NC State Fair 2011 (Raleigh)

You know, I saw that right after getting the maple. There were quite a few folks lined up. I was going to try a sample but didn't...ah well, next time. Thanks for the tip!

NC State Fair 2011 (Raleigh)

OK, went last Sunday and had something new for me...Texas Frito Pie I think it was called. It was in the same booth as the killer strawberry shortcake just up from the Village of Yesteryear. They had a sign that claimed it was voted 2010 Best New Fair Food. Doesn't look like it would be but quite delicious. Somehow a frito scooper shape is filled with a very nice flavored chili and bit of cheddar, lightly rolled in a fine cornmeal and deep fried and served with your choice of sour cream and/or salsa.

In the first industry building is cotton candy made out of maple syrup...mmm...

Looking for a Pop/Soda Named Wink

I tend to run into it without looking. A quick search came up with Canada Dry brand as well as Polar. I suppose any major grocery store would have it in the mixer department.

Looking for a Pop/Soda Named Wink

It is! Look in the tonic and ginger ale section. I mentioned that above as well...yum.

Looking for a Pop/Soda Named Wink

Love it! You beat me to it...I'm singing in my head.

It is unique in that grapefruit tang. Yum! Speaking of grapefruit tang, I grew up enjoying a nice Collins Mix (qt bottles in the mixer section, Canada Dry?), even less sweet but crisp and delicious. Great for a N.C. summer.

Help Requested For 'Best' Triangle Dining

I finally have to voice my thought that Sunrise Biscuits are seriously not "all that." They used to be but, having given them many chances to prove otherwise, are resting on past laurels and not worth a line of cars on the street. The first sign was precooked, super thin bacon when they used to serve what seemed to be bacon and sausage from a farmer. I do appreciate the option of getting a drive through sprout sandwich for lunch. And, searching for a new source, Time Out biscuits are not great either, odd baking soda taste and bad texture. I will try neal's biscuits and revisit Bojangles after the accolades here.

I'd vote for Fearrington...for the atmosphere as much as the food. It does seem like you're in someone's Southern home and, if it's not 100 degrees, enjoy a wine on the porch. I vote for pulled pork at Allen & Sons. And, if you don't go to Magnolia Grill to eat, maximize your experiences and at least try to go for dessert. I'd also second a farmer's market but you'll be here mid-week...so, if you can, buzz over on I-40 to the state farmer's market in south Raleigh which is open almost all the time. It's great for NC atmosphere and free tastes of sweet melon. (My mouth is watering...must...have...melon.) You could also get a fish/seafood lunch there.

BTW Town House in Chilhowie was an absolute delight, enjoy!

Tasca Brava or 18 Seaboard (Raleigh) with 3 year old

I hope you'll be able to visit Tasca Brava next time. We were there last night. It's a relaxed, cozy atmosphere that would still be family friendly. The menu is diverse and the owner is passionate about an authenic Spanish food experience. Even though it's on Glenwood, there is parking in the back and also easily found on the side streets. Last night I especially enjoyed trying two new flans, ginger or clove--fortunately, my husband prefered his ginger and I prefered my clove. Last time, it was a wonderfully unique bread just out of the oven.

Don't think I saw fresh fried Pork Rinds from Clyde Cooper's in Raleigh.
Also, a Bull Dog (chili, slaw, onions, mustard) from any Dog House.

Town House (Chilhowie, VA) - Wow!

...wanted to add pics: interior front, Caramelized Eggplant, Purple Mountains... (I think you can click on them and they get big)

Town House (Chilhowie, VA) - Wow!

Four of us recently traveled from Chapel Hill to eat at Town House for the first time. Words fail me - we are all just smitten and eagerly look forward to the next visit. I am happy that we reigned it in to four courses in order to savor each flavor explosion and wine pairing. If made to choose, my personal thrills were the "Caramelized Eggplant & Cantaloupe with grilled mango, ginger pudding, peanut, tamarind "raisins" and basmati" and the chocolate dessert "Purple Mountains with latte, anise seed, black sesame, yogurt." Of course, the aforementioned olive oil biscuits and vegetable "minestrone" must also be noted. But, seriously, words fail. And, what an unusual experience to feel so comfortable and welcome while luxuriating in such masterful work. Additionally, I have to mention and highly recommend the delightful Lincoln House B&B just up the road a bit in Marion VA.

Chapel Hill/Durham Birthday Dinner Suggestions

Four Square has that "special" atmosphere. So does Fearrington.

Sept 2-12 - Venice to Bologna to Florence to Tuscany to Rome

Google "Vallebuia" farmhouse/winery outside of San Gimignano -- great wine, great pool, great folks. (Thank me later!) They'll tell you the place in town to get the great gnocci with cream sauce and truffles shaved all over the top, oh, and go ahead and get the Florentine steak on the side.

Breakfast close to RDU?

Heron's at The Umstead Hotel is six minutes from RDU. The atmosphere is just lovely.

Not to miss local chow I-95 between Emporia and Jax

I ate at Fuller's recently as well. It was great. And, yes, the chicken is not to be missed. It's the best I can remember having--crispy breading and unbelievably moist meat. I would go back just for that. I also love the fried cornmeal patties that look kind of like small pancakes...when they're fresh. And the links of liver pudding. Yum! And the ten layer yellow cake with chocolate frosting.

Best Butcher Hot Dogs in Triangle Area?

Excellent, I'll check it out!

Best Butcher Hot Dogs in Triangle Area?

Great, thanks! But which farmer's market?

Best Butcher Hot Dogs in Triangle Area?

After enjoying some natural casing hot dogs shipped from a butcher in Wisconsin, thought I'd ask the board for recommendations on what to purchase locally. After grilling, the Wisconsin dogs had a really nice, rich flavor and texture, not fatty like most commercial dogs.

Morrisville NC help

Oh, if there's a beach birthday celebration, go ahead and order the cake from Edible Art on Hillsborough St. and pick it up on your way out too! Yum!

Morrisville NC help

We just took that trip and I have to suggest Cup a Joe on Hillsborough St on your way out to the beach. Good quality coffee. Worth the short detour.
