Surely there are some restaurants here you like??? Postuing in a restaurant with subpar food is everywhere -- think The Ivy in LA or (now-closed) Elaine's in NYC. Those aren't the types who tend to post on Chowhound though. Your Terra experience is exactly what we need more of here. It would be nice to read more about Charlotte restaurants, good or bad.

Interesting observation. I haven't tried 5 Church but I see it's on carolinadog's list below and you say the food is decent so I'll give it a try.

With Johnson & Wales in town, I'd think there would be a lot of good local chefs.

Charlotte Chowhounds

Hi all:

Just wondering how many Charlotte hounds are out there? We don't seem to have much participation on Chowhound for a pretty big city. I realize we're not a tourist destination like Asheville or Charleston but I'd like to think we have enough good food to get some active discussions going.

Being pretty new to the area, I'd love some good recommendations on where to eat. I know Bistro La Bon is tops on my list after the recent posts. Anything else I need to try?

Thanks!

Ballantyne Area in Charlotte

We went to Vine but, due to a large lunch, only had a few things. We shared the BLT flatbread, the French Dip (recommended by our server) and the banana cream pie. Everthing was just "ok". The entrees looked a bit more creative so I probably would have done better ordering one of them.

Service was a little odd. The server was very young and didn't know how to describe things -- i.e., "Um...like a citrus reduction...um...almost." But he was attentive and nice so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

The flatbread was pretty good with bacon, good tomatoes, arugula and a mayo-based sauce drizzled on top. The crust was very thin and a tad overcooked.

The French Dip came with cheese that was only slightly melted. It was fine but bland. (I don't like cheese on a French Dip but forgot to have it omitted.) The seasoned fries were not hot and had lots of broken, stubby pieces.

The pie was very good with a coconut crust and good banana filling.

Overall it was a good place for a business-y dinner but I probably ordered the wrong things.

Thanks for all of the advice!

Is Villa Antonio any good? I haven't heard much about it but am relatively new to the area.

Thanks, Lynnlato. Vine loks good. I've eaten at 131 Main many times (and love it too) so I'd rather try something different. What about "ethnic" food around there? I really don't know the area at all! Any good Thai, Mexican, Vietnamese, or other?

Hi all. I am taking a business associate out for dinner next Tuesday. I'm looking for a mid-priced place near the Ballantyne Hotel. Any type of food except sushi is good. Thanks in advance!

Charlotte Observer

Thanks, everyone. I am a little disappointed in the food section but understand the limitations. One suggestion is to include entree prices when reviewing a restaurant. It makes a big difference to me if a dish costs $25 and is 3 stars or $9 and 3 stars. Of course, 3 stars for everything is probably not very accurate reviewing. (But I'm too new to have seen that trend.)

Thanks for the nice replies. I'm glad to be here.
