Pizza Lover's Profile
Mideastro location in Yorkville
I was at a function catered by them last week - food was really good, especially the small lamb burgers which were juicy and perfectly cooked. Very impressive quality of food.
2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS
I'm surprised they lasted this long- the place is too big and was always empty.
The sad state of falafel in Toronto
I would add a new contender to the list of good falafels in Toronto. It is located in the Tim Horton's plaza at Bathurst and Finch and shares space with the pizza store. Freshly made light falafels, a variety of fresh and tasty salads, a top notch zchug and the friendliest guy working behind the counter. The price is a steal at $3 and they make a very good shawarma as well.
Best burgers
Don't know the answer to your question - but when I attended York back in the 90's Blueberry Hill burgers were top notch. I think you inspired me to go back to school and taste those burgers again.
Pink Burger. Huh??
Pink Burger is at Wellington and Bayview - not Bathurst and you've got to see it to believe it!
Flavours of Israel website
I came across a fairly new website called www.flavorsofisrael.com - it's one of the best sites that I have seen regarding the Israeli food scene, interesting places to visit and links to Israeli bloggers (whom I'm sure will be able to answer many of our questions!).
Advice re Bagel World bagels
The flat bagels go stale very quickly. I put them in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds then cut to the appropriate size and toast.
I once bought the day old flat bagels and they did not fair as well as the fresh bagels using the microwave & toast method.
Duffernin Grove Market Dinners
Took the nephews for the pizza making a few weeks ago - don't go expecting too much. Small piece of dough, Ragu type sauce, flavorless cheese and as the growing season was still young there were no toppings for the pizza.
Although it's a wood burning oven you can't tell from the way they bake the pizza - the volunteers who man the oven are inexperienced. I also recommend keeping an eye on your pizza and who handles it.
Recs: Bahn mi across the city.
Disclaimer - I've been to this place twice and was impressed with what I got - especially the crispy baguette. Maybe I was lucky. However I never buy pre-made sandwiches - I always ask for a slight variation and if they don't put enough, I ask for more.
Recs: Bahn mi across the city.
BA LE 2 on the north side of Dundas just west of Spadina must be on your tour. Their tofu extra spicy is my favorite and their baguette is outstanding.
New Cooking Channel Reactions??
Let's also remember that the in studio cooking show format has been done to death. Really how many times can you watch someone make pasta?
The differentiation is the personalities that host the shows and even that has become very uninspiring. The Food Network is a business first of all and they had to introduce new shows in order to get a larger audience. The Cooking Channel will be no different.
New Cooking Channel Reactions??
The Cooking Channel business model is all about cheap programming - take the shows that are collecting dust off the shelf, bring some overseas shows and call it a day.
The novelty of watching repeats will also wear off and the Cooking Channel will morph into the Food Network2.
Toronto Pizza Chains
I can't believe that I'm posting this but the key to a good Pizza Pizza pizza is thin crust, well done, extra sauce and eaten within minutes of it coming from the oven.
My favorite new chain pizza is Pizzaiolo - great crust. Their slices are super generous and the spinotta (spinach, ricotta and fresh tomato) is head and shoulders one of the best slices in the city (even re-heated).
Biltong
Nortown Foods has these at their Promenade location at Thornhill. Check their Eglinton location west of Bathurst.
TV's "Bitchinest" Chef Shows?
All restaurant owners should know by now that any "Food Network Special" is the code word for Throwdown with Bobby Flay!!!!!
Restaurants I love, you hate
But at least at McD's you can break the burger apart and see real beef. At Johnny's the patty is so generic and has been over processed to death.
But Johnny's fries hit the spot for some reason and fighting off the seagulls is fun too.
Papa Sol's in Leslieville...should I be excited
Should you be excited - uhmm no.
I tried the one at the Beach - what a disappointment.
Overpriced - the smallest piece of veal (and not the greatest quality either- so maybe it's a blessing in disguise) that I've ever had in any veal sandwich and we ordered 3 portions so we had a chance to compare, super sloooooow service and it's cash only (really?! no excuse for that these days).
Looking for an Art Deco venue for a cocktail reception for around 150 people in or around Toronto.
I was recently at the Design Exchange - former Toronto stock market on Bay St. and it's a beautiful space.
New Cooking Channel Reactions??
Don't worry, Foodnetwork Canada is providing us with our fair share of cooking competitions, bake-offs and Iron Chef America.
Combine the US shows with Canadian content requirements and don't overlook the fact that all of the Canadian programming has government tax credits and we're not that far off from you guys.
Caplansky's - You have got to be kidding me!
Not to start a war but even Zane himself admits to the wide variability in his smoked meat product and service levels - so let's not be so quick to dismiss those who have had less than stellar experiences at Caplansky's and call them haters.
If all you've ever had was amazing experience, you're one of the few lucky ones.
Caplansky's is going through growing pains which are extremely public and he's got to take the good with the bad.

Caplansky's

Caplansky's - You have got to be kidding me!
Extremely nice owners (with an interesting background story) + decent thai food (for Toronto) probably account for the rave reviews.
Caplansky's - You have got to be kidding me!
Oh but you are forgetting about the bandwagon effect my friend.
New Cooking Channel Reactions??
We've had 3 seasons of French Food at Home in Canada and I call the camera work on that show ADHDtv. It can be totally distracting.
Mexico One Plate at a Time
And it's indicative of the total lack of creativity of cooking shows these days.
Lamb Skewers
Royaljelly - any particular recommendations for places up north that sell these lamb skewers? thanks.
What's up with Perl's kosher foods?
The one at the Promenade has been closed for quite awhile now - a former employee opened up her own kosher shop at that location and the feedback I've heard is that it's a high quality place.
Cooking Channel
Food Network Canada is separate from the American version - so lucky us will still get all those wonderful food network challenges and cake competitions!
FYI - in Canada Fine Living Network was rebranded into the DIY network several months ago.
Cooking Channel
As I live in Canada we won't be getting the new cooking channel but are you serious - the Cooking Channel is putting on Food Jammers? I wish I could get that 1/2 hour of my life back.
And David Rocco - he's become so full of himself - he's so hip it hurts. All the Canadian pseudo- stars are chomping at the bits to enter the US market via this channel.
