Billy's Deli - Glendale - Is it any good?

Billy's is still good, but IMHO not as good as it used to be. I can remember a time when you faced a 20-30 minute wait if you arrived after noon.

But the last few times I've been there around lunchtime you can get seated straightaway.

Pastrami is still their strongpoint (IMHO).

Is it as good as Brent's? Langers? <insert name of fave deli>? That's a religious war I don't care to get into....

Dim Sum Cooking Classes in LA/OC?

I know that Sur La Table sometimes has Dim Sum classes, and offers one too.

Taste Chicago in Burbank?

The last time I ate at Taste Chicago, it wasn't very good.

The beef was very rubbery and the au jus (gravy, whatever) didn't
have much flavor.

They also had discontinued the frozen custard and the flourless
chocolate demi-cakes.

I kind of got the feeling maybe its new owners??? just speculating.

TESCO Fresh and Easy

I usually go to the one in Buena Park, and I think the thing I really like the most about these stores is their selection of smaller quantity items.

This is a really nice idea for the single person/small family who doesn't need to buy Costco Quantities all the time.

I also like their meats. Nice quality.

Authentic NY- or Italy-style pizza in central OC?

There's a new NYPD Pizza (yes, I know its a chain) outlet opened in Fullerton.

They've got Margherita pizza and its very comparable to those I had while on vacation in NYC once.

I have friends of mine who're from NY who say its pretty accurate.

Dim Sum in Fullerton? YES!

CAB in Fullerton has been pretty crowded on weekends, particularly Sundays, during the traditional Dim Sum hours and with NFL crowds in the bar. Never full, never a wait, however.

Other than that, its pretty dead, but the owners have been trying a lot of special things
like sporting event specials (boxing, football, etc.). I notice that their sign used to also say "Sushi Bar", it now says "Sports Bar".

They've also been playing around with different versions of the Dim Sum menu, offering both the traditional as well as offering combo plates.

I live right near there, and go by quite often. During December, it was hell to park there because of the Costco and Toys R US nearby.

Worthy delis in OC?

Personally, the only Jewish Deli/Restaurant in OC that I find workable is Benjies in Tustin.

Good Corned Beef, good pastrami, good pickles.

And not some big name chain like Jerry's with big prices.

Wasting Gas In Fullerton

Just a note: The Rail is now closed. I think their location was taken over by the new nightclub next door (where the Indian restaurant used to be).

Anybody ever done T'giving takeout?

We've done takeout Thanksgiving over the past few years with mixed results.

We did it for 2-3 years from Knotts' Berry Farm, and it was great.

However, last year, the turkey was not very brown, looked like it wasn't completely
cooked. We had to finish it off in the oven. Sides from there were great.

However, I don't think we'll go back there again.

Best Dim Sum

There's a new place in OC called California Asian Bistro. Its on Harbor just north of Orangethorpe, in the site where Spoons used to be.

They're a different kind of asian restaurant, featuring some Chinese dishes ("Hong Kong Fusion Lunch"), some Korean dishes, Japanese food and a Sushi Bar.

Until 3pm each day, they also have Dim Sum. No carts, order off a paper menu.

I'm no great authority on dim sum, but what I had, I liked.

On the weekend (Saturday night), the clientele was largely asian, so I would
guess its pretty good?

I liked it, anyway.

Car Hop Drive-ins in SoCal?

If you're looking for a carhop drive in with rollerskating carhops (and somewhat scantily-clad carhops at that), there's:

Angelo's Hamburgers
511 S State College Blvd
Anaheim, CA 92806, US
(714) 533-1401

Burgers, beer, fries, Loud Jukebox music, etc. I think they may have the whole gyros and fried zucchini thing, too. Some nights they're packed, especially when they have custom car nights.

Don't expect Zagat-rated cuisine, but the burgers are fairly large and tasty.

And the carhops aren't bad to look at either...;-)

Chicago Style Popcorn?

Popcornopolis at Universal Studios ( has very good Caramel Corn.

I grew up in Chicago, but never heard of Garrett's, so I have nothing to compare to.

But this is the closest I've seen to the Caramel Corn I used to get back there.
They also sell their packaged product through the Famima! Convenience Stores. Not hot, can't be near as fresh, but good enough in a pinch.

Billy's Deli - Glendale - Is it any good?

Of all the places I've tried (granted, I haven't tried them all yet), Billy's has just about the best pastrami sandwich.

Oh, and I like the older waitress who tells the dirty jokes as well. Evelyn, is it?

Now, if I could only convince them to open one up in OC.....

Great Baked Goods in OC?

Two that I frequent are:

Judy Lynn Bakery
113 E Commonwealth Ave
Fullerton, California 92832

Poul's Danish-American Bakery
770 N Tustin St, Orange, CA

I've heard they're both owned by the same family, but don't
know that for a fact.

Both have very good rolls, danish and breads.

Ice Creams

Can anyone tell me if Dr. Bob's has any locations that do cones?

I usually get some at the LA County Fair location, but I don't think that one
is open the rest of the year, or is it?

I'm torn between Fosselman's and Dr. Bob's....

Aebleskiver in LA

This probably doesn't help right now, but I know that the Danish Lutheran Church from OC
always has a booth at the Orange Food Fair (every Labor Day weekend) that makes
really good Aebleskivers.

They don't use lingonberries (too expensive, I guess). They use some kind of a raspberry syrup or jam.

New BBQ in Burbank

That would be

Smokin' Jack's Kansas City BBQ
220 N. San Fernando Blvd., Burbank, CA 91502
(818) 842-RIBS

I think they're the same guys who used to sell BBQ sandwiches
out of the auto repair shop on Victory.

If so, their brisket sandwiches used to be quite good, although
there was only one or two plastic tables to eat on outside the auto place.

And, given all, it wasn't exactly the most pleasant of surroundings for one's meal.

Obviously, the new location would be better than sitting
outside an auto repair on Victory.

Dunno about the price or the food at the new location.

Can't vouch for any of these places, but here's a list of

ISO German Smoked Pork Chops

Another thing I always buy from Schreiner's is their Canadian Bacon.

They'll cut it to your thickness, and its also very smoky.

Much better than the grocery store stuff.

LA County Fair food review

I was tempted to do the LA-county-fair-fry-a-thon, but I resisted and just went to my old stand-by, the Chuck Wagon.

Brisket dinner was good (as usual), but I always go around the wagon and get an ear of corn to go with it.

On the way out, I picked up the corn dog and lemonade, and ate near my car (while waiting for my car to cool down to 100 degrees or so!)

Sushi School/Class/Course

I've taken the the sushi and sashimi classes at Sur La Table.

They were a lot of fun, and given by one of the instructors
from the CA Sushi Academy. The instructor I had was Phillip Yi.

These classes aren't aimed at those who want to become professional sushi chefs, but were very informative and did give hands-on instruction in making various types of sushi.

I learned a lot, and have used what I learned on several

Two Chili My Soul notes ...

I really don't think Kobe Beef would work with chili.

Its so tender, the long cooking time of chili would just
about reduce it to paste (or gravy!)

And, nobody wants to pay for kobe paste chili.

Giovanni's Fullerton

I haven't tried it yet, but some of the signs now say:

"Under the Original Management"

I've heard from others that the original family who owned it
has now taken it back.

Dunno about quality, though.

LA county Fair what food was good in the past fairs

The LA fair is the only place I will get a corn dog.

Mostly because I only allow myself one of these per year, but secondly because the fair stands make and sell so many of them that they're just about always fresh (I look over the stand before buying to see if they're cooking them or if they're sitting under the heatlamps. Stay away from the heatlamp ones - lord knows how long they've been there!)

There's nothing better than a corn dog (made with real cornmeal batter, not pancake batter like some places) fresh out of the fryer, along with a fresh-squeeze lemonade.

Now, that's a day at the fair!

Palapa Grill - Fullerton?

While driving down Harbor the other day, I noticed that
next to Florentine's downtown grill was now a thatched
roof (facade) and the sign "Palapa Grill - Now open"

Anybody tried this place? Know anything about it??
