Best Burger in LA?

I had the Kobe beef burger at Barney's Beanery the other day and it was quite good. My only complaint is the bun kind of fell apart while I was eating it, but the overall taste was quite good. Kobe beef patty, tomatoes, applewood smoke bacon, danish bleu cheese, carmelized onions. You have to ask for dressing if you want. It's 13.50. I've also had the Umami burger and the Comme Ca burger. My fave of those is Comme Ca, but I wanted to mention the BB Kobe burger because I think it's a good burger for a good price.

Cochon 555 Discount?

They have offered discounts of $25 - $30 dollars for Cochon 555 in other cities. I've been looking around but haven't stumbled across any discouts for the LA version on 5/1. If you guys hear about a discount, please let me (and the other Chowhounds) know.

Thanks.

California Olive Oil in Los Angeles

I usually get my olive oil from Trader Joe's. Also got some from Henry's Market that I liked a lot. I'll look and see the exact name on it. Also, I have a coupon for a place in Pasadena called Beyond The Olive. I haven't beent there yet, but I think they'd be a good option.

A Quick Look at Mazzarino's

Ditto on the garlic bread (it's great), and I love the pasta fagioli soup. Never had the pizza here, but the meat lasagna is tasty. I usually get the porcini mushroom veal chop or the osso buco, and both are quite good.

Looking for a great place for Easter Brunch this year - buffet preferred

Caveat: I have not been here for brunch, but I've been drooling over the menu since I first read. It's brunch at the SLS hotel in Beverly Hills. Here's a link to a review:

I've been to brunch at The Smoke House in Burbank, and while I think it is good, I would not classify it as spectacular. I do think you get what you pay for.

Help me move past the Huntington for Tea

I've been to Chado Tea Room twice and liked it each time. There are several locations. I've been to the one near Robertson and the one in Hollywood. There's also one in Pasadena. A large selection of teas, and a good selection of food. I've order the standard tea + 4 small sandwiches + scones + cake. You can substitute or order other items ala carte from the food menu. My favorites are the scones and the egg salad sandwich.

Looking for Luigi's Italian Ice

I've also seen it at Smart & Final (the one on Laurel Canyon in North Hollywood). I suspect other Smart & Final stores also carry it.

BEST SOUL FOOD/WEST INDIAN FOOD IN LOS ANGELES

I like MP's Soul Food Eatery (formerly known as Miss Peaches) on Lankershim in North Hollywood and Uncle Andre's BBQ in Valley Village. Both have excellent greens and fried chicken. I usually get the smothered chicken at MP and the pork ribs at Uncle Andres. Uncle Andres also makes one the best gumbos I've had (outside of my mother's) but they only have it on Fridays and they tend to sell out.

Long Stem Strawberries?

I've seen them in the past at Gelson's. I was actually looking for a source that might have them cheaper.

Any grocery stores in LA that carry Dr Browns Extra Dry Ginger Ale?

I've seen Dr. Brown's at Gelson's but not sure if they stock that particular flavor.

Salad topped with fried egg ... where?

How about a frisee salad on a bricoche bun with lardons and a fried egg? I've had it twice and it was delicious both times. Get it from the Lardon Truck. You can find out where they're at www.getyourlardon.com.

HELP! Has anyone tried "FISH HAPPENS" taco truck in Hollywood?

There are mixed reviews on Yelp. Some like the fish taco, others have complained that it takes a long time to get an order, and one person was extremely unhappy with their fish nuggets and chips. It's set to come to UCLA soon, I might swing by and give the fish taco a shot.

new Hollywood Bowl picnic ideas

I just ordered the "fall" picnic box from Tavern LA's Larder. $25 for proscuitto, figs & burrata, roasted veggies, wheatberry salad, slow roasted beef & horseradish cream, bagette & butter. Plus I'm sure I'll get some AOC bacon wrapped dates from the counter when I pick up my order.

Good place in Valley to buy brats?

Looking for some good brats to grill this weekend. I know about Brats Brothers in Sherman Oaks, but are there other places that have good quality gourmet brats. Thanks!

Solo dinner on a Sunday in LA.

Doesn't Lucques have some sort of special deal on Sunday nights? Just another suggestion. I also like Jar a lot for their steaks, and if pork belly's on the menu, definitely get that.

Chow hound spots NoHo

I would call that area more Toluca Lake than Noho. Suggestions would be Chez Nous (French), Toluca Garden (Chinese), Arunee House (Thai) and Ca Del Sole (Italian).

homesick Louisiana boy wants gator in So. Cal

They have gator on the menu at Michael's Bar & Grill on Olive in Burbank (featuring the Mardi Gras cajun/creole menu). I personally have not had any of the gator, but I can vouch for their gumbo, etoufee and creole dishes.

Dim Sum in Burbank / Glendale area?

Star Wok on the corner of Lankershim and Riverside has a couple dim sum items on the menu. The shu mai and ha gow are not bad. But as others have suggested, why not go to Chinatown? It's not that much further.

Another suggestion if you need a quick fix: the 99 Ranch Market has an aisle full of frozen dim sum you can take home and throw an impromptu dim sum party. I've often thought of doing this when I was craving dim sum at night.

5 yr anniversary! Perfect dining experience?

I really like Valentino's, don't think you can go wrong there. I would also suggest Melisse. I had one of the best meals of my life there (it was also one of the most expensive meals too, but we kind of went overboard on the truffles).

Where can I find Coluccio olive oil?

I haven't seen it, but you might want to look at the recent canned tomatoes thread that lists a bunch of places in town that carry authentic Italian groceries.

Mardi Gras in L.A.?

You can still get the Mardi Gras menu at Michael's Bar & Grill in Burbank. One of my favorite places in town to get cajun food (and I'm originally from Louisiana). You could also try Stevie's Creole Restaurant in Encino, but I haven't personally been there, so I can't vouch for the food there.

Canned Tomatoes

You might find them at Monte Carlo Deli in the 3100 blck of Magnolia in Burbank (next to Pinocchio's restaurant). I was just there to buy veal shanks to make osso buco and saw a bunch of brands of Italian canned tomatoes... but I had already bought what I needed at Ralphs, (just Hunt's, and the Hunt's was more expensive than the brands at Monte Carlo). Next time I'll know better!

Monte Carlo has deli items, including cheeses, the dried porchini mushrooms I needed, and a whole slew of Italian delicacies (olive oil, desserts), and gelato!

Best Root Beer

I just bought a big can of IBC root beer from the .99 cent store on Sherman Way near Coldwater, and it was really good. Had a very strong, spicy taste to it, much different from the version that comes in a bottle. Not sure why it's there (I'm guessing the can was an experient that didn't pan out), but I'm gonna go back and buy a bunch more.

new Orleans cuisine in los angeles

I am from Louisiana, and the best gumbo by far is made by my mother :). However, the closest representations I've had in Los Angeles are at Michaels/Mardi Gras in Burbank on Olive, and Uncle Andre's BBQ (they only have gumbo on Friday, but it's gooooood). Uncle Andre's is on Moorpark & Colfax in Studio City. Their fried chicken and baby back ribs are good too.

Two of my favorite restaurants in Los Feliz are Palermo's (Italian) and Electric Lotus (Indian). I'm sure if you search around here a bit using Los Feliz you'll find tons of other recommendations.

Anniversary Dinner Suggestions - Valley

My favorite celebration restaurant in the Valley is Pinot Bistro on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City. I also really like Max. I also had a nice dinner at Il Tiramisu in Sherman Oaks which is a romantic Italian restaurant. One last suggestion is Spark Woodfire Grill on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City.

New to LA (Burbank), some specific questions (Long)

For "soul food", I like Miss Peaches on Lankershim in North Hollywood. This is run by the same folks who ran Angelina's. For BBQ, my favorite is Uncle Andre's on Moorpark near Colfax. And my favorite place for mexican is Mucho Mas on Burbank.
