Well, again, no one goes to Chartier for the culinary experience, aside from indulging in classic French fare such as Tete de veau sauce gribiche.
Even if they were using frozen prepared meals, it's a scandal to the French, but it should be no big deal to a tourist. It's cheap, the atmosphere cannot be found elsewhere.

Many many years ago when I was a student in France, I was taken to Chartier for a cheap meal. It's in a huge noisy space with glass ceiling and art-deco atmosphere. The waiters tally up your bill on your paper tablecloth. It's as cheap a place as you'll find in Paris that still has traditional French food. 7 RUE DU FAUBOURG MONTMARTRE 75009 PARIS

As I said, it's been decades, it's still there, and I hope it hasn't changed much. Andthey still write on the tablecloths. They do have a website with their menu. Go for the atmosphere, the food is not commendable by French standards, but it is classic. Bon Appetit!

That's simply not true. We don't have a large variety of fish in So Cal because the continentnal shelf drops off steeply, and there isn't much habitat for fish, not like the East coast. The Dory Fleet in Newport beach goes out daily and brings back fresh, healthy fish. The West coast is not polluted, certainly not relative to Mexico. We have much more stringent controls. There is a major fishing fleet that comes into San Pedro every day. Go to the Ports 'O Call and you can buy fresh fish, caught that day.

I was not impressed with Bear Flag. Their selection is weak, and their prices are through the roof. You're better off at the Santa Monica fish market on 17th street in N.B. They're not much cheaper, but they have better selection and the store is a lot more pleasant. They have several varieties of oysters and a lot of prepared foods, too.

The Dory fleet is DEFINITELY caught the same day, and you'd better get there early if you want selection, or any fish at all. They go out, they catch it, they sell it. When it's gone, it's gone. Lots of the local restaurants supply themselves there, so they get there early. I'd suggest 7AM.

Dry Dock is also at the Laguna Hills Farmers' market on Fridays. The lady is a dear, and she always has oysters. They have a good selection; I've even seen John Dory, although I didn't try it. Prices are good, too.
Pasadena is weak!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Maison Akira. Granted, you may have to mortgage the house, but the French food here is just ecstasy! I haven't tried the Japanese fare, but why stray from perfection?
I second the profound sighs for The Honker and Konditori, and also Miyako's with the grease-pit tables. Pasadena has evolved. And for those that can gain entry, there's the Athenaeum at Caltech!
