Shake Shack in Brooklyn

The Daily News ran an article today indicating Danny Meyer hopes to have a Shack Mobile Truck set up in downtown Brooklyn by the end of the summer. The article isn't specific, but it seems this will only be on weekdays with the truck appearing in other locations on weekends. Sounds like a cool idea but not sure how much advantage I could take if it's only during the week.

Wow, do I miss cajun cooking

This does make a lot of sense. I believe the chef from Stan's is NO born and bred as well and it just doesn't quite taste like the real thing. You can't make a muffuletta without the right bread and you can't try and recreate the NO experience in NYC.

I've been going down for years and finally went back last fall after a few years off. We spent the entire 5 days eating. Best vacation ever.

You might want to check out Stan's Place on Atlantic and Bond. I haven't been for a while but the seafood gumbo was pretty good last time I had it.

Blue Marble Ice Cream = Best I've Ever Had

Peter - based on your rapturous post I just went and bought a pint of chocolate and a pint of strawberry. It's still too early in my day to really do some serious ice cream eating but based on a limited taste test I agree with you. Both flavors are phenomenal but strawberry probably wins out (and I am not usually a huge strawberry ice cream fan).

Also the place is really nice and the folks that work there super friendly. They also carry brownies and cookies from Baked which earns more kudos from me as I don't have to trek out to Red Hook for certain things.

Thanks for the tip - I'll be back for sure. Oh and I mentioned this post to them and they were thrilled.

What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?

Boiled cabbage. Enough said.

And Jello with any kind of fruit in it. Something about bananas in orange jello really made the gag reflex kick in.

New Middle Eastern in Carroll Gardens

It's going to be an Olive Vine, companion to the Park Slope outpost opening next door to Donut House. I think I've read pretty mixed things on here about the PS location. Anyone have any updates?

DiFara (Review)

MMRuth - this post was so incredibly well written and descriptive that I literally had to leave my desk and go down and grab a slice when I finished reading it. Unfortunately, it wasn't from DiFara....

Carroll Gardens: New to the neighborhood. . .what are my staples?

Fragole is a weekly dine in/order in ritual for me - glad to hear you liked it. Love the lamb ragu, love the sausage with linguini.

The Grocery tonight

Thanks for reporting back. It's fairly rare that we get any feedback on Grocery these days and it reminds me that I need to make a return visit.

Mexican on Smith Street?

We recently ordered from El Pitayo due to a similar craving and I will say that it is the best of the bunch that oolah mentions. It's by no means great but better than all the rest (which isn't saying a lot). I didn't try the tamales but the enchiladas were okay.

Maria's Mexican Bistro

I agree that Maria's tends to get slammed on these boards and I like it quite a lot as well. But the service issues are no joke. It seems that once they expanded they never bothered to increase their wait staff. The last two times I went it took over half an hour to get a menu and another half an hour to get a drink. Another drink ordered mid-meal didn't come until after the check. Don't care about doting, but c'mon!

Go, enjoy the food (I like both the Enchiladas Mi Bandera and the Shrimp Diabla) and please report back on whether the service has improved at all.

Korhogo 126

A quick shout out to Korhogo 126 (formerly Bouilliabaise 126). We went last night and had a truly wonderful dinner. Started with steak tartar and a salad, both very well executed. Entrees were scallops for her and fish of the day (halibut) for me. The scallops were amazing and dare I say even give Saul a run for the money. The Halibut reminded me of something you would get in the Caribbean, nicely grilled with sides of fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes. Dessert was a wonderful warm chocolate cake thingy with homemade ice cream. Portions are fairly large, service was exceptional and surprisingly professional. Wine list was small but very reasonably priced so we were able to make it in and out for under $150 and have two appetizers, entrees, shared dessert and a bottle of wine. Not bad at all for the quality of both food and service. They even gave us a packet of African spices with our check.

There were only about 3 or 4 other tables when we were there so the place was pretty empty. I encourage everyone to give the place a shot - It's on Union and Columbia.

TOP 5 RESTAURANTS WITHIN TEN BLOCKS

I'm in the heart of Carroll Gardens so within 10 blocks are:

Lucali's
The Grocery
Chestnut
Frankie's 457
Crave
Ferdinando's Focacceria
Savoia

The 10 block rule just barely knocks out a few of my other favs which are certainly walkable (I had to cheat with mapquest to confirm).

Mexican in Brooklyn

You'll be literally half a block away from Maria's Mexican - I think the food is pretty good, certainly decent, but the service can be atrocious so be sure to bring your patience.

Saul -- What to Order?

Nehna - we did end up going on Friday night and everything was truly amazing. I finally talked myself out of the lamb 3 ways and got the other special, PORK four ways and am glad I did. It was just incredible as were the butternut squash soup and foie gras appetizers. Fleur - I know there are several hounds that are bothered by portion size but honestly I didn't find the portions to be that small and the flavors are so complex and rich that I don't think I could eat much more than is served.

Saul -- What to Order?

Every time I go I almost always get the lamb special (3 or 4 ways) - it's that good. Also almost anything he does with seafood is usually excellent (scallops in particular). The Rib Eye is very good as well. Have a great time - we're going again tonight.

TKettle?

I think the dumpling maker is from Queens, but TKettle is on St. Mark's Place in Manhattan.

Actually pretty decent Chinese on Smith

We ordered on Sunday night too based on this thread. It was pretty good, certainly not the best I've had but definitely better than the other options in the hood. Agree on above post re Spring Rolls, they were great. Fried Dumplings were definitely pan-seared as described on the menu but were the really thick doughy version (whatever happened to being able to get dumplings with nice thin crisp skins?). They do offer Gyoza's, so will try them next time. Chicken with Garlic Sauce: definitely fresh and good quality, especially the chicken but loaded with too many vegetables for my taste and needs to be spicier. Also agree with above comment that the hot and sour soup had an odd taste to it. I don't think this is exactly what the neighborhood was craving, but it'll do it in a pinch.

Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill delivery rut

Forgot about Union Smith, but I second that. Not amazing food, but very very solid. Both their Hanger Steak and Rib Eye deliver really well when you're in the mood and too lazy to make it yourself.

Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill delivery rut

Other possible Italian deliveries - Fragole and Savoia are good and can be
health(ier) if you throw in one of their salads. Fragole in particular has really interesting salads. Also Crave does a bit more upscale delivery (but cash only on delivery).

Late-ish dinner for 2 (10pm) - post BAM event?

Pretty wide variety of places on your list. I can speak to a few of them. I love Saul, and depending on what night you'll be eating, they do a $30 three course price fixe that would leave you some cash for a nice bottle of wine. Applewood is also very good. Lucali's is much much more casual, excellent pizza but they don't service wine so you'd have to BYOB. Most of the places you list have an upside, but probably the best food is at Saul, Applewood and Al Di La (Frankie's and Lucali's also very good but more casual).

Recent Bayona experiences?

We spent 4 nights in New Orleans at the end of August. Bayona was our second best meal during our stay. Wonderful food, great service. Our best meal was Stella!, followed by Bayona, then Lillette and lastly Commander's due to really poor service issues. Depending on how long your staying and where else you're eating, I'd recommend keeping the reservations.
