You don't like that?!
I can eat eggs sometimes, but not if I have to smell them cooking. Bleh.
You don't like that?!
Pound cake is ok if it's used as to sandwich something yummy, say rich chocolate buttercream, or fresh strawberries & whipped cream. On its own it's a useless item.....
"Don't Open That Bag!!!".....because I'll eat the whole thing.
LOLOL! Too funny. I'm sure you weren't the first "customers" to go crazy on samples. I'm glad you did actually buy something as well!
"Don't Open That Bag!!!".....because I'll eat the whole thing.
I've eaten a whole can of black olives on occasion. There, I said it. :-)
Gardiner, NY?
What kind of food is Oscar's serving these days? That place has been through so many changes over the past 10 years....
Gardiner, NY?
Skip Aroma Thyme - overpriced although the food is tasty. Mt Brauhaus is great if you want a big german dinner. And their breads (from Cohens Bakery in Ellenville) are terrific. Light meals - Mt. Bistro across the street from Brauhaus or as Bob Gaj says above the Village Market right down the road in Gardiner. The new owners (maybe 6 weeks ago?) are great and inventive - their sandwiches & light stuff are imaginative. I was drooling the other day when Karen described their new chicken waldorf salad sandiwich with gruyere.... And of course in New Paltz there are a bunch of decent places on the main drag. And lots & lots of places for drinking with your buddies.
A Slight Rant: Silly Pizza Rules
I don't think I've ever been to a pizza place that didn't make 1/2 & 1/2. However, my favorite place chooses to charge me for two full toppings instead of 1/2 of 1 and 1/2 of the other (for instance 1/2 pepperoni 1/2 mushroom). I pay it cheerfully, since their pizza is really good. I always feel slightly ripped off though, since other places charge 1/2 of each topping.
Stupid easy recipes you really love
The world's simplest dessert - grapes or berries dipped in sour cream mixed with brown sugar. Absolutely delicious and absolutely no effort or time expended.
And for a main - needs prep time but so easy!!! combine veg. oil, lemon juice, dried parsley and smashed garlic. Use to marinate a london broil for at least 4 hours. Toss the london broil in a really hot hot cast iron pan to carmelize, then lower heat just to get the inside hot (I love mine almost raw inside). So easy but so good. And you can use the cheapest cut of london broil since the marinade tenderizes it beautifully.
Pork roast virgin
Joining in a week late, but I read this thread Friday, and made the most fabulous pork loin yesterday. I am SO happy I read this first - I brined it in apple juice & salt for 24 hours. Dried it well, the applied a simple rub of garlic, sea salt, freshly ground black pepper, and lots of rosemary. Set the oven at 450 for 15 minutes, reduced to 375 for about an hour (maybe 50 minutes). It was the best pork I've had in years. It could have been crustier (maybe leave it at 450 for longer to start?) but it was SO juicy and moist and downright delicious. Thanks for the tips! I'd never thought of brining pork, but oh man, what a difference it made. I have such a horror of dried out tasteless pork - flashbacks to childhood, shudder.
Regional favorite that you just didn't get once you finally had a chance to try it
I am amazed by your knowing that. By *anyone* knowing that. Just... amazed. (the palindrome part, of course. Eating something made with lye is just bizarre).
Regional favorite that you just didn't get once you finally had a chance to try it
I just had a flashback to grammar school. There was something called "beef crumble" served weekly over whipped fake potatoes. The beef was loose and definitely wet - I'm betting they were serving us bastardized Maid-Rite's under another name. :-)
What's the difference between Braunschweiger and Liverwurst?
You are the very first person I've ever known who admitted to loving braunschweiger wtih mayonnaise. Thank you. I'm stepping out of the closet now. I'll take your sandwich minus the egg but adding some red onion. With mayo please!
Appetizer with "Wow Factor" to bring to a Friend's House
"Bananas & nutella stuffed wonton wrappers or banana wontons with nutella dip"
You are so evil. This sounds amazing!
Am I the only one with this absurd pet peeve about bagels and cream cheese?
Cheddar? That does seem.... bizarre. I love cheese in all its many forms of goodness, but cheddar + bagel = odd.
Jfood Onion Soup Recipe
Your soup recipe is almost a duplicate of my favorite, but I omit the garlic. I just don't like garlic, lol. But I have to admit to serving up a budget version - toasted french bread topped with shredded swiss cheese. It's not the best, but it suits me when my budget doesn't allow for gruyere!
Most unhealthy thing you have seen or eaten
"I saw one gentleman in a pub really striving for that infinite ratio by adding some mayonnaise"
Thank you for the laugh.
Most unhealthy thing you have seen or eaten
OMG, that sounds truly divine. Evil yet divine.
Greatest Hushpuppies
Would that be the same as a corn fritter? I live in upstate NY and we don't have hush puppies here. Although as a kid I remember having some at the Friday night fish fries common in Western NY.
What's the strangest meal you've had recently?
"half piece of toast with Nutella (damn that Nutella thread!!) sprinkled with fleur de sel."
I just KNEW I shouldn't open this thread. Now I'm so craving Nutella. With or without fleur de sel, but that sounds really, really good.
Am I the only one with this absurd pet peeve about bagels and cream cheese?
Exactly.
Am I the only one with this absurd pet peeve about bagels and cream cheese?
You are brilliant - I've got a few loaves of zucchini bread sitting in the bakery downstairs from my office. I never thought of putting cream cheese on a slice or two- why in the world have I not been enjoying this for years? Off to make a really good snack now - good thing I skipped lunch. :-)
Am I the only one with this absurd pet peeve about bagels and cream cheese?
I have had countless customers (who should know better) request blueberry bagels. No no no no no. I've also had requests for asiago cheese bagels. Again the answer is no no no no no. Some things are just against nature. We are a Jewish bakery. NO BLUEBERRY BAGELS ALLOWED.
Although I do occasionally enjoy a cinnamon-raisin bagel with a ton of cream cheese. Toasted is even better. Guilty pleasures....
Am I the only one with this absurd pet peeve about bagels and cream cheese?
I still love cream cheese & jelly sandwiches! Mmmmmmmm......
Am I the only one with this absurd pet peeve about bagels and cream cheese?
I haven't seen that delicious date nut bread (in a can) in years. I'll have to do some searching online - now I'm really craving some. With cream cheese, of course. Yum!
Steaks ... Do you eat the fat?
Oooh, you made me gag. Chicken fat is disgusting. But fat on a steak? Bring it on, all of it. And I'll take, without shame, any that you're not going to eat. And fat on pork chops is the best part! But chicken... shudder. That goes to the cats & dogs!
What have you given up trying to cook?
Me too! I don't even marinate any more. Sprinkle with dry seasonings and use the cast iron griddle pan (the side with the ridges). OMG, they are so good this way! My current love is with Montreal steak seasoning in abundance. They come out really good, and stay tender and moist.
The End of the World as We Know it
Yes, please keep us informed with your new lifestyle! I love to use up things that others would throw away. I'm frugal (ok, cheap) and I love hearing stories of the way others survive without constant shopping. Maybe a blog, if you have time? Anyway, best of luck with this! And I do hope you can find another job that suits you in the near future.
