Moving to Medford . . . What are the local haunts?

Meatball Sub from Nappi Meats is a must.

Ravs from Bella Ravioli. Their sauce and meatballs are great too.

Chicken Parm or chicken cutlet sub from Victors Deli in Somerville - favorite cutlets in areas...

Italian sausages and grillables from Doms Sausage in Malden.

Bistro 5 used to be killer, have not been in years tho.

Bread and Almond Croissants from Mamadou’s Artisan Bakery in Winchester.

Gene Chinese Flatbread in Chelmsford to close soon...

Gene sadly closes his Chelmsford location this week (Saturday is the last day I believe)! GO now, or drive to Woburn for your fix. Wait! I will be doing that anyways...

Not in the actual Hong Kong Grey - in the strip mall near the Hong Kong (across from the PO in Chelmsford). The Hong Kong is a monstrosity - its an old fashioned stand alone building at the end of the strip mall- he just needs a small storefront. The smallish unit he is looking at is near Jimmy's Pizza and it needs a lot of work on it in order to be rented to a restaurant owner, so they are not sure it will happen.

Funny Grey, I used to work in Woburn and we used to hit Marco's Italian cold cuts 4x a week. We loved his food there. I modeled my meatballs after his recipe - he shared it once. You ever been in there?

I have been asking for no garlic for awhile now. I like garlic, but not a big pile of raw garlic. I find the oil has some garlic in it, enough for me!

Insulted? Nah, a sale is a sale!

People have tried to help him, including ME! A call for help was also posted on the Chelmsford patch - that got nowhere.

Great idea tho, if anyone knows of a place, let Gene or his wife know!

At least Woburn is within striking distance. It will just make it that much more special!

Gene Chinese Flatbread in Chelmsford to close soon...

Want to let people know that the town of Chelmsford is seizing the land that Gene's resides on, and is turning the area into an affordable housing community.

Gene is slated to close sometime around May, but the exact date is still unclear.

He thinks they will relocate to Woburn, but he had little details to share on that venture. Ideally he would like to stay in Chelmsford, as he considers it his home and he has a big base of customers here already. However, there is little to nothing in the way of commercial space for him to move into.

For those interested in getting their fill before he moves, go sooner rather than later!

He still has the Boston location too, but I will be very sad the day he is forced to shut his doors here in Chelmsford.

Been there twice, it sure is open. Check out their Facebook page to see for yourself. That is the only way to communicate with them now too.

I'm pretty sure it can only be sold at the orchards themselves. So, you won't find around Boston and I don't think you can really find it inside of 128. My favorite is from Phils apples in Harvard Massachusetts. A new family took the business over this year from Phil, however they are keeping everything the same and still producing his state champion cider. It tastes exactly the same to me.

Ensaïmadas?

OC - Rowena makes many varieties of them fresh in large batches to sell at local Asian Markets and at her small storefront. Maybe she will chime in here, if not you can feel free to email her at keykgirl@keykgirl.com

Take out for me stick together some, more so the longer they are sealed. I always give them a good toss in a larger bowl before I eat em to evenly distribute the love. they separate some then.

Gene's Chinese Flatbread Coming to Boston

Been addicted to his noodles since day one. Nothing else like them around here. Love the fact that he finally got a noodle dish with Lamb & veggies in it too. Never had his soup, hate soups for the most part.

As for some of the dissenter's issues. I am not here to change your mind, I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion and tastes. However, the kitchen Gene works with is the size of a shoe box in case you have not noticed. One of the main issues he has is the small amount of the refrigerator space. He tried to rent space from the consignment shop next door to put in a double door fridge, but they did not want to give up the space. In order to be able to fit his last noodle masterpiece onto the menu, he needed to get rid of most of the Americanized Chinese dishes he served.

I am sure he is able to expand his menu and I sure hope he does in the future, but I am very happy just having a cuisine like this within striking distance.

I sure hope not Grey, but you never know. His wife is stopping her full time gig for this expansion, so I am sure they are hoping both are highly profitable. They plan to split the duty at each of the locations. He is confident that his current chef in Chelmsford can handle it too. Let think positive and hope there is enough business for both the locations to thrive.

Gene's Chinese Flatbread Coming to Boston

Just had a tried Gene's new dish that I had been hoping he would add to his menu for a long time now. It was cumin lamb cut very thinly and stir fried with sweet onion and bell peppers served over his infamous hand pulled noodles with a little chili oil, topped with sprouts and cilantro. The flavor of the lamb really comes thru well in this dish as it's juices become one with the chili oil forming a flavorful sauce for the noodles to slosh in. Best dish he has put on his menu to date IMO.

I was the only person eating so he came out and chatted like he always does. He told me he is opening a new restaurant on Bedford St in downtown crossing. He explained that it is about halfway between Chinatown and Downtown crossing so he should be able to pull both crowds. He plans to open sometime early July as the space is ready and all permitted, just waiting for some paperwork to be finalized. At first, he is going to do lunch only. He is going to split the time with his wife running the restaurant while running the Chelmsford location at the same time. He wants to feed people in Boston and he is very excited about this new venture. He is also happy the Bostonian's will not have to drive out to Chelmsford to get his food as they are a large part of his clientele.

Boston, you should be very excited about this, I know I would be. This man knows his craft and really truly cares about his food and what people think about the food. I will venture to say that this place is going to become a favorite of many soon and a HUGE success. Go Gene Go, and keep smiling!

Nice he finally got this up on the menu. Been trying to talk him into adding it for a year and a half now since he served it to us on the Chowdown. I believe the lamb is just done in the wok quickly before being tossed with the noodle. Cannot wait to try it.

New sign on building today...

Just drove by. Walked up to the windows and they have much more paper on them so you can't really see in. There was an expired building permit that expired about two weeks ago in the window on display. There was also a newish looking black sign That was large and prominently displayed headlining the building signs that were already existing with view from the street. That looked new to me because the only thing I remember was a canvas sign tied with ropes to the bushes.

Would love to see this place open!

Market Basket crispy chocolate chip cookies

Tried them once and I feel they are a far cry from the Tates Bake Shop version that they seem to be trying to imitate. You can easily find Tates cookies in Whole Foods or try Trader Joes High Brow cooies sometime (which are purportedly made by Tates and branded by TJ's). Better quality butter and chocolate IMO...

What style of Eggplant Parm do you like and from where?

If anyone wants a great Eggplant dish in the Chelmsford area, you have to try the Eggplant Napoleon at the Glenview Pub. Uniformly paper thin slices of eggplant, egg wash and flour, sautéed then stacked about 2" high covered and baked with sauce and motz. They serve it as an app, or a dinner. Both are hearty portions and mouthwateringly delicious! Not too greasy or salty either.

Great bakery but I have never had a cake there. They have one of the best Cubano sandwiches I ever had. Few blurbs online about it if you google it. Give them a ring.

I ask him everytime I go in there if he has anything new. He always smiles and says no, much to my chagrin. Hoping that you read the "soup" part of this dish wrong and it is actually a stir fry lamb with the handpulled noodle dish he made for our chowdown! Been on him to add this to the menu for a year now. Will report back soon.

Sushi Yanagi at Drum Hill

Been there once a month or so ago. It was decent and I will go back. Loaded myself up with some fresh toro and Salmon (belly cut). I was treated like royalty, but I was also the only one in there around 1pm on a weekday. Not sure of the sushi chef's name, but he was very nice and caring too. Brought me a delicious sushi amuse-bouche right after I ordered.
