Wok-n-Roll closed Torchy's gonna open

I just discovered they were closed last night. How sad. They were open at least 15 years, as I clearly remember the first trip I made there in the early/mid 90s, although I'm pretty sure it was under different ownership back then. I find Torchy's pretty meh overall, but there are certainly a lot worse places that could be going there.

Dim Sum, Lamar Blvd.

I've had dimsum in Hong Kong and in Guangzhou and didn't see any carts. I'm told that carts are a little old fashioned and few places do it that way anymore.

Dim Sum, Lamar Blvd.

I'm not at all a fan of the normal dimsum experience. I don't like the noisy, crowded atmosphere and I don't like playing choose your adventure pulling random dishes from carts. It's just not for me. So, getsumdimsum was an absolute pleasure. I love the ordering process. You know exactly what the options are and you can order exactly what you want, when you want it. The dishes were freshly prepared (not sitting on carts for 30 minutes) and quite good. The atmosphere is typical fast casual - comfortable and pleasant, especially compared to the alternatives. It's probably not the place to go when you have a large group, but I think it's perfect for a quick lunch. I'll definitely be back.

Good burger in Arboretum area

Unfortunately, that location is just a drive through. That's no fun...

Good burger in Arboretum area

I stopped by there. I tried veggie burger #1. It was good, but it didn't stand out. I prefer the black bean burger at Mooyah's. I did think the elevation fries were interesting. They are extremely thin and quite unlike anything else in the area. I definitely plan on giving it another try, but unless veggie burger 2 wows me, it won't make it all that high in the lunch rotation.

Five Guys VS. Mooyah

I like Mooyah's much more, but Mooyah's quality is very inconsistent. On a good day, they are great. But other days it's a bit meh.

Cabo Bob's Burritos

I didn't find out about this place until recently and went for the first time tonight. I thought the burritos were very good. It was definitely a cut above freebirds/chipotle, both of which I consider fine in a pinch. To me, the taste and style reminded me a lot of Mission Burritos in Houston. I still considered Chango's to have the best burrito in town, but I definitely plan to hit up Cabo Bob's from time to time.

Maki - Sushi rolls/wraps in Arbor Walk (Mopac & 360)

I never met a fast food sushi I thought was decent until now. While it's not first class sushi, I thought it was really good for a quick light meal. I was not impressed by their side options. I had high hopes for the seaweed salad, but the serving was tiny for the price and it was not that great.

As for the ambiance, I think it's exactly right for this kind of place. It's a great place to sit and read for a while or chat. I don't know how it was too noisy, but maybe it could be like that during the lunch rush. I've been in the early afternoon and evening and it was very pleasant.

Breakfast Burritos vs. Tacos?

Someone mentioned it earlier, but Super Burrito does a great breakfast burrito, at least by Austin standards. I found them a bit better than the Taco Shack breakfast burritos. I also love the Chango's breakfast burrito, but they have a very different style than your typical breakfast burrito.

Fuego's in dire straits!

I went once and was seriously underwhelmed both with the food and the menu. I can't see myself ever giving them another chance.

New Restaurant opening soon-Mooyah Burgers

I've been twice since the opening, more for the newness than for anything else. The food is quite good - especially the fries. And, if anyone is wondering, the veggie burger is quite good. It's a black bean patty that sort of reminds me of the morningstar spicy black bean burger.

The crowds were really big when I went at lunch time, which when added to the overall fast-food feel of the place, was a real turn-off for me. The second time I went later in the day and had a much more pleasant meal.

Brooklyn Pie Company?

I had a slice at the Mesa location today. I've previously been to the La Frontera location, but I found the atmosphere there so terrible that I didn't want to return. (small store, unbearably loud inside, poor outside seating) The Mesa location was much friendlier in that regard, so I liked it a lot more.

The pizza itself was good. I won't say great, but it was good. It was a little oily and I wish the crust were just a tad crispier. I also think the slices are too big. I would much rather have a traditional slice size and have the option for a second one if I'm hungry than to be forced to get the larger size. (I'm not the kind of guy who can not eat what I've ordered) If there's one thing that will keep me from going on the A-list lunch cycle, it's the size. However, given that there is absolutely no competition in the area for pizza by the slice, it's definitely in rotation without hesitation.

As a side note, the menu in the store said they do slices until 5pm. (the website says 2pm) That makes it a lunch-only place for me. I really wish the places would offer slices in the evening. Oh well.

Mighty Fine Burgers - Arbor Walk

I suppose it's silly to think they would, but do they do a veggie burger?

Anyone have an opinion on Zen?

Zen is really good for the price. I'm not sure what dishes you guys are ordering, but I've been really happy with variety of my favorites. I think as long as you stay away from the sushi, which is really overpriced for what you get, you'll do really well at Zen.

As a bonus, if you are health conscious, not only are super healthy, but they have very good nutritional information there to help you make a good decisions. Not many local places do that, and I really appreciate it.
