Bakeries in Calgary?

Manuel Latruwe re-opened mid February, so you should be able to get you pastry fix! Also, Aviv has another outlet in. Kensington, operating out of the Sunnyside natural market (opposite Safeway), not that that helps you being in the deep southeast....I also second Yann's for their sourdough baguette and almond croissants, as well as Ace products as reliable stand bys

South Maui Recs

Thanks for the tips and suggestions everyone! Looking forward to checking out the Kihei and Wailea picks. Had forgotten about foodland poke, so that's back on the list....and we are big fans of star noodle and plantation house, just don't think we'll be making the trek this trip. We'd really like to explore Wailea/Kihei as much as possible.

South Maui Recs

We are Maui regulars who typically stay in Kaanapali but are staying in Wailea for the first time. Given that this is outside of our food comfort zone, we would really appreciate some suggestions. We will have a well behaved and food adventurous 2 year old in tow, so early dinner ideas are also welcome. Also, is there any really great place to get super fresh fish (to cook at home)? In Honokowai there is this really awesome fish market which is typically our go to for fish to cook ourselves...any equivalent in Kihei or Wailea?

thanks a bunch for any ideas!!

Best Calgary bakeries recommendations please.

Oddly enough, the one place that comes to mind that fits your description is Loaf Bakery & Cafe in Fernie, BC. Great little place, good variety of bread and excellent use of small space. In Calgary, I totally agree with the Sidewalk Citizen rec.

Contemporary dim sum in YYC

Wondering if anyone can help with this...

Is there anywhere in Calgary that serves dim sum along the lines of Lai Wah Heen or Crown Princess in Toronto? Basically, I am looking for a modern take on the typical dim sum fare.

Thanks!!

Restaurant Review - Teatro

Not at all do I think someone should be grateful with a groupon. It just seemed a bit unfair to the restaurant to say you are disappointed and won't go back when it's clear you seemed to have no problem with the food or service. Having the chairs be the biggest issue seems a bit much....I've never noticed a problem with their chairs.

Restaurant Review - Teatro

Seriously?! Your "slightly disappointing" take away and general problem with Teatro lies not with the food, or service, but with the CHAIRS? Oh, and the "atmosphere" which wasn't to your liking. And all this with a Groupon. Well...

Toronto great, not just good, food recs - HELP!

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I am staying in the Yorkville area and am willing to explore a bit for good food, though ideally I would like to focus on downtown. Re: money, I don't have upper or lower limits on $ amount, as long as i get the value for money spent, so great dim sum, wow-worthy bistro fare, amazing sushi, a delicious roti....all of these and more are what I am looking for.

Toronto great, not just good, food recs - HELP!

Hi Torontonians,

Food obsessed Calgarian here, in town for a week, and looking for suggestions for the best your city has to offer.....if it helps, I am pretty adventurous and am willing to explore the downtown area in search of great food....so bring it on! One caveat though, will be dining with an infant so child friendly, or at least tolerant, is a must!

Thanks!

Calgary Christmas Gift

My restaurant recommendations for a terrific meal would be Rouge Restaurant, Capo Restaurant or The River Cafe. You can puchase gift certificates from all three, I think, or alternately, if you have a look at their menus and you know your friends well enough, you may even be able to pre-select and work with the restaurant. Or, you could do a tasting menu. I have also heard terrific things about the tasting menu at The Chef's Table at Kensington Inn. All of these have websites that you can have a look at. As far as dinner and dancing, I have no ideas, BUT if your friends are likely to enjoy cooking classes with a delicious meal after, The Cookbook Company has terrific classes throughout the year featuring sone of Calgary's best cooks and chefs. Their website is www.cookbookcooks.com

Hope this helps

Where to eat dinner on December 25th in Calgary?

If your friends need Fernie food suggestions and if you aren't too familiar with the town, let me know and I'll be happy to recommend some of my faves. Not too sure if this can be done within this thread, but I am happy to help.

Looking for kid friendly restaurants in YYC, help!

I would definitely recommend The Ranche, for brunch at least, with kids. We've been therre with a baby and a toddler, no problems. Plus there were a few other families with kids there as well. Even if you can't make it for a steak dinner, I think it's a must for out of town guests.

We've also done sushi a few times at Sushi Bar Zipang with kids, but pre-7 pm dinner rush.

Finally, our go to place is dim sum at Forbidden City. Lots of people, quite often families with kids, and the general cacophony of the place can drown out the general noise that usually accompanies children.

You can also possibly try The Cactus Club, as per ugonnaeatthat.com

Hope this helps

Best quality sushi in Calgary- Blowfish, Globefish, Sukiyaki House or somewhere else?

Sushi Bar Zipang in Bridgeland never fails to impress. Excellent cuts of fish, very fresh, fantastic service.
For something further south, Sushi Ginza in Willow Park Village is pretty good. (Still, if it were me, I would drive the extra miles for Zipang). :)

Anyone out there know where I can get my hands on Martin Miller's gin? Preferably somewhere in Calgary.

Calgary - Rouge or Capo

I know I may be going against the crowd here, but I would heartily recommend Rouge over Capo. Although it could very well be that we caught Capo on a bad night, I have to say that I found the food to be ranging from unexceptional to poor. Very unfortunate because I would have loved to love it. Recently went to Rouge for a birthday dinner and I was quite impressed- very very good food, great service, my new favourite.

Choklat - Inglewood, Calgary

Hey Chowhounders,

I was wondering if anyone out there had been to any of the choklat events (wine pairing and chocolate making) and if you have any feedback for me. I've been to the store, love the chocolates and am toying with the idea of sending friends to the chocolate/wine events as gifts.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks!

Road Trip - Calgary To Kelowna

Hi Chowhounders,

Am driving to the Okanagan over the long weekend, and am NOT looking forward to being away from good food for the duration of the journey.

Any suggestions for tasty eats that can be found along the way? We are definitely going to be seeing dinnertime on the road.

Thanks

Team Building Exercise (food related) in Calgary

Hi Chowhounds

I need help in thinking of a fun and food-related team building activity to do in and around Calgary. I am thinking something that involves cooking and or eating/drinking. I know that theCookbook Company does some really nice classes, and I am looking into that as well, but I am also interested in any other ideas or options you may know about, including wine classes. Also, do you know if the Callebaut store does anything along these lines?

Thansk sooo much for your help.

Suggestions for meeting-type food - Calgary

Hi Calgary foodies,

I desperately need help with finding ideas for food to order in for a week's worth of roundtable-type meetings. I always seem to find myself going with Spolumbo's, but quite frankly I am eager of a change and very open to suggestions. Any thoughts?
