matjes herring, where?
Being of Russian and Dutch decent, I've had plenty of herring and love it. I find pickled herring disgusting and it certainly was nor is ever served in my family. I normally have matjes herring. You can get matjes herring from many of the delis on Roncesvalles. It pretty good, but make sure you soak it in milk for a while, preferably overnight. You can get salted herring at SLM but I find it too salty even after you soak it in milk. But the best is raw herring, which I've never been able to find here. This is what is served in Amsterdam. You can, however, get raw herring frozen at the Frankfurt airport to bring home to Toronto. This is what my uncle brings home every year for Russian easter.
anti-licious
Actually, you will see that $45 for valentines day. It's regularly $30.

Tunisian Chickpea breakfast dish
I saw that show too. I looked like they added a partially cooked egg.
Zuni Short Rib question
Make Daniel Boulud's short ribs braised in red wine. I've made Zuni, Goin, Boulud, and many others and Boulud's is by far the best. At one dinner party, I caught a couple of guests in the kitchen scraping out the last drops of sauce out of the pot. They snuck in there after we had the cheese course and dessert.
where is the best fish and chips in Toronto/GTA??
I tried Regent Park Fish and Chips a couple weeks ago and was thoroughly impressed.
Kitchen Aid
I'm currently making a batch of Cheddar-Chive Gougères. Making the pâte á choux is much easier with a Kitchen Aid. After you cook the dough, let it cool in the Kitchen Aid bowl and use the mixer to beat in the eggs and other ingredients.
The first batch is done and oh my god are they addictive. I've already eaten a bunch waiting the second batch.

Restaurant Supply Toronto
Prices? I've always found Dinetz to be complete ripoff. Nella has far better prices.
for the love of basketball and good food
Betty's.
You won't get sound, but they got new TVs last year. They'll put the Raptors on at least one TV if the Leafs are playing, but you may have to ask.
Good wings, good burgers, good pizza.
Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto
The best butter tarts are in Bruce County, specifically Liddle's in Riply.
very disappointing meal at Czehoski (long-ish)
I don't want to suggest that don't have many reasons to be disappointed about the dining experience, but your questioning of the addition of cilantro to the sour cream sauce is not one. My Russian grandmother frequently served a sour cream sauce with cilantro. It's actually quite traditional.
where to buy demi glace downtown?
I bought some form Whitehouse yesterday, and that was my feeling as well, too much tomato.
All About Braising: Poultry and Game Recipe Reviews
I made this last week and the meat was falling off the bone after the suggested 35 mins. I as well used a 4.5 quart Le Creuset. I'm curious about whether you used parchment paper. I did, and this is something I haven't done with braises in the past, but I definitely will from now on.
Puff Pastry
I've tried the Loblaw's puff pastry from the Queen's Quay Market and it was actually pretty good.
Anyone Make Marcella's Meat Broth?
I had made risotto many times with quality store bought broth/stock as well homemade stock. Then I made it with Marcella's homemade broth. I will never go back.

Recipe: Chicken Cacciatore new version.
I've owned this cookbook for many years, it was probably the first book that transformed me from the one who cooks dinner in the family to one who thinks about what to cook for most of the day. Anywho, up until now I have had wonderful results with every recipe I've tried, and I've tried almost all of them. But tonight I tried a new one. I've made the chicken cacciatore many , many times before and it is fantastic, but tonight I tried the new version for the first time. When I read the recipe first, I was worried that the onions would get too dark before the chicken could crisp up, if at all. And this is exactly what happened.
naan at king palace
Whenever I cook indian at home, I pick up some naan at King Palace It's usually very good, but last night it was crap. I don't even think they they made it, it looked store bought. Has anyone had the same experience lately? It was the first time I had the naan in a while, I'm hoping this was an off night.
One or several things made really good that you want to spread the word about?
Weezie's. I love their tartare. I frequently have it for lunch since they're around the corner from my work/office. Their burger and fries kick ass too. Actually, I've been very pleased with everything they have. It's never really been that busy, but that may change since they were favourably reviewed in NOW this week.
BOLOGNESE sauce recipe? like the ones at La Scala
Marcella says milk first, then wine. She says the milk "protects" the meat from the wine. I'm not sure what she means by this though.
Weezie's @ King & Power
I posted a while back inquiring about this place and have since been there for both lunch and dinner. For lunch I had the tartare which was fabulous. Seriously, one of the best I've had, hand chopped tenderloin and seasoned exactly to my liking. I took my sfo for dinner last week. I had the fish cakes and then the tilapia. Both were excellent, the fish cakes were succulent on the inside, crispy on the outside. The tilapia came with roasted galic sauce with chorizo essence, a very flavourful sauce (which is needed with this fish). SFO had the arugula salad, which she raved about, and then the macaroni gratin, which she also said was very good. Wines are reasonably priced, we had a bottle of Les Jamelles Merlot($29).
Overall, a very enjoyable dining experience, and as others have mentioned, a much needed addition to the neighbourhood. Dinner with tax and good tip came to $100.
