Liederkranz Cheese in Chicago?

That means we'll have to visit niece and stop at Gene's - one of her favorite places! Thanks for the heads up.

Liederkranz Cheese in Chicago?

I keep reading that Liederkranz cheese is back in Chicago - but none of the stores mentioned admit to carrying it. Has anyone found this cheese for sale in the Chicago area? I can't justify paying twice as much to ship it as it costs for the cheese. Thanks.

Best five Polish restaurants in Chicago area

I'm going to second Smak Tak and Red Apple - IMHO Red Apple has it all over Old Warsaw. Two locations, both on Milwaukee - one near Belmont, one near Devon & Nagle.

live trouts in chicago

Don't know for sure but Jewel grocery stores used to have a tank of live trout in the fish area. Have not been in one for years.

Vietnam Satay Beef

Not the familiar beef on bamboo skewers with peanut sauce, I used to order a dish at a Veitnam restaurant on Lawrence Ave near Kedzie. The dish was called Beef in Satay Sauce or Satay Beef and featured sliced beef in a spicy, garlicky sauce that was a bright red. There were thin sliced onions & green & red peppers that had charred edges, as did the beef. Anyone know if this is available anywhere else in Chicago? The restaurant has long since closed. It was called Hong Ta at the corner of Lawrence & Whipple.

Has Mateos Closed?

Found this post at Yelp in April 2013 - I am not a yelper so cannot respond or email Oscar but I'd be more than thrilled if Mateos ever reopened.

""Hello, I am part of the family of Mateo (deceased) and yes unfortunately we had to close due to family disagreements. I myself miss the enchiladas suizas and the camuch. I have my grandma make this for me because it was her that created every item on the menu. having her at such an advanced age makes me want to keep the recipes in the family and continue to make great food. Even though I am a teen now, I have made it my goal on reopening this restaurant.

Proof that I am part of the family? Lets talk.""

Hot Braised Pork - Chinese Restaurant Dish

If you mean "empress" as in "empress chicken" no, this was not like that dish at all, at least at any of the restaurants where I was served Empress Chicken. Thanks for your feedback.

Hot Braised Pork - Chinese Restaurant Dish

I used to get a dish called hot braised pork at a restaurant on Foster Ave. near Kimball called Wok Inn. This dish was amazing. Nuggets of pork deep fried then stir fried with a dark, garlic-ey not too spicy sauce (the menu showed it as one of the "hot" dishes) including sliced onion, red & green peppers and carrots.

I have never seen this dish on any other restaurant menu although I am sure it exists, probably with a different name. Special warm thoughts to anyone who can reunite me with this old favorite (the Wok Inn closed many years ago and we're still looking).

They had another dish they called twice cooked pork - planks of pork were first braised or roasted then stir fried with slices of cabbage in a similarly hot garlick-ey sauce. Thanks.

What was the name of this restaurant???

Our rule is we no longer allow ourselves to "like" a restaurant as we have found as soon as it becomes a favorite, it closes. We must be gastronomically cursed.

What was the name of this restaurant???

Not in the Loop but the neighborhood places near me - don't understand why they are closing because all of them were always busy. ALWAYS!

What was the name of this restaurant???

Now don't get me wrong - not exactly nostalgic, just trying to remember the name.

But seriously, does it seem all the places like this are closing one by one?? I know all of them in our area have closed over the years.

What was the name of this restaurant???

THAT'S IT!!!!!!! (Charlie Brown Somersault) And that's the one we ate at. Who knows, maybe the grilled cheese was less than $5 back then. I obviously have a faulty memory (by the way, where are the Madeleines???).

Now for bonus points who remembers Robin Hood restaurant, and where was it, and what about those onion rings that looked like a stack of donuts?????

THANK YOU for helping restore my sanity.

What was the name of this restaurant???

Well I no longer work in the loop and since I could eat in my building for less than that and did not have a lot of time to scope out other places I thought I was doing okay. You have dashed my dreams and memories - alas I shall never recover unless someone brings me a plate of Madeleines and a glass of wine. Nice wine. And not too expensive.

What was the name of this restaurant???

No it was none of those - I believe the name did start with M and may have been a Mc or Mac name. And forgive me - perhaps it was not in but near the Monadnack bldg. I just recall there were three or four locations in the loop and this was just a regular place, sort of like Mitchells but withouth the "cache". We used to get a grilled cheese and fries for five bucks - the only place I knew of in the loop where I could eat that cheap. Thanks.

What was the name of this restaurant???

There was a restaurant in the Monadnack building in Chicago during the 80s. It was diner-ish coffee shop-ish and served typical burger & fries, sandwiches, salads etc. There were three or four locations around the downtown Chicago area. Does anyone remember the name of these???

What's your favorite box cookie

Did you ever find your Priory Crumble? I have come across a recipe or two and they are not hard to make. Perhaps not exactly like the Harrod's version but moreso than a wheatmeal biscuit or a pecan sandy.

Where to find bulgoki omelet?

I searched the board but there are numerous spellings of bulgoki - I used to get a bulgoki omelet at a restaurant called Pusan House in Rogers Park. Alas, long gone. Pat Bruno suggested a diner on Irving Park near Ashland but I was unable to get one there. Any leads on where to find this delicacy, usually served with rice and gravy? But I'll even take dry toast.

Korean Fried Chicken

Chicago Kalbi House, 3752 W Lawrence Ave near Pulaski, has on their menu the following:

Karaage Deep-fried, seasoned chicken wings (appetizer section) and
Dak - Bokum Chicken wing in a spicy marinade

The karaage is similar to what is described here, dry and sauceless. The Dak Bokum is similar except with a sauce poured over.

Yes, unfortunately, that is the disconnected number I mentioned.

Does anyone know where Mateos has gone?

Has Mateos Closed?

We eat frequently at Mateos Mexican Restaurant near Oak Park Blvd. on Montrose. For the past several weeks the phone has not been answered and the place is dark with mail piled up in the lobby. This weekend we find the phone has been disconnected with no further information available. Anybody know where Mateos has gone, or if they're gone for good?
