Trader Joe's Lentils...What do you do with them?
Just stumbled upon this post via google. I love to eat them as a cold salad with diced cucumbers, onions and ham seasoned with lemon or lime, olive oil, S&P and whatever spices I feel like throwing in (cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper). It might sound weird but it is delicious. I got the idea from a Rick Bayless recipe in Mexican Everyday.
Also you can make an awesome Veggie burger from them. I use this 101 cookbooks recipe:

Folsom CA
The Mexican place on Natomas is Sol Azteca and I was awfully unimpressed the one time I went there. I don't even feel like giving it another chance.
Also newish is Manderes, great beer selection, great food.
Sutter Street Steakhouse is also getting a lot of buzz but I haven't tried it yet.

Trader Joe's has an awesome cream cheese, pesto, and sun-dried tomato dip. You can just plop it out upside down on a plate and serve with crackers. It's delish.
MIdwest dinner for Italians
I think a bean salad with avocados and a red wine viniagrette would be good.

Fav Ideas/Recipes Using a Mandoline
Any new ideas out there? My new mandoline is on my doorstep at home :-)
Bakersfield -- gourmet cheese and coffee? Any?
Trader Joe's has fresh buffalo mozzarella that is delicious. At my non-Bakersfield TJ's they have also had burrata lately, which is a cream filled mozzarella that too is delicious.
Bakersfield...Whole foods-type? Asian markets?

What is your favorite hard to find candy?
Pink Losanges...or at least that's what we called them. I believe the real name is Wintergreen Losanges. They taste kinda like Pepto Bismol and they are usually found in the generic bagged section, where you get two bags for $1 (or whatever). Harder and harder to find these days.
Input & Recs for our Tour de SLO (incl. Pismo/Los Osos/Morro Bay)
Doc Burnstein's looks awesome. I'll add that to the list for sure (as well as NOVO). Thanks for the update on Cuginis...maybe we'll try the pizza place.
Input & Recs for our Tour de SLO (incl. Pismo/Los Osos/Morro Bay)
We are a group of 30 year old Cal Poly grads returing to the area and planning a day of drinking and eating our way through the best the Central Coast has to offer. We want to make sure we are not missing out on anything new, as it's been awhile since we've been back, and also that some of our favorites are still there!
So far we have these things on our list:
Madonna Inn: Dessert/drinks
Taco Temple: Tacos, Carrot Cake
Planet Pizza: Is this place still there? It was in Los Osos.
Gus's: Pitcher of beer (weather permitting)
Frog & Peach: More beer/people watching
Guiseppes/Cugini's: Butternet Squash Raviolis
Hofbrau in Morro Bay: Is this place still good? I seem to recall it changed owners or something.
Firestone gets its own night. So what do you think? Anything big we're missing? Any of these places long gone? Already dismissed Bon Temps Creole Cafe, Splash Cafe and Big Sky as they were around when we lived there and we didn't love them.
Need Menu For Small Dinner Party
A super simple but impressive dish is to halve and roast some squash (ie acorn) then fill it wil cooked tortellini. Whip up a quick herby white sauce and pour over the top. Any variation on this will work. I dunno though, you might be looking for something that demonstrates more technique.
You could start with a soup (make ahead of time) and serve with a salad.
disguising butternut squash
My favorite way to eat BNS is by tossing cubes with melted butter, or olive oil, and roasting them in the oven. Then when you take it out you toss it with gorgonzola cheese. It's freakin amazing and so easy. The cheese cuts the sweetness and makes it more of a savory dish. The texture might still be a problem for you though.
Urban Cute Sacramento - Where is it? Does it exist?
Are there any specific restaurants you would recommend? I have only been down there once. I am open to recs outside my original price range.
Urban Cute Sacramento - Where is it? Does it exist?
I grew up in Roseville. I recently moved back to the area. I've wandered a bit around midtown and realized to my surprise that Sac is actually a pretty cute city (we pretty much stayed in the 'burbs growing up). My brother is coming to visit this weekend from Portland and bringing the new girlfriend. I want to show him that Sac does actually have a cute area with character because he's never seen it and I suspect is doubtful of its existence. Where should I take them for dinner?
Other requirements: Priced around $10-$20/entree. No sushi. Not too loud. Full Bar.
Best of Bakersfield Food Tour
Dewars is awesome! Great chews to take home with you, and great ice cream and ice milk to enjoy in the valley heat.
Definitely try Basque food. Chalet Basque is sort of a hangout spot. I would eat at one of the other recommended restaurants (Wool Growers, Benji's)
El Dorado Hills, CA - Happy Hour?
Mexquite is in Folsom but just a short drive down Pleasant Valley Road in Folsom. They give you free food at Happy Hour. So does Q'bole in Old Folsom. Don't go to Hacienda. The food is disgusting.
I'm sure Bistro 33 in the Town Centre has some happy hour specials.
Chicago - I wanna hot dog
After visiting Japadog in Vancouver I've decided to hit up a local speciality Hot Dog vendor/store in each city I visit. Where should I go in Chicago?
Also other than Pizza and Polish Food what does Chicago do well? I can research restaurants on my own once I get that info. I'm just feeling overwhelmed by the massive amount of food info on Chicago at this point.
Thanks!
Manderes in Folsom
It is in a stand-alone building near Ballies...not sure what used to be there. It's near the 99 cent store.
I love North Coast's Blue Star beer...yum.
Granite Bay
I heard Mark and Monica's closed a few weeks ago! Perhaps that location is cursed?
Is Cafe Delicias the place you are thinking of?
Manderes in Folsom
I ate dinner at Manderes for the first time this week after having been there a few times for drinks. The menu is small and mostly American fare. However, I got the Bulgogi and thought it was really good. The meat was tender and flavorful and it came with a spicy cucumber "kimchee." I was wondering if anyone else had eaten here and what their experience was. It's already a given that they have the most amazing selection of beer in the Sacramento area, but I haven't heard much about the food and nothing came up when I searched.

I think this place is a great addition to Folsom.
Granite Bay
Dominicks in Granite Bay is a great Italian Deli with takeout and a small restaurant. They have great sandwiches. It's on Auburn Folsom and Douglas, by Ace Hardware.
Hawks is a fine dining restaurant that reminds me of restaurants in the bay area...fresh seasonal ingredients and tasteful classy decor. Pizza Antica is really good and is in the same strip mall as Hawk's (Quarry Pond on Douglas). It is the same Pizza Antica that is in Santana Row in San Jose if you are famliar with that (also in Mill Valley and Lafeyette).
