Cremant Cidrerie St-Nicolas is quite yummy and only has 2.8% alcohol. Sold at the LCBO.

Apple Cider?

I tried the Domaine Pinnacle iced cider and though sweet it had a good amount of acidity to balance it.

Quiet downtown pub for group meeting?

Hi all, I'm looking for suggestions for a downtown pub that has a private room or at least quiet area for 12-15 ppl on a Wed night from 7-9pm. It's for a NGO's monthly meeting. We usually meet at City Hall but this time they're fully booked up. We've also met at the Duke of Richmond but it's always hard for them to accomodate larger groups and it's very noisy in there too.

By downtown I mean between Church and Bathurst and south of Bloor.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

The Stockyards Smokehouse & Larder

I've really enjoyed the pulled porked sandwich but the last time I went they were out so I opted for the salt cod chorizo fritters. They are divine! Salty, spicy morsels of deep fried goodness. They will be a must-get item for me when I'm there from now on.

Best of the Farmer's Markets

Really like their hot & savoury cucumber pickles. Very addictive with a nice little delayed heat. For an extra zing factor the pepper pieces themselves are also yummy.

Best candy store in TO?

Agreed! They've got a huge variety. One friend almost swooned when she saw their selection of UK treats (especially the crisps).

Taboule on Yonge

I'd highly recommend it.

We didn't book it as a birthday event, just a reservation for 10. Everyone agreed that we wanted to share dishes so 1 friend (who's Lebanese) had the dubious honour of ordering for us all. He ordered 2-3 of each dish, except the kebabs which was 1 of chicken and 1 of beef. The waiter commented that it'd be a lot of food and it was... but we starving and managed to finish everything (and were happily stuffed by the end). It worked out to $50/person (the birthday girl didn't pay of course) and that included 3 pots of mint tea plus 1-2 alcoholic drinks each.

The service was great, the place was very busy and we stayed just over 2 hours but weren't neglected or rushed in any way. I took our own dessert (calling first to ask if this would be ok) and they kept it in the kitchen and presented it with the mint tea at the end.

Alphonso mangoes, when does season start?

Update - went today ~3pm and their new stock hadn't arrived as yet. Since returning later wasn't an option for me, the guy helped me pick through 4 large cases to get a total of 6 extremely ripe mangoes. They're a bit past their prime but not spoilt, and I got a cheaper price too. Really nice guy, he was very apologetic and gave me his card so that I can call ahead to ensure that they have fresh mangoes the next time.

Just ate 2 and they're super sweet and only a tad bit squishy.

Alphonso mangoes, when does season start?

Bought a small case (6) of alphonsos last week and I'm impressed. I grew up in Trinidad eating Julie mangoes constantly and these taste almost exactly the same except there's no "string" - just smooth luscious flesh bursting with flavour. I experimented (treating it like a Bombay mango) by cutting one width-wise and then twisting the halves off the seed and there was only a small amount of fibrous matter attached to the seed itself. Eating the halves with a spoon had a great novelty aspect.

So in conclusion, it's easily one of the best mangoes I've tasted. I'm dying of curiousity to try a side by side comparison with a Bombay mango (common in Jamaica, this is the only true non-fibrous mango I've encountered) - if anyone knows where to obtain those please let me know.

I'll be back to get another case of Alphonsos soon, this time the large case cause the small one sure didn't last too long.

Just a note - dhalpuri contains ground yellow split peas, not chickpeas.

Excellent brunch at School Bakery & Cafe

Haven't had a full meal there (as yet) but I've got to chime in with how impressed I am with their baked goods. Chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, chocolate brownies, mini muffins... they've all been great.

Taboule on Yonge

My sister celebrated her birthday there 2 weeks ago, it was the 1st time dining experience for the entire party of 10 and cartainly won't be the last. The service was friendly and welcoming, very attentive towards our large group. We had communal amounts of pickled veggies, humus, tabule, labni, fattush salad, hallum salad, fried eggplant, kubbe, falafel, garlic shrimp, tawuk and beef kebabs. The stand outs were the falafel and these small cinnamon spiced sausages (not sure of the name). Everyone left stuffed, happy and contented with the food, service and very reasonable prices.

Sugar Shack in Ontario

There's the annual "Sugaring Off" event at Hart House Farms on Sat Apr 4th. A day trip with transportation provided, it's usually just 2 bus loads of people so not crowded. There's a walking tour of the farm, the sugar shack tour, unlimited pancakes and I see there's musical entertainment this year as well.

Triny Doubles and Aloo Pie

The place at Bloor & Huntley is Brendan's Roti Corner. I've had good roti from them but haven't tried the doubles... will get on that soon.

Triny Doubles and Aloo Pie

Interesting, sounds like a (yummy) family twist. Salt fish is too expensive an ingredient to be included in "roadside food" which aloo pies traditionally are. One new variation is the channa pie - splitting an aloo pie and adding curried channa (same type used in doubles). A great place to check out in Trinidad is Debe - there's a stretch of the main road with 20-30 vendors selling every indian delicacy you can think of. See who's selling what fresh, where the lineups are... browse, eat & enjoy!

Triny Doubles and Aloo Pie

Aloo pies are oblong-shaped deep fried flour-based pastries (similar to calzones) that contain mashed potatoes that are highly seasoned (usually with cumin or geera, bandanya and pepper). I've never heard of any versions containing salted cod before.

p.s. it's Trini.

Where to purchase Irish moss in Toronto?

In this case it refers to a type of seaweed, not the plant used in landscaping. It's believed to be an aprodisiac in the Caribbean.

p.s. it tastes quite mild, usually of whatever spices you add to it. The texture is thick.

MILO chocolate malt drink is fantastic!!!

Yum! Milo is a staple at breakfast in many Caribbean countries. I too use the stuff from the can but will now look for the tetra packs at my local NoFrills. Thanks for the heads-up!

so how is matignon anyways?

I went for Summerlicious 2 weeks ago, our group had a reservation for 13 people that at the last minute expanded to 14. They were very friendly and accomodating, even when 2 people showed up late (the rest of us were having appetizers). Our large group had a bit of everything on the 'licious menu and I was quite impressed with my choice of smoked trout, veal and cherry clafouti.

I'm quite surprised to hear of the bad experiences others have had there. For such a large group with everyone doing the 'licious menu and sharing house wine, having a last minute addition, late people and for a Sat night dinner - I'd have expected us to have been severely trying the staff's patience but yet they & the owner were gracious, accomodating and friendly.

LCBO- sparkling wines

I love Sir Perry. If you're looking for a light & fresh cider check out Stowford Press, it's $4.65 for a 660ml bottle. Product #364.

Now back to the sparkling wines...

Echire butter and contrex

I tried this (along with many wonderful cheeses) at the Cookbook Store in mid May during the Sante wine festival. Andy Shay told us that the butter was previously unavailable in Ontario and he had only gotten it within the last 2 weeks. It was simply the most incredible butter I'd ever tasted. I bought a 250g amount (in a little wooden basket) for $15.

JAMAICAN SORREL XMAS DRINK

Yum sorrel! A few years ago my sis and I made a huge batch and bottled it out as Xmas presents to our friends, everyone kept saying "what is this stuff? it tates so good!" :)

roti

I like Caribbean Roti Palace, they're Trini and everything is pretty authentic (and yummy). I occasionally order a dozen dhalpouri shells from them and these keep well in the freezer.

Oh, the filling in dhalpouri is made from ground yellow split peas, not lentils or chickpeas as mentioned before.
