Great meal at Gaido's in Galveston

I agree, Gaido's is definitely hitting the mark these days. I recently had a fantastic meal in the main dining room. Some of the best prepared seafood I have had on the island. I think the current generation overseeing operations are moving in the right direction.

Locals enjoy the Sunflower Bakery and Cafe. Another popular spot is the Mosquito Cafe.

Galveston...any place worth eating?

Simp's has left the island but they are still dishing up great food in La Marque.

What to do with extra okra?

Okra griddle cakes are always good. Kind of live a savory pancake.

Galveston list

901 was one of those situations where there were two people involved, let's just say it was best they are now separate. It was Galveston's gain as The Porch Cafe is a great new addition to the island with a unique style, location etc. along with fantastic food.

In any Galveston list I think Rudy & Paco should also be included with one note, they are about the only island restaurant with an actual dress code so be aware.

I also would recommend Olympia Grill on the Pier at Harborside if you like Greek food. The restaurant is very nice, has a great outside dining area over looking the harbor and some very good food.

Galveston...any place worth eating?

Yes, they had actually been in business for years on the corner of 26th & Ball, then after Ike they eventually opened up at the corner of 26th & Braodway. I hear there was some issue with the building so they moved to the mainland. People out there are very happy.

I agree with most of the suggestions posted, with the exception of Benno's, but then I have always been the odd one out on that one as most people love it. Interestingly I have had their catering at many events and find it to be some of the best, but the restaurant, not so much.

I failed to mention in my previous post that I recently had a fantastic meal at the venerable Gaido's. I know people like to say it is not the same as years past, and that may be true. However simply because something is not exactly like it was 50 years ago does not make it bad. We had calamari that was simply the best I have ever had, not the usual fried rubber bands from most places. The red snapper was sublime and their famous grilled shrimp just as good as ever. My friends from upstate New York had been entertained the night before at one of Houston's better known restaurants and stated Gaido's was much better. I certainly would not write it off, and now that they accept reservations via My Table one can avoid the common hour plus wait.

FYI, Simp's is no longer on the island. They have relocated to La Marque on Highway 3. Great soul food.

Yes, 901 is closed but all is not lost. The inspiration that was 901 is Steve Griffith and he now has a new restaurant at Beachtown on the island's east end. It is the Porch Cafe and it is fantastic. Porch Cafe has great small plates, I very much enjoyed the "Porch Devils", chilled deviled eggs topped with chunks of lobster, capers and fresh greens. Absolutely fantastic. I also enjoyed the Bloody Mary ceviche and the shrimp pate. Porch also features some great entrees.

I highly recommend this new addition to the island's dining scene.

Well, I don't think we are a Houston suburb but we are definitely their playground.

You have advice on where to purchase, but as far dining? I know many people say Gaido's is not the same as they once were but I recently had a fantastic meal there with friend visiting from New York. We were all more than pleased. I had the grilled shrimp and scallops and they were as good as they have ever been.

Traditional Southern cooking - cookbooks?

I agree with thos have suggest the River Road Recipes from the Baton Rouge Junior League. All of them are fantastic.

I have also used A Gracious Plenty: Recipes and Recollections from the American South. I find everything in it to be authentic southern. http://www.amazon.com/Gracious-Plenty...

Another good one is Meals Like Mom Used to Make. I grew up in the south and while this one may not be specifically southern it is the meals I had growing up. http://www.amazon.com/Meals-Like-Mom-...

I know Paula Deen elicits either a love or hate response from most people but I very much like her Southern Cooking Bible. Just throwing it out there.

Agree with the Mother Teresa's products. I plan to attend the Galveston Home and Garden show just to get some salad dressing at their booth.

What's for Dinner #194 - The Shortest Month Edition [old]

Last night made a nice big pot of sopa de albondigas. Have made many times, but this time I used a recipe calling for safflower to be added. Not sure I noticed it added that much but it was still very good with warm corn tortillas and fresh salsa.

I have had the tamales from the guy in Friendswood on several occasions. They are pretty good, but certainly not award winning. He actually makes a better queso dip that you can get to go with a bag of chips.

Love me a Mexican breakfast..

In the Tex-Mex world migas are eggs scrambled with pieces of tortilla chips, and usually jalapenos, onions and sometimes chopped tomato. Most people get cheese on top, but it is optional. have never seen bread in migas.

What foods are a must have when road tripping?

I never eat McDonald's chicken nuggets at home, but for some reason when I am driving on a road trip I must stop and get them to eat while driving. I also must have spray cheese and Bugles in the car.

What are those strange foods you find yourself eating while driving down the open road?

How did you learn to pick out produce?

Just like a previous post I was lucky enough to grow up in an area with a plethora of good fresh produce. My grandfather always had a sizable garden so we often were picking fresh. At the time we also had some large truck farms in our area where we could get fresh produce.

One thing we did not grow was pineapple. about a year ago at our local HEB the produce manager told me how to pick a good fresh pineapple and I thank him since I have been enjoying fresh, sweet pineapple since.

Where and What Did You Eat?

This past Monday morning I wanted to try something different at the Buffalo Grille so I opted for the Huevos Rellenos. The dish was interesting. As with so many places these days the portion served was too larger, they could get by with one pepper not two. Other than that very tasty.

Had an opportunity to taste the new Budweiser Black Crown last night. AB claims it is supposed to be more flavorful, but found it to be one of the most tasteless beers I have every tried. Anyone else out there had a chance to taste this new offering?

Mourning the humble fish sandwich

I have had the fish sandwich at Louis Bait Camp Bar and Grill in Bayou Vista several times and it has been great. The camp is right on Highland Bayou on Highway 6. It actually tastes like fresh fish and everything on it is very fresh.

Just a warning if you are not a smoker, only go when the weather would permit you to sit at one of their outside tables as the inside gets very smoky.
