Best Take-out Chinese roast duck or bbq pork?

The roast pork here is among the best I've had--especially the suckling, which is served for dimsum and dinner. Go there early, the roast pork runs out fast and all the regulars know it.

Any thoughts on Lunasia?

It's fine, not the best in SG, but to its credit, it does serve dimsum all day long.

Sushi Nozawa Closing!

Nozawa started bastardizing omakase by his Trust Me, I give you what I want and you give me all your money, and now more and more Japanese restaurants describe their set menus as omakase to take advantage of a duped American public.

elements pasadena closed

That is too bad. Elements catered our wedding at the Asia Pacific Museum some five years ago, and people still remember the food. I dropped in and chatted with Onil some months ago, and he seemed pleased to leave Old Town for this spot, so I thought all was well. Hope he resurfaces somewhere soon, though.

Has anyone had Melisse's 8 Course "Foie For All" Tasting Menu?

We just tried Petrossian's DineLA menu with its foie gras ravioli, foie gras pate, and foie gras ice cream, and they warned us of the ban in July as well.

MSG Free Chinese Food in LA,San Gabriel, Alhambra and Monterey Park areas.

To echo RayTam, most Chinese restaurants make the food to order. Simply request that they do not add msg to your dishes. I think twenty years ago, it may have made some chefs scratch their heads, but it is almost commonplace today.

Looking for absolutely authentic family style Italian Restaurant

Try Bruno's in Santa Monica. Not quite family-style, but definitely old school Italian by an old school Italian.

Chinese Deboned Chicken Stuffed with Sticky Rice?

It's been a couple of years, but it was baked, can't recall the sauce, but the meat was definitely part of the chicken. I think it requires some advance notice and it wasn't cheap, but when done right, it was a nice dish.

Chinese Deboned Chicken Stuffed with Sticky Rice?

At Duck House in Monterey Park, they have a dish called Buddha's Delight, which is a deboned chicken stuffed with seafood and vegetables--a wonderful dish! If you develop a relationship with them, they may be able to accomodate you with the sticky rice you want.

Monday lunch for sushi...

My wife and I went to the downtown Sugarfish as part of her birthday and had the omakase. It's not exactly omakase, as it is a set menu of sushi and handrolls, but it is served plate by plate. The restaurant has nice lighting and friendly staff. The service was very good; the green tea was filled right away when requested, as was any other requests. The food...was fine. What stood out was the albacore and the toro roll. The yellow fish, halibut, and salmon were tender and fresh, but somewhat bland. I guess one could say they were nuanced, like French wines, but as a sushi neophyte, I didn't taste much flavor other than the terrific yuzu and ponzu sauce on the sushi. Overall, it was nice, if a little underwhelming. We were hoping for taste that melted on the tongue, which we've had at some similar places, but didn't quite feel that happened here. Thanks again for the recommendations!

Monday lunch for sushi...

J.L, does Sugarfish serve the omakase sushi plate by plate, or are all the sushi placed on one plate for you? Thanks.

Best of Little Tokyo?

Last time I went a couple years back, I remarked at how there were pockets of cooling broth with hot. My wife noted that they may have put in cold toppings into the hot broth, and I believe she's right. Too many other places to try without having to wait with hipsters.

Monday lunch for sushi...

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful sugggestions! And, my wife will thank you as well, when she finds out. It looks like we will try Sugarfish downtown on Monday. It's convenient and seems to have everything we'd like to try in their "trust me" lunch special. Will report back afterwards, although I have to admit I'm no sushi expert...

Looking for 5 Star Chef of Chinese Cuisine

I would disagree with you regarding presentation and fancy techniques of Chinese food. HongKong and Vancouver probably has the highest standards of presentations of Chinese food, and you would be quite stunned by the visuals. Preparing Peking duck and live seafood and the seven(?) Chinese techniques of cooking can be very complex and detailed. I think you would find agreement, if you mean everyday stir-fry, homestyle Chinese food, but then that would apply to any ethnic cuisine.

Looking for 5 Star Chef of Chinese Cuisine

Triumphal Palace, now Lunasia, was given three stars by Irene Viribilia several years ago, but the chef left shortly after and so did the restaurant. Exilekiss' review of Sea Harbour is quite enticing, http://exilekiss.blogspot.com/2010/08 , but the consistency is generally for the highest levels of live seafood.

Monday lunch for sushi...

I see they have four locations. Have you tried the downtown branch?

Monday lunch for sushi...

westsidegal, by lunch special, do you mean their lunch omakase? Any particular reason...thanks.

Looking for 5 Star Chef of Chinese Cuisine

Chinois is an interesting suggestion. They are kind of French Chinese in that they tend to use butter and cream over soy sauce and sesame oil. I am also assuming that the poster is referring to Cantonese Chinese cuisine, rather than Northern or Shanghainese., and that they are more purist Chinese cuisine foodies rather than fusion ones.

Looking for 5 Star Chef of Chinese Cuisine

Agree with above poster. Arguably, the premier Chinese restaurant in L.A. is Sea Harbour in Rosemead, and while it can be excellent, it is sometimes difficult to replicate in a home kitchen, just as it is with Japanese food.

Monday lunch for sushi...

I know, Monday's not the day for it, but my wife's birthday is next Monday, and she really enjoys sushi. Would appreciate any suggestions for the most consistent sushi lunch available on Mondays, besides Sushi Gen's sashami special. Open to omakase, but limited to $65-75 pp. Thanks.

Downtown old Chinatown

Then, you better not try sushi.

Temple City Chinese Restaurant Developments

Restaurants are notoriously difficult to maintain. High operating costs together with extremely crowded competition, especially in L.A., and gov't regulations make failure rates at least 50% in the first year. A restaurant is generally a bad investment.

Seafood Village – Great Chao Zhou seafood, a taste of Hong Kong

Nice write-up! I haven't eaten at Seafood Village in years. Time to try it again.

Looking for a good butcher in the LA area

Alexander Meats on San Gabriel and Duarte in San Gabriel is one of Jonathon Gold's favorite meat markets. They have career butchers and some of the best prime meats I've ever had.

New In San Gabriel

Thanks for the info. I tried going back to the Shanghai House and was going to swear it was on that corner. I'm not going crazy!

The Shadow of Hong Kong: The Highs and Lows of Cantonese Cuisine at Elite Restaurant (Ming Liu Shan Zhuang) (Dinner) [Review] w/ Pics!

Great post. I've really liked Elite for dimsum and needed some reference for dinner. Thanks for the tips.

Good Pizza in Alhambra Area?

You probably ate one that was sitting around for a while. I had one like that there once, but usually I've found Tony's to be the closest to NY pizza in the San Gabriel Valley and it's pretty good. Brownstone's in Eagle Rock is better, but the OP asked for SGV.

How's the BRANZINO at Angelini Osteria?

The branzino at Pecorino in Brentwood is terrific as well, wrapped in foil and made Abruza style, after the owner/chef's home town. Don't ask him to change anything though, unless you want to see his veins pop out, as he sticks religiously to his old world recipes.

Best Chinese Restaurant in Chinatown

Won Kok has this dish called Westlake Duck, which is a boneless duck braised in its juices with its skin, then covered with sauce. It is a little fatty, but absolutely delicious(at least four years ago:). Otherwise, Wonkok is an institution in Chinatown and it's sometimes more the experience than the food that is noteworthy.

ThaiTalian in Pasadena closes...

I second that. The nice thing I liked about it was being able to come with my baby in tow because it was often empty. We thought the food was well-prepared and interesting. It's really too bad indie places like this isn't supported.
