Trying to ID this Gulf Coast Seafood Rest

It IS good. A wonderful place to eat in New Orleans. The atmosphere is as good as the food. I've been going there since I was a little girl and I just turned 60.

Delicious and budget-conscious around CBD_also advice on Saints day-game logistics & dining

I don't eat breakfast but make an exception for Cafe Beignet. It's on my list twice this week :-) Love their beignets and my husband loves their breakfast croissants.

Had a burger across the street at Ernst Cafe a couple of weeks ago and it was really good. Not in my top 10 burgers but still very good.

So did you like the bbq shrimp? I'm leaving tomorrow and will be there until after I eat lunch on Thursday. I was there about 10 days ago too for 3 days but I was with someone else so we just ate on the fly. I tried Ernst Cafe for the first time and it was a great burger, not Isaack's of course but good all the same. Off to pack now :-)

I would call La Boulangerie and see if they have macaroons. They can't be worse than Sucre for sure. I don't buy pralines, too easy to make at home. There are lots of places that sell pralines though. One in the Riverwalk Mall on the first level and I've seen one around St. Louis Cathedral in the past. I remember someone talking about a place that has really good ones that a little outside of the Quarter if I remember correctly. Praline Connection maybe? I've never been there but maybe others know what I'm referring to.

Looks like you've done your homework and have some great choices, maybe that's why no one responded. Here's a tip, skip Cafe du Monde and try Cafe Beignet. Two locations, one on Royal, one on Bourbon. Excellent beignets and breakfast croissants.

These days I only go to the Quarter to eat and leave so I don't think I've ever tried those. We drive so we usually go to Angelo Bracato and I've been trying to go to La Boulangerie on Magazine but last December and this August they were closed both times for an extended period. I was there week before last but didn't make. Going again Sunday and will try again after eating at Casamento's on Monday. There's another bakery I've been wanting to try - Maple St Patisserie. Also, while there's not a huge pastry selection, they have some at Cafe Beignet. I love their beignets way more than Cafe Du Monde. I've gotten better ones at the location on Bourbon but both are good. My husband had some kind of breakfast sandwich croissant with egg, cheese and bacon and he said it was the best breakfast sandwich he's ever had.

As far as candy, can't say that I know of anywhere. It's not something I look for in NO. I would bet there's more than Sucre on Magazine though. I wanted to go to Sucre for years and everyone said to skip it. I finally went and was disappointed in everything I got there except the gelato. And the prices are way too high for it to be so-so.

I'm still half asleep so I know I rambled about bakeries, are you looking for something sweet or just candy in particular?

I got about half a dozen different flavors of macaroons at Sucre earlier this year and they were nothing special at all. In fact, I threw half eaten ones away. Their gelato was very good though. I think you can easily do a lot better than Sucre.

Crawfish etouffee in the French Quarter or CBD

I liked the etouffee at Galatoire's. Some rave about Bon Ton's etouffee but I didn't like it at all. In fact I am still scratching my head over what they served me. Bon Ton did have excellent crawfish tails though.

From Houston to Long Beach, CA on Interstate 10

I'm just so darn upset that I didn't try them sooner. Well, I had tried them a few times many years ago and gave up. I would have never dreamed that the baker from Irma's was making buns for Isaack's now. Lamb, those are almost the same buns as Pappy's. I think you have a choice of buns but that is the one I get there. It might be a little lighter bun at Pappy's but the taste is the same. In fact, I thought the whole thing tasted a lot like Pappy's but Pappy's has a little better quality of meat I think and more meat.

I decided to try the burger at Isaack's a few days ago since I hadn't had one in many years there. I wasn't impressed with the one before but they are awesome now. The bun is homemade and made by the same woman that owned Irma's across the street several years ago. Irma's changed hands a few times, changed names a few times and eventually she was no longer making the buns for that place so we quit going but I'm so happy to see she's back and making them for Isaack's. It's my "go to" meal in Junction now. YUM YUM!

First time in Nola for Thanksgiving Weekend

At August they have their dress code shown on their web site I believe. I called to confirm a jacket would be required at dinner, they said yes, it was REQUIRED. We were dressed up and they sat people next to us in tee shirts, warm up suits and athletic shoes. It wasn't just the clothes, they were all just overall sloppy. Go figure. August doesn't even look like a place that I would walk into dressed down.

Really good bakeries?

I'll be there in three weeks and if they are closed AGAIN I'm going to scream. I'm dying to try it.

Really good bakeries?

I agree and their prices are outrageous. I got a small gelato last time I was there and I was surprised that it was very good. But I'd still prefer Angelo Brocato's for better pastries and better prices.

As for Maurice's, we've been going there for many years. Before Katrina it was good, after they reopened on Napoleon in Metairie, it never seemed very good and the selection was always minimal. Since they reopened the original place by the mall, we've been twice and it just keeps slipping. On top of that the last time we were there the girl waiting on us was so rude. We're done with Maurice.

Where and What Did You Eat?

Today I ate lunch at Southern Komfort on Underwood in LaPorte. I've eaten there many times since they opened about 6 months ago. I like their oysters better than Monument Inn's oysters. Anyway today while waiting on my girl friend who was lost, I got a cup of gumbo. Nope, never again. I hate getting gumbo in a restaurant but I was cold and the coffee wasn't warming me up fast enough. I could immediately distinguish the problem. They threw their sausage in there raw. So it was greasy. I always brown my sausage before adding it to gumbo. I had an excellent side salad, their thousand island dressing is wonderful. I also had a club sandwich which was delicious. My friend got the same as me and it was her first time there and she loved it.

Drago's, Prices

I don't have a clue what we pay for the charbroiled oysters in Metairie. They are one of those dishes that it just doesn't matter to me, I'm going to have them as long as there is money in my pocket. The crab salad there is decent, nothing to rave about and there are a few other things on the menu that are okay but I only eat the charbroiled oysters.

Where and What Did You Eat?

Monument Inn last night with our financial advisers. It was good as always. Oysters are still a little small. It was a group so the menu was set with several choices. Those that got the Fisherman's Platter and didn't like oysters sent them my way so I had more than enough. They take us about twice a year and last night the service was wonderful. The time before it was awful.

I've heard you can't get in Sunday at all without reservations so I was planning on that. I think I will give it a try, probably in December.

I guess he's just mostly fishing for fun because on the caption of the snapper it said catch and release.

He's way out in international waters I assume, at the offshore rigs. Don't know when he caught them, they were from the freezer. I also got a package of grouper. He catches all kinds of fish out there. These snapper are very large. I actually prefer smaller flaked fish.

Closed Forgotten New Orleans restaurants and they're outstanding dishes

Uglesichs was my favorite :-( There was a hamburger joint on Veterans in Metairie called Lee's Hambugers that was awesome. It never returned after Katrina. The new place closer to the mall and across Veterans is not even close, can't even believe it would be the same people.

Domenica - I couldn't think of the name as I was responding on the other board. They are supposed to have great pizza and it's half price during happy hour.

Luke seems to be getting the same type reviews lately. Not worth it IMO. And I had a horrible experience at August. I was hoping to cash in on Domenica before the new wears off.

Casamento's is a MUST and the only time I miss it is when we are there in the summer. No reservations, crowded at meal times and parking can be a pain but oh is it worth it!! It's been there as long as I can remember. Not much has changed. It's on the corner of Napoleon and Magazine, actually on Magazine one door east of the corner I think. If you get to that corner, walking down Napoleon on the east side of the street, you can't miss it. It's not a big store front but you'll easily recognize it from the picture on their website.

La Boulangerie Bakery is about two blocks west on Magazine. I've been dying to try it but they're always closed for long periods for whatever and I've missed it every time I've tried to go. I'll call ahead next time before going.

Having some snapper today at home, baby brother gave me lots of it that he caught out at the oil rigs in the Gulf south of Louisiana. He drives the boat to and from and while waiting, he fishes. I'm not on a budget but I refuse to pay the price for some things and snapper is one of them. I can't believe what they ask for snapper in the stores and in the restaurants. I did have one piece that was well worth the $35 and that was at Ciao Bello's by the Galleria. Best snapper dish I've ever eaten! I'm pretty sure it was a special that day though. It was topped with shrimp and crab in a cream sauce.

Crab claws

My SIL had the fried crab claws at Floyd's and said they were delicious. There didn't seem to be a whole lot of them though. Then again I could eat a bucket full. She got the dirty rice and sent it back. So that makes two dirty rice lovers that didn't like their dirty rice.
