Is Baco Mercat really this bad?

FYI, a lot of time when a server seems to pass off the table, it's because of a mandatory rest break that the employer imposes thanks to California law. It could of course also be the server bouncing at the end of a shift, but it often isn't.

darn, and it was the only sort of offal that I'd consider eating again because it's so incredibly delicious.

Because government legislating morality is good. I assume this person is also opposed to gay marriage and supports mandatory burkas for women who venture out of their kitchens.

Whither almond paste?

I've found it at Ralph's and Whole Foods in the past, but if it's hard to find at your stores for some reason, Surfas should have it.

Italian Dinner-Los Angeles (Decisions?)

Yeah, Madeo's is pretty laughable. Overpriced Ital-American fare straight out of the 1960's.

Where to buy Unagi that isn't precooked?

SushiGo55 used to have amazing fresh eel. Haven't been in a couple of years, so don't know if that's still the case.

3% healthcare charge: coming to more receipts near you

You need to be looking at the cost to the employer, not the employee.

BP Oysterette - very disappointed

BP can be hit or miss, even with the same dishes. I've always liked the oysters, though. TBH, this review seems a bit odd. Steamers aren't going to turn mushy by sitting for 10 minutes after being cooked, and I find it more than a bit unlikely that there was "green slime" coating the inside of live oysters (and you would know if they were dead).

SOUTH END --- phenomenal pizza crust

Yeah this is just getting more confusing. How on Earth are Mozza/Milo cracker-type crusts?

Is Settebello pizza special?

Yeah, that was just a bizarre thing to say after railing against Mozza.

SOUTH END --- phenomenal pizza crust

Odd, most of the pics I could find make the pizza look pillowy, but this one looks more like a traditional Roman:

Definitely want to try this place out.

SOUTH END --- phenomenal pizza crust

Those pics don't look Roman style (crispy), they look more like Mozza-style.

LA not mentioned as a good city for foodies

That article is even worse than Conde Nast's.

Tuna Melt

Surfas in Culver City does, and it's a great sandwich.

Yet Another SF Hound Seeking Advice

Another vote for Tar and Roses in Santa Monica.

Also, one of the few things I think LA does better than SF is Japanese. I'd go somewhere in Little Tokyo (downtown) or Sawtelle. Lots of threads on those two areas.

Belcampo Cheeseburger

Did you taste any "baking spice" seasoning on the patty as someone reported in the SM Belcampo thread?

Belcampo Meat Co. opening night

I just re-read that thread and a few people mentioned cloves in the ketchup. If it's only the ketchup, that's avoidable and more forgivable (though still dumb).

Belcampo Meat Co. opening night

That sounds repulsive! I'm surprised nobody mentioned this in the lovefest about Belcampo in the other thread. If this is standard for their burgers, I'll be crossing them off the list.

ROCKENWAGNER - POOR MANAGEMENT

Yeah, I'd be annoyed too. FWIW, the Mendo mothership has good customer service in my experience. I sent an email politely griping about the shrinking amount of proteins in my recent sandwiches, and they gave me a pretty professional and concerned response that looped in the management of the particular branch.

ROCKENWAGNER - POOR MANAGEMENT

Any chance the Mendo employee was just trying to make a joke, since they already cut all of their sandwiches in half?

I don't know if it's the best, but I liked the version at Pecorino in Brentwood.

I haven't seen Japanese Wagyu at Vicente; only "American Wagyu." Curious if anyone can else has seen the real thing there.

cream pies

Yeah, the banana cream pie at Bandera is a lot better than Apple Pan's. Not only because of the dark chocolate, but the crust is much thicker.

I'll second this. Also, Providence and Craft are good choices.

My guess is frozen, just like the lower end sushi places.

I really want to like Fig, but I just don't.

Tar and Roses is orders of magnitude better than Fig. Such a a great restaurant (other than their inability to seat you on time).

Not a fan either, but mainly for the atmosphere. I've yet to find a comfortable table there.
