Another date, another meal

We went to Corner Table and it was fantastic! Potato blini with beets for appetizer, lamb shoulder with carrot puree, potato gnocchi and some kind of mint sauce for the main. Excellent wine. Amazing affogato (though I could have done without the cookie) for dessert. Oh, and their olive bread is fantastic. Service was a little too casual and trying to be cool, but otherwise everything was great. Thanks for your help, everyone!

Went to Cafe Ena tonight with a friend, and it was great! The ceviche was fantastic. We also had beer battered shrimp appetizer, the pork special and churros for dessert. Excellent. So excited to have such a nice cozy place nearby.

awww, don't be silly! your recommendations were lovely! cave vin sounds amazing but it's quite the hike for walking. i'm thinking corner table.

I'm surprised by the number of people saying Piccolo is loud! It looks so small and quiet. thanks for the heads up on that!

Tell me more about Corner Table!

Thanks so much! I adore Alma but like I said above, I'd like it to be somewhere we can walk to from my place. Somewhere in Kingfield/East Harriet....

Another date, another meal

Hmmmm. I've looked at the menu again after reading your comments and I'm starting to think Piccolo might not be the best choice for us. He considers himself a foodie but isn't necessarily adventurous. He prefers seafood usually; he likes to eat light. I'm thinking that Piccolo might be a bit too much this early? He wanted to go somewhere cozy in my neighbourhood, and I was hoping to work a walk into it. I'm still thinking maybe the Grand Cafe is the best bet? They have a good wine list too, and this is important to him. I'm not a fan of Blackbird at all. I think it's unexciting and often not very well executed. Price isn't really an issue though, so I'll look into those other places.

Another date, another meal

Since y'all were so helpful last time. 4th date. Looking for a cozy, intimate neighborhood restaurant. I'm thinking either Grand Cafe or Piccolo. I've been to Grand Cafe a lot for brunch but never dinner. I'm less excited and leaning towards Piccolo. What do you all think?

Lunch date

So we went to Sea Change. It was... just okay. I had the shrimp and grits with a poached egg. The shrimp was excellent...if sparse. The grits were completely bland. I mean, really terrible. I had to add a lot of salt and pepper and I never, EVER salt my food at restaurants. The poached egg was a very weak poach. The ratio of shrimp to grits was less than desirable too. My friend had arctic char that came with white bean puree and pickled vegetables. His was good but nothing to write home about. We had some good wine. The service was excellent. We got complimentary desserts. The location was stunning too, and very romantic.

OH - and we were the only people there for most of our meal... ha ha. Thanks so much for the recommendations!

Hahahaha....it'll take more than that to embarrass me! :)

Masu sounds AMAZING and I've got my eye on it for a friend-hangout....or a chowhound meetup? Obento-ya is in the danger zone, so to speak. Or, a little too close. Same for Sushi Tango. You're good, soupkitten.

Vincent's a usual haunt for him. I'm thinking I'm gonna suggest Sea Change. Have you eaten there? After looking at the menu, I really want the shrimp and grits with poached egg. YUM. Plus, I've never been to the Guthrie (only been here for under 2 yrs) and it could be a fun spot to be at together.

Barbette or Lucia's would be okay except that I go to those places often and think this could be a good/fun opportunity to go somewhere else. Plus, don't you think Minneapolis is tiny? Not really ready to bump into (my) friends or colleagues yet.

definitely open to sushi and haven't found anything good here yet, so do tell!

i think st paul is out. we both work in minneapolis and have to get back. downmarket/funky works for me...i could try introducing him to something.

Lunch date

Hello everyone,

I'm going on my third date with someone I like a lot, who is outside my social circle (and age group). He likes food a lot but I think I'm more adventurous. His tastes run to the fancy. He suggested the Calhoun Beach Club restaurant. I just looked into it and the food doesn't seem very good. Any suggestions? It will be a weekday lunch date. It doesn't really matter where it is as long as it is not out in the suburbs. Our first official date was at a very nice, old school restaurant downtown (don't really want to say on here); second date was an amazing home-cooked dinner. Thanks!!!

4 days in Chicago

Thank you so much for these recommendations!
What do you think about Lula?

4 days in Chicago

Please help! :)

4 days in Chicago

Hello everyone in Chicagoland,

I'll be spending 4 days in Chicago with a friend. Neither of us have visited before. I live in Minneapolis (for grad school) and she lives in Toronto (where I am from). We're meeting up to celebrate her birthday. We're staying at the Sofitel. (This is sort of our thing - for my birthday we met up in NYC)

I'm a big foodie, and she can be convinced to go anywhere. We definitely want to try Chicago pizza and hot dogs. Good brunch places. However, I'd also like to eat some things that are hard to get, or not very good, in Minneapolis. I'm thinking about things like ramen and sushi.

Can you all help with a list of must-eat places that aren't too expensive?

Also - I want to take her out for a nice birthday dinner. Something around $80, not including tip? We're very open in terms of food, but I'd like to be a fun, bustling atmosphere for her birthday. In New York she liked places like Balthazar.

Thanks for the help! I am so excited about this trip!

What does everyone munch with their coffee?

For the ultimate indulgence, a cheese danish!

5 days in N.O.

Amazing! Keep these great tips coming!

What about a good place to try a sazerac?

5 days in N.O.

I will be staying in New Orleans for five days, at the Hotel Monteleone. I've never been to the city before and I'll be with a group of people who are in the same boat, and most of them are foodies. We're all graduate students, so we can't go to high end places but I'm open to anything reasonable, or especially worth it.

Can you recommend places to eat that are not too too far away from the hotel? If something is a must-eat, I will go out of my way to try it, but it would be cool to be able to walk around. High on my list are po'boys, soft shell crab, and oysters. And anything else you tell me I need to eat!

One other request: can you recommend a nice cafe to sit and read at? I will probably spend one afternoon doing this for a few hours.

thanks.

Do you have a favorite I'm-alone-now-so-nobody-will-know favorite dish?

Kraft dinner.

Restaurants You Love - And Nobody Talks About

I have to say that Butter Bakery and Cafe on Grand Ave. has pretty awesome breakfast/brunch. The migas are amazing!!! And their turkey sandwiches are made with real roast turkey, all made in house.

Restaurants everyone loves--except you

Well, I moved here from a very big city with great food and so far most of the places I've been to have been sort of horrible:
Azia
Bad Waitress
Shuang Cheng (basically anything in dinkytown)
Jasmine 26
Hell's Kitchen
French Meadow
Common Roots (that place is disgusting for anything other than coffee.)
Hard Times (how can people eat the food there? seriously.)
Victor's (seriously overrated. the only thing they do really well is the cortadito.)

The places I DO like:
Quang
Alma
Grand Cafe
Caspian Bistro

I'm looking forward to trying more places in St. Paul. I keep hearing about the great food there.
