Trader Joe's Yea/Nay thread - 1st quarter 2011 [old]

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I experienced pine mouth syndrome for 9 very long days from a dish made with TJ's pine nuts. It's now made me very cautious.

Beaten to death topic but how about it? Best steak and someone tell me if Circus Circus Steakhouse is really that good and why!

Glad you enjoyed CC Steakhouse! I'd pick it any day over Golden Steer.

Looking for best brisket sandwich off the strip

I've heard the same thing about Sammy's pastrami but I finally went the other day and threw away my sandwich after 3 bites! The fat ratio was entirely too great.

I'm usually not a fan of brisket but I have to agree....Famous Dave's is the only brisket I've tried in town that I actually like.

Beso Las Vegas

I know someone who's worked at Beso since prior to opening. He said Todd English has never spent a minute working in the kitchen....but he certainly was on the red carpet at the opening! I'm not sure why someone would lend their name to a venture and not care about the outcome. Beso is not on my list of restaurants to visit.

I'm going to second QAW's comment. Sounds like Nora's on Flamingo & Jones.

Babbo pasta question

You're mistaken when you say that spaghettini is similar to cappellini. Spaghettini is only SLIGHTLY thinner than spaghetti and far from cappellini.

Best deli and pastrami in Vegas

The Bagel Cafe on Buffalo just south of Summerlin Parkway has delicious pastrami. However, my favorite menu item is their "soup of the day" on weekends and it's Cabbage Soup...fantastic.

California Pizza Kitchen

If you can get past the processed chicken they use at CPK, there are several menu items that are very good. The Thai Crunch Salad is excellent. The Tuscan Hummus is absolutely delicious...ask for extra checca (tomatoes with garlic & basil) on top.....I crave this dish. The Gorgonzola & Pear pizza is very good as is the Thai Chicken pizza.

AYCE Sushi Las Vegas

Although I haven't been yet....my sushi eating friends (with reliable opinions) absolutely love Oyshi for AYCE. It's off the menu and made to order. The AYCE lunch is $21 & dinner is $26. It's located in the Southwest part of LV...near Rainbow & Robindale. They say the atmosphere is sleek, new & clean and the variety of dishes is great. My friends that dine there are big sushi fans but suprisingly often rave about some of the cooked appetizers (surf & turf, and asparagus wrapped in grilled beef).
Check this link for the menu....looks great. http://www.usmenuguide.com/oyshi.html

Good Pizza in Vegas... does it exist?

I stopped at Grimaldi's for a couple of pizzas to go last night...wanted to try the place everyone's been talking about. I ran in to some old friends while waiting at the bar and talked for quite a while. By the time I finished chatting and drove back to Summerlin it was probably almost two hours after the pizza came out of the oven...not ideal dining conditions but the pizza was still excellent! I ordered 2...one w/ mushrooms & basil and it was tasty but the pesto pizza w/ sliced tomatoes was out of this world. I'm looking forward to going back and eating a pizza hot out of the oven.

Vegas...Cafe Martorano

The portions are large in some cases, and not so in others. The meatballs, which they're supposedly famous for, are listed as an appetizer. It’s three average sized meatballs served with salad and is $25. The cheesesteak (also listed as an appetizer) is $18 and about 6 inches. The calamari appetizer was large...they prepare it 2 different ways...I think we had the grilled version and it was excellent. My veal chop was HUGE (16 oz) and served with sautéed baby spinach with garlic & oil as well as risotto....that's something easily split. The pasta dishes were huge as well. One friend had the sea bass and it was excellent; another friend had the Lobster Francese and I thought it was too rich...one bite for me was plenty. Please let us know how your experience is.

My Upcoming Las Vegas Vacation

Since you plan to go to Rosemary's during your trip and you'll be in town on Wednesday night...make that your Rosemary's night. Everything is 50% off for Ladies....even the 3 course prix-fixe menu. You can never go wrong with Rosemary's and certainly not for half off.

Vegas Dinner for 8

I'll post the discount website...although the Chowhound gods may delete this post. You can purchase the coupon on Restaurant.com. At Envy you can get a $75 certificate for $15. It's usually $30 but if you enter the promo code "mom" now through 5/11 they give you 50% off making it $15. So basically getting $60 taken off your tab...not bad at all. There are several places on restaurant.com that I'd go to anyday even without the coupon...Border Grill, RM Seafood, Rosemary's, Origin India, Cafe Ba Ba Reeba, TC's Rib Crib & Andre's to name a few. It's definitely worth checking out. The certificates are good for a year and once you get on their mailing list they send you an email with the latest promo code....last week they were offering 70% off their regular prices.

Vegas...Cafe Martorano

I dined at Cafe Martorano this week....and loved it. I did all the internet research before going and was convinced I was going to dislike everything about it...mainly their snotty attitudes but I was going as a guest of someone with a comp so I decided the risk was worth it. It wasn't as loud as I was expecting but it was also Sunday evening...I hear it can get pretty hectic after 9pm on Fri/Sat. When they first opened last year there was no printed menu, only verbal. That can be dangerous...especially here. Everything is relatively expensive. My veal chop was $68 but it was amazing. The pasta dishes range from $25-50ish. The calamari was superb. Would I go back without a comp? Definitely....

Vegas Dinner for 8

I really think your group would enjoy DB....it's not the type of French food the guys in your group fear. There are many hearty dishes...loved the shortribs. I dined there recently with my "meat & potatoes" boyfriend and he really enjoyed the experience (food & atmosphere). But when dining in a group it's best to try to accommodate the majority so i'll have to second the recommendation from Lrvboss regarding Envy Steakhouse. Solidly good food, nice atmosphere, great service and in your price range. I'm generally bored with steakhouse menus but there is enough on the menu to make it interesting. They even have coupons on restaurant.com.

Louis's Fish Camp (Las Vegas)

If you're looking for good BBQ I'm a fan of TC's Rib Crib. It's located on Desert Inn & Durango on the west side of town. It's a small casual family owned place in a stripmall...nothing fancy but I guarantee you will enjoy your meal and the friendly service. The babyback & spare ribs are delicious....the sauce is tomato based with a kick of pepper. The pulled pork sandwich is great too. There are lots of sides to choose from...my favs are the super-peppery sauteed cabbage, sweet potato fries & potato salad. There's also an abundance of homemade desserts to choose from.

New and Different in Vegas

I'm traveling to Argentina in June and in my research I've found out that almost 20 million people in Argentina are of Italian descent...so natually pizza & pasta are quite common and found on most menus. I'm looking forward to great meals of Argentinian beef and red wine as well as what some people say is the best Italian food on this side of the Atlantic. I've enjoyed looking at the Chowhound South America board in preparation for my trip.

casual italian in Las Vegas

On the West Side I like Nora's on Flamingo & Jones. It's a family owned restaurant the the food is solidly good. I love their antipasto salad. Pasta Mia on Flamingo & Arville is also a good choice. If you're looking for an East Side restaurant a lot of people like the Pasta Shop on Trop & Eastern. I haven't been there but all the reviews I've seen have been favorable.

Vegas best food

I believe the original Nora's on Flaming & Jones is the better of the two. I live in Summerlin not too far from Nora's Wine Bar and I always choose to drive further to the older location. Summerlin Nora's is loud and pretentious...with smaller portions and higher prices. I agree...the cocktails at both are delicious.

Best cupcake in Vegas?

I'd have to give all three cupcake places mediocre reviews...at best. I've been to all multiple times and each time I expect that "this time" it will be better. Not so. If you're dead set against a large cake for the mess factor I would suggest trying Nothing Bundt Cake. They have mini-bundts that serve one or two and are extremely delicious. They also have the most wonderful cream cheese frosting. There are two locations...Sahara & Durango on the west side or Eastern & Silverado Ranch in Henderson.

Las Vegas - best "authentic Buffalo" wings

I have to agree with Justjenn about the wings at Jackson's...delicious. I order them well done and they're perfect. I've stopped at other places for "bar food" but am usually disappointed. OOh...the ranch is great too...tastes homemade. The wings at PT's are small & miserable and pale in comparison...I would expect more from the most successful bar group in town.

Paczki in Vegas?

Today (Fat Tuesday) is also know as Paczki Day to many. It's a Polish donut filled with jelly, custard or fruit and traditionally eaten the day before Lent begins. I've called the Polish Deli on Charleston and they don't have them...does anyone know where to purchase paczki in Las Vegas?

Vegas pastrami crawl

There is a great deli called "The Bagel Cafe" located near Summerlin on the west side of town @ 301 N Buffalo Dr. (702) 255-3444.
The pastrami is excellent but my ultimate favorite is their cabbage soup which is the soup of the day on Saturday & Sunday. What I usually order is a cup of soup (which would be considered bowl sized at any other restaurant) and a half of sandwich on a bagel (you get a whole bagel since sandwich size is based on weight of meat). I usually order the pastrami or rare roast beef. There are often large crowds on the weekend but it's worth the wait.
