coeur de lion cheese
It's a Camembert d=from the Normandie area. And that is a very good price.
Seaport Farmers Market Rethinking Business Plan
It's tough. I want to support the Seaport market as much as I can but I also visit the Brewery market on Saturday mornings. I go really early to avoid the crowds. I like Hutton Farms produce at the Brewery market. If la Vandeene and Getaway were at the brewery market I would probably not go to the Seaport. But, I also like the fact that I can get fish, meat and dairy on any day of the week from the Seaport market. The comparisons I hear are all about the St.Lawrence Market in TO or the Granville market in Van. But both those cities have a far greater population than Halifax. I really hoped to be able to do my market shopping on Wednesdays and Sundays when the Seaport first opened but the lack of vendors on Wednesday made it not worth my while.
I really don't know what the solution is. The Seaport market needs more vendors on weekdays to make it worth going but they need more people attending to make it worth their while. A classic catch 22. Until then I will continue with my early Saturday morning routine.
Where to buy oysters in Halifax?
You can try the Fish Shop at the Seaport Market or Indian Point Mussels at the Brewery Market (yes, they have oysters too).
Annapolis Valley wineries
I don't think all of them offer tours. I am pretty sure Grand Pre does but not sure about the rest.
Annapolis Valley wineries
Not to be missed are Gaspereau, L'Acadie (which are close to each other) and Grand Pre. You can easily visit these three as well as Muir Murray (near Grand Pre) and Blomidon in the same day.
Unfortunately, Benjamin Bridge does not have a wine shop that is open to visitors.
Induction cooking
I've only ever used an induction cooktop in a restaurant setting but they work wonderfully. You get hot pans very quickly and can control the temperature of your pans as you would with gas.
The only major con is price. We have a gas stove at home and get our propane tank refilled once a year and it never goes beyond 1/4 full...and we cook a lot. So cost of gas is minimal. Induction stoves are MUCH more expensive and will of course affect your power bills.
Halifax: where to get fresh Kaffir lime leaves?
Try
Tian Phat Asian Grocery
209 Bedford Hwy
Halifax, NS B3M 2J9, Canada
They usually have frozen lime leaves and sometimes they have kaffir limes as well as galangal and other Thai ingredients.
San Marzano canned tomatoes in Halifax>
I've purchased some at Costco before. Can't remember the price but as with all Costco stuff you can buy in bulk...assuming they have it in stock still.
Sunchokes or Jerusalem artichokes
I've looked the for the past two weeks but have not seen any. I do not recall the name of the farm that had them and they have not been at the market since before Xmas. Sorry.
You could try Hutton farms at the old market (Brewery), Ted had burdock root recently but no sunchokes.
Sunchokes or Jerusalem artichokes
There are a couple vendors at the market on Saturdays that carry sunchokes. They should still be available right now. At least there were some last week.
I desperately and urgently look for the duck fat~please help me with this!
How much do you need? I have a bucket of it in my freezer. I could probably spare 1liter.
Halifax - Gourmet delivery?
There is this place:
http://www.itsawrapgiftbasketshalifax.com/
though I have never tried them. Pete's also does food baskets.
Nice Dinner in/near Truro?
I had a very nice meal here:
http://www.johnstanfieldinn.com/dining.htm
although that was a few years ago now. The location is kinda odd (It's in the parking lot of a HoJos) but the food was really good.
Creme Fraiche-where to buy in Halifax/Dartmouth
I completely agree. It's easy to make and the stuff at Pete's is WAY expensive.
Need Downtown Calgary Gourmet Food Shopping Help
I need to find a good gourmet food store in downtown Calgary with a good butcher shop or selection of meats. I also require some fresh produce...nothing too exotic but fresh!

Culinary Schools in Halifax/St Johns?
NSCC Akerly campus in Dartmouth has a good program.
Carry-out Lobster in Nova Scotia & PEI
I'm pretty sure you can get lobster to go from the Water Prince in Charlottetown.

Magnolia's Grill, Lunenburg
I completely agree. As someone with 15 years of professional kitchen experience I can honestly say I've had more than a few odd requests. Any kitchen worth their salt should be able to accommodate any food allergies...unless of course everything on the menu is pre-made. Sure it may take a bit of time to prepare, but there is no reason that the customer should be asked to leave.
New to Halifax
They may have moved since you were last here. They used to be on Purcell's Cove Rd but have since relocated to 6285 Quinpool Rd which is on the peninsula.
Excellent new restaurant-- Indochine Banh Mi in Halifax
I agree! I had a lemongrass chicken sandwich from there on Friday that was deliciously refreshing...especially on such a hot day. My only fear is that with three people working the counter, and me as the only customer on a Friday at lunchtime, they might not stick around. Please Haligonians, check out this place.
Halifax - lobster season?
http://www.gov.ns.ca/fish/marine/map/lobster_full.shtml
There are many lobster seasons in Nova Scotia. The Halifax to Digby season ends May 31st. The Eastern Shore season opened April 1 and runs until end of June. Essentially, you can always get fresh lobster in Nova Scotia.
Top Five In Halifax
1. Fid
2. Chives
3. Gio
4. Da Maurizio's
5. Jane's on the Common
best in-store beer selections?
I agree with Depaneur Peluso. An incredible selection and often have some on sale. Really doesn't look like much from the outside but I'd say 75% of the store is beer!
Halifax Essentials
If you search this board you'll find many recommendations.
Most will agree that Fid, Chives and Janes on the Common are some of the best places to eat.
Halifax Sushi Search
I like Sushi Shige on Spring Garden Rd. Always the best fish in town. The only draw back is that I don't think they take reservations. They do have tables at the back that would accommodate a larger group.
Doraku (on Dresden Row) is also very good and they have separate seating areas as well.
Dharma sushi is probably the most affordable and maybe the best for a family and is pretty good.
A few days in Halifax
Not sure which crowd hfxleo is hangin' with but I've never heard the North Commons referred to as "the Plateau". This ain't Montreal here.
Does that make Brooklyn Warehouse NoWeQuNo?
I would most definitely avoid Murphy's and would recommend both Fid and Coastal Coffee.
I've never been impressed with Ill Mercado...ridiculously salty food.
