curtis building deli philadephia
I've recently started working there, too. Which deli are you referring to? I get lunch from The Cooperage takeout side a lot, which is quite good, but isn't really a deli...
Also noticed this link under under "Related Discussions" up on the right, which has a lot of great suggestions--the thread's a couple of years old, but most of the places are still around. I've tried some of them already and plan to try others, especially the Chinese lunch truck.

any quiz nights downtown center city wed may 23-mon may 28th?Best happy hours for food?
National Mechanics has a fun Quizzo on Wednesday nights, and good, fairly inexpensive food, too. It's in Old City, though; east of Center City (or on the east end of Center City, depending on who you ask).
what are the best happy hour food specials in downtown area?
Aha, so you're the other old head I see there at happy hour! ;-)

There's also The Cooperage--they have a $5 menu with several sandwiches and apps. Fridays get pretty busy, but you can usually get a seat at the bar, unless an entire office is in there having happy hour.
Restaurant with a great bar menu and a Television?
There are several good, non-chaotic places in Old City to watch a game and get some tasty food and drink at the bar:
Khyber Pass Pub
Bierstube
Revolution House
Triumph Brewing Company (better for day games, they have live music most nights)
Mac's Tavern
Philadelphia Bar & Restaurant

I like Sampan, too; but I try to go earlier in the week, as it does get very crowded on Thursdays and Fridays. Two people can leave pretty stuffed for about $50 or so (including plenty of drinks).
Fishtown / Northern Liberties Restaurants
The Abbaye and North Third are good, inexpensive and close by, about 3-4 blocks away. There are a couple of other places that are nearby like Silk City and Il Cantuccio (BYOB I believe) that I've heard good things about, but have yet to try myself.
Need suggestions for venue near convention center
Field House can accommodate those numbers, but unless they let you bring in your own food...I would avoid it.
Drink before dinner at Vetri?
Valanni is a good place for a cocktail; it's about a block east of Vetri on Spruce Street.

Underground Arts might work with you. Located in the Wolf Building at 12th and Callowhill, it's a couple of blocks north of the Convention Center. It's a rough space, but interesting and artsy, and they do have a bar. They are having a food event this weekend, so I'm assuming they have a kitchen, too.

New Yorker in Philadelphia for One Night
Barbuzzo does have a liquor license...and an interesting beer and wine list. Food is excellent, too. SO and I enjoyed several items for around $90 for the two of us.
PA's crazy liquor laws -- another example!
I suppose in terms of actual alcohol consumption, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But from a safety perspective, it can get pretty dicey when servers are balancing drinks (and plates of food for that matter) across busy sidewalks. For that reason, I wish more places would pay attention to this law.

I got tired of all the plastic bags, too. One way around it is to bring along your wine carrier...or purchase one of their reusable tote bags for a couple of bucks.
What's "wit" the "wiz" -- Cheeseteaks for a prodigal Philadelphian
I don't think Sonny's bakes their own rolls. Pretty sure they are Amoroso's.

Campo's can be pretty grisly, though. On the same block, Sonny's has very good cheesesteaks. I usually get mine with American.
But closer to Market East...my SO got a cheesesteak from Carmen's in RTM a couple of days ago, and seemed to enjoy it very much. He was supposed to leave some for me, which didn't happen.
Drop-in gathering at bar/pub/restaurant near Convention Center
Time is a cool whiskey and jazz bar/restaurant at 1315 Sansom Street--just a couple of blocks SW from the Convention Center. They have an upstairs area that you can reserve, or your group could just meet downstairs in one of the two bar/dining areas. Food is very good too, if folks choose to eat there. It is also close to all the 13th Street restaurants, if anyone wants to break off and explore.

Loud, obnoxious patrons
I was faced with a similar situation at Tria awhile back. It was a typical busy night, and all were squeezed together at the bar, enjoying the scents and flavors of their wines, beers and cheeses. A seat opened up next to me and a young woman drenched in perfume sat down...and that was the end of my pleasant meal (and probably those of other patrons nearby). I tried turning to face away from her to finish, but it didn't really help.
Gastropubs on Thursday/Friday night
If you can, try go to Khyber on Thursday, rather than Friday. Fridays have been pretty busy lately; and while you can squeeze into the bar area and wait for a table if necessary, it would just be easier on a Thursday.
Loud, obnoxious patrons
My SO is like that, too. People around us usually seem pretty entertained (he is really funny), so I don't get embarrassed. I will say something to him if his language starts to get colorful. No one has ever spoken to us about it, either; but if they did, it wouldn't be an issue...although he may crack a parting joke at their expense...
don't forget about barbuzzo
Finally got to try Barbuzzo and it was terrific. It was pretty packed on Tuesday around 6:30-7:00-ish, but we were able to grab two seats at the bar. We shared the pig popcorn, roasted beet salad with kale, calamari and octopus, and Cinghiale pizza with wild boar sausage. All dishes were well-prepared.
And the acoustics in there were interesting. Even with every seat taken up and lots of lively conversation going on throughout the space, my SO and I could still hear each other easily without shouting.
Roasted Green Chiles
I recently saw (dried) red chiles at 12th Street Cantina in Reading Terminal Market...maybe they have frozen green chile too, or know of another place to get it.
Near 12th and Sansom
The Corner is pretty good. Smokin' Betty's was great the first time I went, but not really on the second visit.
Near 12th and Sansom
Time, Vintage...Zinc Bistro, Caribou Cafe...
I haven't tried Vedge yet, but word is it's fabulous...
Need the name of a restaurant in Albuquerque
Glad to hear Pelican's is still good--haven't been there in a long time. I'll have to keep them in mind for next time we're in town, and my SO gets tired of red and green chile.
I usually have margaritas when in Albuquerque; they are always well-made wherever you go.
Need the name of a restaurant in Albuquerque
Re: penguin steakhouse...do you mean Pelican's? If so, how was it?
Sit By A Fire With Friends? Special Bar/Restaurant Happenings for Christmas?
Mad River in Old City has a fireplace too, but I suggest avoiding both--not exactly good spots for quiet get-togethers.
Where to buy meat (steak) in center city philadelphia?
I think they're known mostly for sausages, but I recently purchases some nice NY strips from Martin's in RTM. They turned out great enough that I don't feel the need to go out for steak at a steakhouse any time soon.
Does anyone go to Serrano on 2nd St if they're not going to Tin Angel afterwards?
I've never seen a show at Tin Angel, but I live close by...so I've been to Serrano five or six times or so. It's a great place to have drinks in front of the fireplace (you can do that at Sassafras too, of course). I've really enjoyed a couple of meals, but others have been average enough that the prices didn't justify them.
If they enlarged Sassafras to make it one with Serrano...it would encompass at least two other bars, two tattoo shops, a parking lot and a liquor store!
Village Whiskey burger or Royal Tavern burger?
Perhaps the super-strong Mint Juleps from the frozen drink machine? :-)
The toasted roll is the same, but the Khyber meat has a deeper smoky, charbroiled-like flavor that the RT meat does not (or didn't the last couple of times I've had it). And while I love the smoked Gouda on the RT burger, the smoked Cheddar on the Khyber burger melds better with the flavor of the meat...as does the Creole mustard.
