Best sub-$15 wines at LCBO?

I went with Billy's suggestion of TERA D'ALIGI 04 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, (Italy) for $11.95 to bring to the family Christmas dinner. Has a DVD attached to the neck of the bottle proclaiming it the "Red wine of the year 2007". We'll have to see!

best-tasting tabbouli in GTA

Try:
Me Va Mi at Steeles and Bathurst. I don't remember of Sababba (a little east of there) has it too, but it's worth a shot cause they serve great food there.

Early Lunch near Mount Sinai/TGH???

OMG! My wife's not going to like this news. We used to love going to that place for lunch back when we were in university.

Early Lunch near Mount Sinai/TGH???

Is Earl's at College/University still around? I'm not sure if they open early, but they're worth a shot.

Pantheon on Danforth - my little review

Glad to hear you like the restaurant! It's one of my faves too and is very consistent whenever we go. Love their calamari.

Has anyone tried any of the following...

I have fond memories of Bodega being the first place that I tried "weird" salad. I was just a kid, but I was convinced the chefs had gone out to the park and picked some greens off the lawn and sprinkled dressing on it.
Agreed, the tables were very close together, but then again, the place is supposed to feel kind of "homey" anyways.

Your favourite AYCE in GTA

I'd have to vote for The Host Indian Buffet. I could just eat nhan all day!

The Un-Official "Go To" Restaurant Thread

Exactly. The whole point of this thread was to get people thinking and talking about that one place that we all have but that may be unique to yourself....That place may invariably be different for different people and no one should have to feel the need to justify or defend their selection.

Rogoleh - Where could I find the very best?

I know I'm in the minority, but I didn't mind Yitz's at all. I actually preferred some of their sandwiches over Centre Street, particularly the tongue...

Greg's ice cream

Add me to the list of people who misses the old location in the basement! I was quite disappointed when I saw the new place--doesn't look too different than a food court stall at the mall...on the other hand, I'll have to try "stout" next time I'm there.

Anyone been to Kaze for Japanese?

Exactly what I thought 325i. Is there still a sign on the door saying they're looking for P/T help?
I used to go a lot, but the service has been quite bad the last few times.

The Un-Official "Go To" Restaurant Thread

actually, from reading some of the other posts on starfish, I think many would agree with you.

The Un-Official "Go To" Restaurant Thread

The dip platter is amazing at Me Va Me!

Rogoleh - Where could I find the very best?

+1 for Open Window Bakery and Yitz's!

BTW, I think the Yitz's at Bathurst/407 is unfortunately closed now...I think most of the area residents preferred Centre Street Deli.

The Un-Official "Go To" Restaurant Thread

Wow! Almost a reply a minute! Thanks for all the replies so far--after checking some of the restos' websites, this is exactly what I was looking for. I think some real gems are emerging.
(BTW, phoenikia--4 votes = cheating!) ; )

Pescatarian, I was going to say I agree with you on Tov-Li, but that would count as 2 votes, so I'll keep my mouth shut. :)

The Un-Official "Go To" Restaurant Thread

I'll go first:

Zucca Trattoria (Yonge and Eglinton)

The Un-Official "Go To" Restaurant Thread

O.k. so here's the deal:
What's the ONE restaurant you'd consider to be at the very top of your personal "go to" list? The one place you can always count on. This is usually the place you think of when you're disappointed after trying that new place your co-worker suggested. Or it's probably the place you'd think of if you were away from Toronto for a long time and say to yourself, "Boy, I really miss going to ". While you don't have to justify your selection, you do have to only pick one.

This doesn't have to be a fancy place or a romantic place. Maybe it's McDonald's.
Doesn't matter as long as it's your "go to" place. Anywhere in Ontario qualifies.

Please keep the responses as short as possible and include the major intersection/area unless the restaurant is generally well-known.

Best Italian within 15 min drive of Yonge/Steeles

Thanks for all the replies. Juno hit it on the head when he said that the restos are good but not memorable. I've tried Coppi and while I can see why many like it, I find it overpriced and underwhelming. For those who have been, I'm looking for a restaurant that is like Yonge and Eg's Zucca but in the north end....

Terra's fixed price Sunday menu sounds the best--thanks for the suggestion!

Any other thoughts on Le Navi?

Best Italian within 15 min drive of Yonge/Steeles

I'd prefer freshly-made pasta, but it's not a deal-breaker.

I've tried Mezza Notte, Il Fornello, Paizano's, Tutto Bene and haven't been too wowed with any of those. They're not bad, but nothing special. I've been to Italy twice in the last two years and now have higher expectations of my Italian.

So, are there any others to consider in the area? (BTW, Terra is too pricey for me!)

Thanks in advance!

Korean dining spots?

I personally like Korean Village around Bloor and Christie.

Gonoe Sushi (North York)

Abscissa,
Sorry for the confusion--what I meant by "based on the number of patrons" was actually that every time I've been, the place has been quite empty! I can see why you thought otherwise.
It's surely not among T.O.'s finest (Kaji, etc) and I never claimed that it was, but it is definitely one of the better choices in the area for fresh fish and good Japanese.

Best pizza in Toronto?

Another vote for UofT's favorite -- Cora's!

Runner-up: A well-known place among the Jewish community on Bathurst -- Tov-Li! They have a to-die for Roman Grecco pizza.

Best bet for affordable take-out pizza: Reggino's near Yonge north of Steeles.

Gonoe Sushi (North York)

Had dinner last night at Gonoe Sushi. I've been going there for years and I really think it's one of the most under-rated restaurants (based on the number of patrons seen in the place) in the area.
I've always found the fish to be fresh and the rice has a nice consistency. Last night was the first time I noticed how well they do tempura--light, crispy, and not greasy! Two thumbs up.

Pure Spirits Oyster Bar (Distillery District)

Had dinner at Pure Spirits over the weekend. Tried the Belon oysters for the first time (waiter said the Malpeques were out of season) and it was interesting--briney and a bit of seaweed taste. Not sure if that's normal for this variety?

Overall had an ok dining experience. My pork tenderloin was a bit dry, and the calamari was far too heavy-handed on the salt, but flavorful nonetheless. Too much dressing on the salads.

Zucca Trattoria

First Post! I just had to post because I can't stress how much I loved my many dinners at Zucca. I first went a couple years ago during winterlicious and have been hooked on their squid-ink pasta ever since! Best Italian in T.O. so far for me. Their fixed-price menu on certain days are great.
