Lunch near the Brooklyn Botanic garden
Thank you, I will check those threads. I guess in part I was looking for specific recommendations that are a short walk from the garden because of the 5 year old, and also places that serve lunch during the weekdays (I checked out Franny's and they do not).
Lunch near the Brooklyn Botanic garden
Looking for a good lunch spot near the garden for a weekday trip to the garden with my 5 year old. He is well behaved and eats a lot of different foods.
Place to grab treats for a picnic in the park near the Whitney museum?
It is such a beautiful day! Just looking for some tasty picnic fare to take to central park
Places in the CBD/Warehouse
Luke has a full menu of brasserie type fare, and they also have a great happy hour from 4-6 I believe, when the raw bar and drinks are 50 percent off. I didn't try the other food, but I highly recommend the oysters and gulf shrimp there. The best oysters I had on the trip were the pan roasted oysters at Couchon. At Herbsaint I had the shrimp and grits and the lamb neck, both excellent. My husband had the baked crab and we both thought it was a little bland. He had the curried shrimp for his main and liked it. The chocolate pudding cake was ridiculously rich and good, if you like that kind of dessert. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments! We had a fantastic weekend of full bore eating. Highlights were: happy hour at Luke--we had a dozen oysters, half dozen shrimp, and a few beers. The wonderful oyster guy behind the bar gave us a additional half dozen oysters for free so we could taste different kinds, he even set up a blind taste test for us!
Lunch at Couchon was terrific. When we sat down, a very elegant lady was dining alone at the table next to us. She had the pan roasted oysters, the mushroom salad, and a glass of white wine. I followed her lead and it was the perfect lunch (of course we ordered a bunch of other stuff too!) we got to talking and she ended up giving us most of her dessert. What a town.
We had a very good dinner at Patois, but I thought Herbsaint was better. Ruby slipper for breakfast--my husbands shrimp and grits were quite good but my oatmeal raisin pancakes were too heavy. We had a fun before dinner beer at Circle Bar--i love that place.
Thanks again for helping to make it a great eating adventure!

Wow, thank you so much for the great list, and the links too! I love Chowhound.

we will be in New Orleans weekend, I am beyond excited! Our big dinner at Herbsaint is already planned, but I would love suggestions in the area of our hotel (on Camp street) for breakfast, lunch, bakeries, cocktails or any great food/live music experiences. We are from NYC and are open to any type of food, any price range. Thank you!
St. Petersburg/Tampa area restaurant recommendations please--GOOD eats!!
Just to clarify, we will be staying in St. Pete Beach, and we will have a car.
St. Petersburg/Tampa area restaurant recommendations please--GOOD eats!!
I will be in St. Petersburg Florida at the end of Feb. traveling with my 65 year old mother and I would love some recommendations for great places to eat. Any type of food and price range is OK, we are adventurous eaters. Not really looking for wild night-life, needless to say. I would particularly like to hear about a nice place to take her for dinner and some fun affordable lunch spots.
Thanks chowhounders, you never steer me wrong!
East Village Thai
We are lower east village/lower east side, so probably north of 14th street will not deliver. I agree that holy basil is over-priced for what you get, but maybe worth another try.
East Village Thai
Yes, I know Thai in Manhattan is generally terrible. I am not looking for anything miraculous, just a decent place to get take-out on a regular basis in the East Village/Lower east side. I have had horrible experiences with a few Thai places near me, including, not a shock, an awful place called "One More Thai" on Clinton street. HELP!!
Mobile, Alabama--looking for restaurant recommendations
I will be in Mobile next week for a professional conference. Looking for a great place to eat on Friday night. I don't know anyone there so I will probably be dining alone. No real restrictions on type of food or price, anything from a higher end place to a great BBQ joint would be welcome. I live in New York City, so I would love to find a more regional place that wouldn't be available here (ie not Sushi or something I can get easily in NYC)
Staying at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel, 64 South Water Street and I will not have a car, so something walkable or a cab ride away is necessary.
Thanks Chowhounds!!!
mission district eats/take-out
staying with some friends in the SF mission district. They have a new baby, so I am looking for places where we can pick up good food to bring to them, great bakeries for morning coffee and breakfast, and food markets to stock up on supplies. Ideally places we can walk to as we will not have a car. They live on 26th street near Mission St. We love food and eating out but we're looking for laid back places that are OK with kids (aforementioned baby and our toddler).
Thanks!
holiday lunch
that is so funny, I literally just looked up Fleur do sel before I checked for replies! Thanks, we are clearly on the same wave-length,
holiday lunch
planning a lunch on saturday with a friend, we both live in the city, looking for:
tasty food, warm comfortable atmosphere, good drinks/cocktails, can be somewhat pricey but not super-expensive, preferably down-town, and it would be fun to try a new or new-ish place. Thanks all!
Miami Breakfast
Looking for a delicious late morning breakfast in South Beach, I am staying at 16th St. and Washington Avenue and will not have a car.
Flagstaff dining with kids
Looking for good food, reasonable and kid-friendly. Would love to hear about places with outdoor seating, great breakfast options, casual places with beer and good burgers. We are from New York so we love great food, but we get plenty of upscale dining at home.
Tompkins Square bakery: What Happened???
They have been closed at odd hours for a couple of weeks and today I noticed a for rent sign. I loved this neighborhood bakery and I would really appreciate it if anyone could tell me why they closed and if they are moving to a new location. Thanks!

East Village Ice Cream--Ave. B @ 13th
OK, this place is no Laboratorio del Gelato. BUT, if you are further north and want a summer treat, it has a lot going for it. Rather than a richly flavored gelato, they are going for a classic american cone and I think it is very well done here. The ice cream is freshly made and the owner is super enthusiastic about his product. (I think he used to work at the Brooklyn ice cream factory) The mint chocolate chip is made with fresh mint and it is excellent. I have also tried the butter pecan and strawberry (both very good), and the blueberry (average).
For anyone who cares about this, the place is very kid friendly too--we brought our baby there with a stroller the other night and the owner hustled to the door and lifted the stroller inside for us.
I think it is a great addition to the neighborhood. Anyone else tried any of the other flavors?
It is located on Avenue B between 13-14th streets
grand sichuan St. Marks--inferior to other locations
Had lunch at the St. Mark's branch the other day--we used to love the Chelsea and mid-town west locations when we lived on the west side. Nothing we ordered had the flavor or snap of the other locations. We hade spinach with ginger, kung pao chicken, glass noodles with pork, and a soup with chicken and pea shoots. The kung pao and glass noodles in particular were bland, while our memories of them from chelsea were spicy and flavorful. Anyone noticed this location is much worse than the others, or have they all gone down-hill?
Need dish recommendations for Five Points
I have to weigh in and say that I like Five Points, but i did NOT like that baked pasta dish--way too much melted cheese that had separated and gone oily, not much flavor. I used to love their buttermilk chicken, go for that if it is on the menu. Burgers are also good.
Source for lime leaves, other than Chinatown
I know about the terrific Thai store in Chinatown, but hoping to find some alternative sources for fresh or frozen lime leaves in Manhattan.
Please help! Planning Rehersal Dinner
I had a wonderful rehearsal dinner at Savoy in Soho a couple of years ago. They have an upstairs room that accomodates just exactly the number of people you are talking about, and the food was great, also a warm atmosphere.
take-out for a picnic in Park Slope
Looking to have a picnic in Prospect park on this beautiful Monday--where would be a great place in Park Slope to get provisions?
Win49 Gone!
I am really sorry to see this place go. I had sort of wondered how they got away with charging such reasonable prices for so much food. They always seemed busy when I was there, with lots of phone orders too. I would echo the OP, does anyone know of a comparable takeout place?
celebratory lunch near Wall street
My friend works near Wall street and I am taking her out for a birthday lunch next week. Looking for a nice place to celebrate with good food, where we can get in and out during a reasonable work lunch hour. Only cuisine rule is no sushi. Thanks!
great bakeries in East Village/StyTown area
try Tompkins Square bakery, on the north side of Tompkins Square park--great chocolate chip coconut cookies, almond croissants (not traditional french croissants at all, but tasty)
