Burdick Chocolates: Only Hedge Fund Managers Need Apply

I buy Burdick chocolates for some holidays and special occasions, but I probably wouldn't if my parents didn't actually pay for the chocolates as a gift for me. Still, I think that they are well worth the price. At least 99% of the chocolates in the variety box are. They had one spicy white chocolate piece that tasted like cheap crap. I'm not sure if they still make that piece. I hope not. Look at it this way, would you rather have $60 worth of cheap chocolate, or wonderful, high quality expensive chocolate?

Need dessert recipe for tonight, please help

I don't see why not, it sounds like that would be tasty, and attractive. Adding a bit of liquer would add a nice touch as well.

Maybe something like this? Everybody loves cookies. :D Sure it's not fancy, but who cares? Cookies are awesome.

What cookbooks have you bought lately, or are you lusting after? July, 2013 edition (through July 31, 2013)

Thanks to you both, beetlebug and Gio. I appreciate the link to the COTM thread, I'll def. check it out. Cajun meatloaf sounds a little bit weird I'll admit, but awesome. I'll add it to the list, thanks. :)

I haven't either. It's hard to justify making a full-sized cake when you're single and live alone. Having that much cake lying around could be dangerous. ;) Plus I do not have any cake pans, or a hand mixer. I need to do some shopping.

Foods You Like Primarily Because of the Texture

Nothing that I will actually eat. I love the texture of tuna sushi, but I have only eaten it once because I really dislike the taste.

For those of you with dogs

I love dogs, and I would never expect one of my friends to put their dogs outside. That seems ridiculous for her to expect that, unless she is actually frightened of large dogs. In which case I would suggest that you guys dine at a restaurant instead. I do not think it is appropriate for a guest to dictate terms like that, although it is a slightly different situation IMO since she is your good work friend. She probably feels comfortable enough with you to ask.

Yeah, sorry for that mental image. I'm freaked out, but a little curious too. I'll check it out, thanks for the link. :)

I had to read that title several times, just to be sure that I read it correctly. Was it written by Ron Jeremy? :D

No sorry, I just looked in the index. I did look up a Hummingbird cake recipe online that looks good, in case you didn't have or didn't want to purchase the Jean Anderson book. It got five stars. I don't know if it's anything like the cake you had, but I hope it helps. :)

I'm not surprised that the sweet items are good. I'm not knocking most of the savory dishes, just the ones that you mentioned. Slottsstek sounds like a good savory dish, I'll have to add it to my recipes list. I'll have to add the sweet items as well, I have a massive sweet tooth. :D

No problemo. I joined the thread because I value other people's opinions. Yours are no less valuable just because we disagree on a topic. :)

Which persona, 'the abused wife', or the 'her cooking shows could double as soft core porn' persona? I imagine it's the first one. I respectfully disagree in either case.

I think that one of the cookbooks that I picked up recently is probably pretty obscure. It's 'The Southern Heritage Cakes Cookbook.' It has some pretty good looking recipes, and it had more positive reviews on Amazon than I expected, 12-5 star reviews, and 1-4 star review. I picked it out of the free bin at 2nd and Charles.

There are a couple of cakes that I am going to make eventually, it should be an interesting experiment. I want to make the Williamsburg orange cake, the Mayflower grape cake, the blackberry cake, the Hootenholler whisky cake, buche de Noel, the Mount Vernon cake, and the lemon gold cake.

The book does not have enough pictures of the cakes for my taste, however. The book has some old photographs that are interesting IMO, but the book has too many photographs of really ugly artwork.

Well it is the 'I Hate to Cook Book.' Why make the soup from scratch when you can use canned soup instead? ;)

What new food(s) have you tried recently and how was it?

I can't think of one at the moment. I just wanted to hijack the thread, and insist that the OP needs to try the Ritter Sport Weisse Cocos bar, if you like white chocolate. It's the best bar that they make, hands down IMO.

Thanks for the responses guys, I need all the help I can get. :D I'm making a list of recipes that I want to make from some of the cookbooks that I have purchased. I'll be sure to add shrimp stock, CSGwASS, and dirty rice to the list. I have never made Cajun food before, so I want to start with his recipes before I attempt to make dishes from other Cajun cookbooks. I'll make a note about adjusting the cream/butter as well.

That was just the first of many things that stuck out in my mind. You also said absorbed by their own hype, so I decided to run with it. And like Harters said, her pouting/moaning turned her into a caricature.

'Lots of talk throughout about pleasing the menfolk.' Must not make joke, must not make joke. I was going to ask if you had tried any of the recipes, but then I actually read the next paragraph. Those recipes frighten me.

Yeah, no offense intended to your wife's wonderful heritage, but that sounds like something frat boys would make the pledges eat in order to join the fraternity.

I'm amazed that you have not heard about her troubles with her husband Charles Saatchi. Having your husband put his hand around your throat is not very good for your 'Domestic Goddess' image.

The worst cookbook that I own is probably Favorite Recipes from our Best Cooks by: Raleigh Avenue Baptist Church. All of the recipes in it look disgusting. Why do I keep it? I have not looked at all of the recipes yet, and it has a useful equivalents guide plus a couple of other useful pages. I got it for free from the 2nd and Charles freebie bin. I'll get rid of it when I have a lot more cookbooks.

The most useless recipe in a cookbook that I own by far, is from Essential Pepin. It tells you how to make a ham sandwich on page 144. I knew that it was a beginner's cookbook, but I never thought that I would find a recipe that tells you how to construct a sandwich in a book that is written for adults.

I do train my animals, but they also think everything is interesting. I'm also one of those ultra-paranoid cat 'Mothers' who worries about every little thing when it comes to their animals health and welfare. As soon as I find a good magnetic strip I'll buy it, but that won't stop me from worrying. :p

Thanks for the reply, that is a huge help. Paul Prudhomme was not really on my want to buy list, more like my will buy list. I have always wanted to try some of his recipes, I think I saw him on TV when I was a kid. He had a lot of personality if I remember correctly.
