Grape leaves?

I realize this is an old post, but in my quest to get a reveiw for Market Baskets stuffed grape leaves, this came up. I noticed they are on sale this week at M.B., 10 for a dollar!
Has anyone had them, and give an opinion?

I went to M.B. For the first time recently and couldn't believe the low prices. Any other "goodies" at M.B. I should be on the look out for?

Top Chef in Boston?

Hmm...Kristen Kish was just on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live show as Andy Cohen's bartender.
Now I'm wondering if it was to put her face out there so people will recognize her if she makes an appearance on Top Chef.

Best Italian Restaurant in North End

We took a tour of the North End with a woman who's lived there for more than 40 yrs. she gave us the "low down" on the restaurants to avoid. The ones she recommended have been great and two that we really love are Atru's on Price St. and Antico Forno on Salem St. (Which by the way is frequented by one of Boston's celebrity chefs.)

Where Have All the Greek Restaurants Gone?

There were a couple places on the South Shore that I've enjoyed over the years, but as for Boston, Steve's on Newbury St. satisfies a craving when we're in the mood for Greek food.

Would you eat lime mayonnaise?

As a matter of fact, yesterday I mixed my Hellmans with lime juice and zest, for a turkey sandwich with avocado, tomato, Manchego cheese and cilantro.

I love to cook from scratch but every now and then I can't resist...(insert name of convenience food here)

I buy a packet of taco seasoning for the meat of my choice.
Put it in a casserole dish with a handful of frozen corn and pour over the Trader Joes corn bread batter. Bake it off until the cornbread looks done.
Serve it up with sour cream, avocado or any other Mexican condiments.
Nothing made from scratch there and it's very well received.

Fresh porcini mushrooms

What season are fresh porcinis available?
And where have you seen them in the Boston-South of Boston area?

No boil lasagne pasta

What have you tried? Do you have a preference?
Barilla, Delverde or another brand? How about the fresh lasagne sheets they sell in the market?
I've had success with Barilla, but I'd like to try the wider sheets such as Delverde.

Thomas's English Muffins

I sorry your having a disappointing experience with the new and NOT improved Thomas's E.M., but I'm glad to know it's not just me that has noticed a change. When I started this thread I wasn't expecting so many responses.
I have always preferred Bays E.M., but like others, I used Thomas's for a hamburger bun, but not anymore. The taste, texture and the way it splits leaving that dinky little top barely covers the burger.

Thomas's English Muffins

Yes, what did we do before Amazon? its a great option.

I've also had pretty good luck asking grocery managers at different stores to order a product they don't stock they've come through for me.
Anyway, just a thought....

Most markets sell them in the refrigerated section near the eggs.

$3 for a six pack? In my area they are $4.79.
If they tasted good like in the past I wouldn't care but.....

I'm sorry to hear about the Phillips crab cakes I used to love those.
I almost bought some at Costco yesterday.

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - January 2014!! [OLD]

I think this is a really good thread and worth responding to.
Some times you get attached to a TJ product and next time you go back you find that they no longer carry it.
Theses recommendations are bound to entice people to puchase the products and hopfully keep them on the shelves.
I'll go ahead and recommend the carrot cake in the freezer section. I haven't made one since I bought it. Big hit with anyone I've served it to. Plus I hate to bake...
Oh and also in the freezer section, the lemon bars with the shortcake crust. Pleasantly tart and a perfect after dinner bite to keep on hand.

toaster or toaster oven??

I purchased a Breville to have second oven, not as an oven to use instead of my primary oven.
I don't worry about saving energy, heating up the kitchen or being able to heat things up in a faster manner.

I regret not putting in a double oven and a warming drawer in my kitchen. I love having 2 ovens when I entertain. When my primary oven is being used for the main coarse I can use my Breville for the appetizer, or for something that may need to bake at a different temp. It also has a warm setting to hold food. The the top of the oven can be utilized as a plate warmer.
Even when dinner is made completly on the stovetop I have the plates or bowls in the Breville warming.

I'm so surprised no one has mentioned they use it in tandem w/ thier other oven.

toaster or toaster oven??

Here I go again raving about the Breville Smart oven.
Toasts bread and bagels perfectly. Crisp on the outside and soft center.
It has a setting for convection baking too.
I have the larger size and its pretty pricey, but for me it was well worth it to have another oven.

Ocean State Job Lots Yea/Nay 2014

A BIG yea! I check in weekly just to see if they have any new food finds. I'm always looking for the pricey gourmet items at a good price and I've been very lucky. My best find was a $20 bottle of Australian olive oil for $2.99 ( bought them all). Other items I stock up on for great prices are...
Capers (soooo reasonable)
Kalamata olives and green olives
Anchovies
Mustards
Olive oil
Pomi tomatoes
Risotto and basmati rice
Couscous and Israeli couscous
Dried mushrooms (Porcini double the price at S&S)
Panko bread crumbs (super bargain)
Peanut Butter Co. ( yummy and double the price at S&S ).
Jellies (Trappist Cranberry Conserve, great condiment)
Major Greys Chutney
Salsa
STASH herbal teas (1/2 price)
Nuts
Crackers
XOCHITL tortilla chips
Anyway that's all I can list off quickly. It's the hunt for the great "foodie find" that I find the most fun, being sure to check expiration dates.

What was your dish for this snowy evening?

Greek salad
Turkey pinenut-currant meatballs in marinara-kale sauce over Isreali couscous (mixed with olive oil and Parmesan.)

Chicken Kabob in Stoughton

OMG you've made my day. There used to be a Middle Eastern restaurant on Washington St. but it has sinced closed. I'm wondering if its been taken over, except the former restaurant was fairly large.
Going to check it out this weekend....

Commonly mispronounced foods

How about scallop....

Being close to Boston we say skawl-up
When I hear it pronounced skal-lup it sounds weird to be, but I know we're in the wrong.

Commonly mispronounced foods

Broo-skeh-tah is absolutely the correct way to say it.
Years ago while taking a food tour in Boston's North End the Italian-American tour guide said the mispronunciation of that word is her pet peeve.

Target/Super Target Yays and Nays 2014

1. I LOVE LOVE the Archer Farms apple fritter bread, the blueberry and the cinnamon raisin bread. (Its in the produce-meat section.) Sooooo good.
2. In the same section is the Market Pantry long loaf of French bread..it's perfectly soft on the inside and makes a great vessel for a party sandwich.
3. Giada's tomato sauces are great! The Basil Marinara is a pantry staple. I haven't made my own sauce for meatballs since I've discovered it.
4. My main reason for going there, Rick Bayless's packets of Mexican sauces. Very authentic and my secret to people thinking I'm a gourmet Mexican cook. His salsa is great too.
I buy a bunch every time I'm there because I'm so afraid they will discontinue it. I have seen it in one of the gourmet 'foodie' stores for a lot $$

These are my 4 reasons I keep going back to Target.

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - January 2014!! [OLD]

The spinach kale bites have become a handy go-to for me to keep in the freezer.
I mashed the spinach kale bites with a little olive oil and spread it on sliced French bread topped with grated sharp cheese. I popped it in oven to melt the cheese.
I'm thinking it would be good as a spread on crackers or on a ready made pizza crust topped with tomato and cheese. Or an addition to a quesadilla or grilled cheese sandwich?

Thomas's English Muffins

That's exactly how the Breville Smart Oven toasts.
It will do a bagel with a very crip exterior and a soft center. It's expensive but besides toasting bread perfectly, its a great 2nd oven with lots of handy features.

Best pasta sauce in a jar?

Just came across this post that was started way back when...
I've been using Giadas basil marinara sauce that I've only seen at Target, $3.49. It's absolutely delicious and very fresh tasting. Anyone I've told about it has become a convert. I'm
sharing this so people will buy it because I'm afraid Target won't carry it if it doesn't sell.
Another thing Target has that I'm pushing is Rick Bayless's Mexican sauces in a packet, sooo good.
