollywood?

Got to Loteria on Hollywood Boulevard. Fantastic Mexican food, very informal and noisy. They have an extensive menu of gourmet stuff that you will love and tamer stuff for the kids. You will thank me for this suggestion.

Crush or Lark?

We'll be in Seattle for one night and have narrowed the dining choices down to Crush or Lark. Can anyone give us advice on how to choose between the two?

Special "Hollywood" dining

If they are interested in excellent Italian food and seeing celebrities, go to Madeo on Beverly. Last time we were there, Gwen Stefani and Diane Keaton were there. I don't think we've ever been there and not seen celebrities--Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder--even Frank Sinatra a number of years ago. And the bonus is that the food is very, very good (but not inexpensive).

ISO - Good Indian Rest. Brentwood or W.LA?

Jaipur on Pico just east of Westwood is solid and dependable, if unspectacular.

I work nearby, and it has been there for several years. Went once and wasn't impressed.

Best Cinnamon Rolls

Without a doubt.

Yabu in west la or west hollywood (Cork Fee?)

I prefer the La Cienega location--the food and particularly the atmosphere seem just more refined. The soba is terrific at both, but the sashimi at WeHo is also excellent. And they provide real wasabi with the sashimi (although not with the sushi, strangely enought).

Cinnamon Rolls- Stat

It's Maison du Pain, and the cinnamon rolls are truly amazing. By far the best in L.A.

Best Steak Tartare in LA?

The Fraiche tartar is terrific--the trick is in the way the super-fresh meat is cut into small chunks.

Delivery in mid-Wilshire?

Just ate a greek chicken sandwich from Rocco's--they delivered it in about 15 minutes, and it was wonderful. Also, Doughboys has just opened up an outlet in the area; don't know if they deliver, but their sandwiches and baked goods are very good.

Good after theatre dining

Sounds like you're looking in Westwood. About the best in the area is Tanino--one of the Drago brothers' restaurants.

Santa Monica Sushi

U-zen on Santa Monica , a block east of Bundy on the north side of the street. Be sure to sit with Masa. I would not describe it as "cheap," but it is far less expensive than the places you mention and the quality of the fish is far superior.

Visiting LA with 6 year old who loves sushi

For Thai, you can't go wrong with Sanamluang, Yai or Sapp Coffee Shop in Hollywood. But be aware: These are not upscale places--just great food.

L.A. Hound Needs One Simple Chicago Dinner

My wife and I will be in Chicago for four days next week. We already have reservations at Tampolobampo, Moto and Spiaggia. With all this high-end food, we're looking for something simpler for the fourth night. We love all kinds of ethnic food and would be happy with pizza, hot dogs, bbq or anythink else Chicago hounds feel we should not miss. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Where to buy caviar AND accessories for serving/eating

I have been disappointed at Petrossian--mushy, oily sevruga. Best, most reliable is the Bervery Hills Cheese Store. They demand the best quality, and they sell a lot.

Pinkberry or Cefiore? [moved from L.A. board]

Hate to disagree, but what Pinkberry has that none of the others do (including sno:la) is a tang that gives it a sour cream/creme fraiche kind of taste. It is totally unique, and it tastes fantastic with fruit and mochi. Try a combo of plain pinkberry with mango, pineapple and mochi--you will never stray.

THE IVY, BEVERLY HILLS

The grilled vegetable salad is excellent. Despite the fact that people enjoy putting it down, the food is generally quite good. But it is very expensive for what it is.
