Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - January 2014!! [OLD]

OhioMomHound is having me share two of her recent purchases with the group:
YAY The sublime ice cream sandwiches (easy on the taste buds, not on the waistline)
Yay/meh on the black pepper crusted salame. Good flavor, could have a better texture.

Thomas's English Muffins

Yes! So glad this thread was created.
My mom and I have really noticed a difference not only in Thomas' english muffins, but also Aunt Millie's as of late, too. The Aunt Millie's muffins no longer split easily, and the quality of both brands has declined immensely.
Anyone have the insider scoop on Aunt Millie's?

Our new favorite is Trader Joe's British muffins when we can get them, or the Meijer brand english muffins.. the latter not nearly as delectable but are comparable to AM and Thomas for a much better price.

What food like/dislikes do you have that are contradictory and make no sense?

Love peas, absolutely hate sugar snap peas or snow peas.
Love dried coconut and coconut meat, can't stand coconut water.

Interesting! How about fresh banana in a smoothie or milkshake?

'Staple' foods you just don't like

Interesting! I don't like cantaloupe, and my mom said that's what she craved and ate every day when she was pregnant with me.

(My personal) Best chain pizza rankings

To be honest I will eat and enjoy any type of pizza from any pizza joint.
But my absolute least favorite of all time is LaRosa's (Cincinnati based). Sickly sweet sauce. Yuck.
Just looked up Papa Murphy locations and it appears I have one about 20 minutes away! Will give it a try and report back.

COOKIES - Home Cooking Dish of the Month (December 2013)

Some may think these are trite and belong on the "white trash" list, but my family demands these peanut butter cup cookies every year:

What do you do when you are bored/stumped about what to make

We are one in the same, Miri1.

I love to cook for others, but sometimes I love that I only have to worry about my own dinner most nights.
I'd feel guilty serving my parents oreos dipped in peanut butter, though I'm sure they wouldn't complain!

Gift card or home made cookies/candy for coworker gifts

You could present a few festive holiday cookies with each gift card! A small box or bag with 2-3 cookies, attach a gift card to the outside. Personable and festive, but keeps the money component that, lets be honest, every one needs/wants this time of year.

What is proper if Im paying for drinks and invites are paying for their own dinner?

Yes, I agree.
On a budget, I would offer drinks and appetizers and bump up the party time an hour or two.Make it clear on the invitation.
Your guests can decide where they'd like to dine for dinner (which is a nice option for those who don't want to spend $15 or $20 per plate at your selected restaurant. Or for those who don't want to eat up an entire night at your festivities-- sorry, but true.)

Keep in mind, you know your guests better than anybody on the internet! Good luck, and happy early birthday to your husband.

I agree, juliejulez! Didn't mean to copy your point in my comment. I hadn't seen yours before posting.

The hard debate over nutrition standards for food stamp benefits

Who defines what is "healthy" enough for food stamps?

Healthy sure looks different for those with a vegan diet versus paleo.

Turkey Day 2013: Lessons Learned

I too love plain roasted sweet potatoes, but I have one brother who requests the marshmallow sugary version every year.

We've come to compromise with roasting whole plain sweet potatoes and providing a "toppings" bar.
I like a dash of salt and a pat of butter. He likes to dress his up with brown sugar, cinnamon, butter, and marshmallows.

The best part is that the leftover sweet potatoes are always plain and can be used in a number of ways, sweet or savory, for the following week!

Favorite recipes with dried cherries

Hi Hounds,

I've accumulated a few too many bags of dried cherries after several trips to "that state up North" this summer. I've been using them in chicken salad and granola..
Any other favorite uses? Any recipes with dried cherries?

I snack on them plain or in trail mix often, but I'm looking for something a little different.. Particularly something with a nice presentation for company.

Thanks in advance.

The psychology of distrusting GMOs.

100% agree, GH.

I am an "International Food Security Policy" major in university right now, with a second major in "Human Nutrition".
GMOs are not a point of contention anymore within either realm of study. Academia fully supports and encourages the use of GMOs and other hybridization efforts. Though they are not vital to feeding the U.S. population, they bring down food prices (along with the use of subsidies.. which are the real issue here, but that's a discussion for another thread), and could be the saving grace for the developing world.

Younger generations appear to be more accepting of the utilization of genetic modifications in agriculture. We often complete surveys on the first day of class for the professors to "get to know" their selection of students for the semester. One question (in classes for either major) are always on GMOs. When results are posted, nearly 100% of students accept and encourage the use of GMO's.

Of course, they do have some negative effects such as decreasing biodiversity... but selective breeding has been doing that since before Norman Borlaug's time.

Would I choose to live in a world without big agribusiness ventures that participate in monoculture ventures? Sure, but with globalization comes "mcdonaldization" of society in nearly every aspect, including agriculture. It's part of our nation's development.

What menu items you can't resist when you see them

Okra stew! In house-made tomato sauce (optional lamb) with pita bread.

I know okra is a very polarizing food here among the 'Hounds, but I personally can't get enough of it. Mmm.. now I'm craving Turkish.

Wine with dinner when non-drinkers are present?

I think that's very nice, tcamp.

My uncle is an "AA guest" at our family parties and dinners. He brings a bottle of sparkling juice so he can participate in toasts. Bonus points, he can share with the kids! He's a very good sport about it, and would never expect the party to be without alcohol just for him.

Help me feed my father in law some vegetables

<<Green smoothies>>

Great idea, Tara.
It's a good breakfast food, and you can mask the flavor of spinach behind peanut butter and banana (and maybe even some chocolate!).

Just don't put it in a clear cup. He might not try a drink that looks like green sludge. ;)

Best of luck to you and your FIL!
