The Best Thing You Ever Ate: Houston
I agree on the crab quesadilla at El Tiempo. I recently had it at the one on Richmond too and it was just as good.
The Best Thing You Ever Ate: Houston
I don't know if it's the best thing I've ever eaten in Houston but I love the scampi grotto at Grotto on Westheimer. It's a appetizer but I order a side of angel hair pasta and make it an entree.
I had some excellent scallops last week in a salad at Carraba's on Kirby. Best scallops I've ever eaten. They were perfect!
Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?
Yes, joedon, I do. I start missing it after just days from returning home from there.
Bland Oysters... What's up?
If it were the oil spill, why is Parkway the only one in to take oysters off the menu?
Bland Oysters... What's up?
They are joedon but there is a new place just down the road and they have been awesome. I had them Sunday and they were smaller than the other times I've eaten them there but still wonderful. They were 4 times or more larger than the ones I had at Drago's at Christmas. And tasty!!!! Southern Komfort Kitchen on Underwood between Pasadena Blvd and Spencer Hwy.
We had a dinner party to go to at Monument two weeks ago and it was really pathetic. I was very disappointed.
Cafe Du Monde menu?
You could always take the beignets to one of the balconies. I love to sit out on the balconies. Sometimes you can watch the activity on a cruise ship or just watch the mighty river activities. Yes, it is just like a food court but it's tables are for their customers only. I wouldn't eat there though because they never clean them and the place is a huge mess. They're slow but I've never had to wait behind more than one or two people. The original location is slow and I've waited behind dozens of people taking half hour or more. Not worth that. The original location is always crowded when we've been or even passed by walking or in the car.
Cafe Du Monde menu?
It's on the first floor, the food court is on the 3rd floor. It's not bad, I just get my frozen coffee and keep walking until I get to the 3rd floor and go sit out on the balcony for a bit. No need to sit down at those nasty tables. It looks like they haven't been cleaned in a month. Gross.
Game meats butcher
The owner of Southern Komfort in LaPorte was telling someone the other day that they would be serving exotic game meat soon. Why don't you give them a call and maybe they can help you find a butcher. He has some beautiful exotic mounts in the place. (281) 867-9231
Cafe Du Monde menu?
Their frozen coffee is delicious. That's all I get there and I don't go to the original location, I go to the one in the Riverwalk Mall which is across the street from Harrah's and far far far less crowded.
Bland Oysters... What's up?
I just ate a dozen at a place in LaPorte (TX) yesterday that were awesome. Some of the best I've had in a couple of years.
What would Emily Post do? [moved from New Orleans]
I think people today are far far less civil than they were 30-40 years ago. I think it's because we assume they know better and give them a pass. When they are given the pass, they think their behavior is acceptable. I don't think such people should be tolerated in public. Just as the restaurants that have dozens of screaming children running all over the place, even toddlers. They are a hazard to other customers. I saw an elderly lady get tripped by one that ran in front of her, she was taken away in an ambulance. The child was too young to know better but the parents weren't. The way people behave in public today makes you wonder if they've ever been told "no" in their lives.
What would Emily Post do? [moved from New Orleans]
I applaud you. Their behavior was that of teenage boys. After confronting them I would have told management and left to find a better place. If enough people were leaving, management would have shown them the door. Management shouldn't be cowards. If they don't confront them then they are giving them permission to act like they do. Alcohol doesn't help these situations either. Your date should have seen your actions as those of a man that wanted to have a pleasant evening. I would have been highly offended by their crude remarks about women. I am a woman and if no man stepped up to them, I wouldn't have had a problem in doing so.
Bland Oysters... What's up?
That is not true. Gulf oysters have a very unique taste. I've had oysters all over the coastal US and prefer their taste over the others.
Bland Oysters... What's up?
The oysters I had in NO in December were tasteless, That's the first time I've ever experienced that. But they were the size of my little finger's nail which is tiny so I figured there wasn't much there to taste. I had some nice plump ones here near Galveston Bay a couple of weeks ago and they were delicious. The best ones I've had in a couple of years. Don't rule out Texas oysters. What happens in the Gulf usually affects Louisiana and Texas.
New Orleans in August (seeking advice)
lol - you must live on the west side of H - over here near Galveston Bay it rarely gets under 99% humidity :-)
The Friday night before Katrina, we took the streetcar from Harrah's to the Crowne Plaza because my mother was moaning and groaning about walking the few blocks again and I thought I remembered it having a/c but that was a long time ago and I wasn't sure.
New Orleans in August (seeking advice)
Well, it's almost always very hot and humid in August. We escape to the Pacific Northwest in the summer - lol. San Juan Island where the weather is always so fabulous. Most everywhere I know of has a/c. Can't remember being anywhere without it except maybe in Canada and your area a few times. But the walk can wilt you, it still does me after 60 years in this climate. I can't think of a cure for it except dress light - no long sleeves, long pants or socks and shoes (wear sandals). You can save longer walks for after dark but it's not a whole lot better.
We drive and I've only been on the streetcar a couple of times in the last decade (just for fun) and I don't remember if they have a/c or not. Standards of dress remain the same year-round as far as I know. We usually go to the more dressy places on our pre-Christmas trip and more casual places on our summer trip. But arriving in an a/c car and getting into a restaurant is good. Some places you have to park a few blocks away especially on weekends so a cab would be perfect if you are dressed up.
Check out Cafe Atchafalaya. We really liked it last visit. Have fun and don't forget to report back.
Bon Ton Cafe?
I did not like the etouffee but the fried tails were delicious. My husband loved the jambalaya but I didn't.
Crawfish
Oh my, not good news. I don't remember the outdoor seating. But I guess it matters not now.
Crawfish
I don't think they have outside seating. But you didn't mention that in your original post. It's a really good place for seafood. And in the area you mention, I can't think of any better crawfish.
Lunch after Houston Harbor Tour
Knowing the location of your tour start would help. I agree with tlegray if that point is on Clinton Drive. Or you can hop on I-10 and be at several good restaurants on Washington in just a few minutes.
Bourdain [moved from Houston]
No one said his games were cruel, they are just childish.
Bourdain [moved from Houston]
I am a "her". Actually I'm not worried in the least, I can and will stand up to dishonesty on the internet or in real life if I am aware of it. I think it's disrespectful to others' time to play games and be sneaky. He falls in with millions of others on the internet, it's very common, so be it. That still doesn't make it acceptable behavior especially for an adult. Like I've said several times before and will say one last time, I don't like game players and people that are dishonest. If you do, that's your right.
Looking for great steaks!
It's not a steak house but I had a great filet at Cafe Atchafalaya a few months back. It was worlds better than the one I had at August. It was a special that night so I'm not sure if it's something you can get off the menu or not. It was served with bacon/spinach/crawfish rice which was delicious.
I Refuse to Eat Crawfish in a Restaurant
It's a BIG salad. I will tweek it a little next time though to remove some of the sweetness. Maybe dressing on the side.
Haven't been next door. Keep thinking I'll go and I always leave the restaurant so full I cannot think about any more food. lol
The Brisket House opened today in Deer Park. It is the same one as on Woodway. Driving by at 1:30 people were parking across the street and walking over there crossing four lanes of traffic on Center Street. It's going to be awhile before we'll go but I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully half the city went today and the crowd will die down soon.

Lambsie, I meant to tell you that I had a great shrimp salad at El Tiempo about a month ago. It was the parilla salad with shrimp. It was a little sweet and a little overdressed but very tasty. I think next time I'll cut the mandarins. Their shrimp are very good and they are generous with them, as least every time we went they were. The shrimp nachos are smothered in whole shrimp.

I hear ya James. Guess everyone is out and about now that the weather is warmer.
I ate the best fried oysters today at a place called Southern Komfort in LaPorte on Underwood. YUM! They will be my new go-to place for fried oysters. I haven't been overly impressed with the new Captain Benny's. Not bad just nothing to write home about except their jalapeno boudin which is great.
There is a "Brisket House" opening very close to me in Deer Park. I wonder if it's the related to the Brisket House on the west side that people rave about? I haven't been able to find out..
Edited to add: I just saw their ad on Craig's List for servers and it says it is their second location so I'm guessing it is related to the other Brisket House across town.
Best Houston Burgers
That's the burger I always get there too and I love it. I've only been once since it reopened and it was just like the old days. Stomps, the new place that opened down 146 that claims to be like the old Tookie's did not win me over at all. It's a good burger but I'll always opt for Tookie's over Stomps.
A few weeks ago I had another burger at Pappy's on I-10. Just a regular hamburger. It was delicious. They served me frozen fries and I questioned it. You now have to request fresh cut fries but they happily brought me some and all was right with the world. Pappy's is still #1 for me. I think it's the homemade bun that puts it over the top.
Casamento's in June?
As far as I know they close down the entire three months. :-( Sorry you will miss their oysters, they're really good.
