Breakfast near Jensen Beach

Try Jan's place in downtown Jensen beach- right on the circle, across the street from Shakra's Deli.

Speaking of BBQ- how do you feel about the Fort Pierce institution, Dale's??

Let me know what you find out! I am going to try and get there this weekend and check things out. I am in PSL so it's a bit of a trek for me too- but I'm always down to drive for good food!

Martin County/Stuart trip this week

LL- The wings are crunchy and the sauce is on the side. The come out hot and delciously crisp- there is literally no way you can eat just one. I love a crispy wing! Also, try the crispy pork shanks (those aren't on the regular large menu they hand you when you sit down, but rather the "bar menu" that is sitting on the tables in the bar)- they've got a special name for them that I can't remember, but they're tasty, too!

I think Conchy Joe's is more about the view than the food? Although you can get the same view with better food at the Dolphin IMHO.

Has anybody tried this place yet? The menu looks interesting!

Martin County/Stuart trip this week

I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestions for 11 Maple Street...it is a wonderful place.

As for Conchy Joe's- I prefer the Dolphin Bar which is located a couple of miles down IRDrive and owned by the same people...but the food is FAR AND AWAY better than anything you will get at Conchy's. Please, for the love of God, try their chicken wings and I promise that you will not be disappointed. Wings at the Dolphin has been a Saturday afternoon tradition that my family and friends try not to miss!

Port St. Lucie recs

The thai place across from Dos Amigos- called Basil Garden Thai- is awesome, too, and family- friendly as well.

Port St. Lucie recs

Just to clarify- Archie's is in Fort Pierce, not Port St. Lucie, on A1A

Where have you always had a bad meal?

The Joshua Tree and Sagra. Blec.

Best Coffee in Boston

The coffee at Sound Bites is awesome!

Pizza in Miami

There is this amazing little spot in South Miami that I used to go to all the time when I was in school at UMiami called Pizza Kitchen. It's in a strip mall that has a bunch of crap in it, including a thai place called SeaSiam (?? if i remember correctly) and a tackle store...Pizza Kitchen is in the corner towards the back and I think the sign on the marquee just says "PIZZA". But it is AWESOME. I'm not a fan of Casola's or Miami's Best (blec)- I always felt like Pizza Kitchen was more of a NY-Style slice. It's a really small place, no inside seating, just a couple of plastic tables outside if you can't wait until you get home (which I never could)!!! They've also got a great house made garlic/cheese bread that I think they make with the pizza dough that rocks.

Also, can't remember, but I'm pretty sure there is one day a week they aren't open- so just call ahead and if the phone keeps ringing, then that's the day :)

Flagler Grill in Stuart Fl

I second LargeLife's rec on 11 Maple Street. I have never had a bad meal there and the atmosphere and food are heads above the Flagler Grill (which I've been to several times and never had a consistently good meal). 11 Maple Street is located off a little street in a converted house/cottage and the mismatched tables lend a really romantic and cool vibe to the place. The chef owner and his wife have been in the area for over 20 years and the food is always interesting and delicious. The menu changes according to whatever is fresh and delicious that day! I think that one of the only menu items that doesn't change is his conch w/lime appetizer- which rocks. The menu is pricey, but not any more so than FG...and I feel like it's worth it to support local places like this that are commited to excellence and doing something unique.

Highland Kitchen

Am pleased to report a lovely experience at Highland Kitchen as well! The BF and I stopped in on Saturday night around 7:15 after catching a movie at the Sommerville Theatre (which is great, btw, and serves beer and wine!). The place was busy, but not uncomfortably packed and we ended up waiting about 25-30min for a table.

Even though the seating for two-tops wasn't ideal for privacy- we both had a really great meal. He ordered the rigatoni, which was just okay, and I ordered the meatloaf- which was awesome for a cold night. The fried calamari with the pickled peppers was great, too. I liked the smokey dipping sauce that came with. Tried two different desserts- he, the "simple chocolate cake", which rocked, and me the apple crumble, which I wasn't in love with as the apples didn't seem cooked?

Had a nice bottle of rioja with dinner and overall a great experience. Will definitely be going back next time I'm in Beantown!

Visit to Coconut Grove - Non-tourist restaurants?

I will put in my vote for the little French place, Le Bouchon, right in the middle of the grove by Sandbar and Tavern. Maybe 30 seats? But I've never had a bad meal there. Excellent people watching, but go early before all the frat brats come out to party.

Santarpio's-- what don't I get?

I have to say that I fall under the 'I don't get it catagory' as well. I'm always back and forth to Boston and would see the sign every time I hit the airport...so a couple of months ago I asked the bf to pick up some pizzas (one cheese, one pepperoni) at Santarpio's. His apartment is maybeeeee 10 minutes from the airport and by the time we got home, the pizza was totally soggy with all of that overly sweet sauce. I was not a fan.

Maybe the magic lies in the Santarpio's experience vs. the take-out?

TORO: Great experience; Much Improved

Another beverage concoction that struck me as odd when I lived in Spain was the light beer + selzer water/club soda thing. Doubt they have that at Toro!

TORO: Great experience; Much Improved

I love Toro! I've actually never had a bad experience there- and try to stop in whenever I'm in Boston.

My faves are the Gambas al ajillo, the grilled corn, and the paella valenciana. Last time I was there, we tried the chickpeas with chorizo- those were delicious as well. I don't know if the grilled razor clams are a regular menu item, but the first time I went there I ordered them at the bar and they were awesome. Can't really go wrong, either, with a nice dish of the marinated olives (lemon, red pepper flakes, and maybe something else) and some patatas bravas. Their cocktail list is pretty interesting, as well- I liked that they tip their hat to the 'ghetto drink' of Spain- the calimocho! Red wine and coke=awesome. We used to get big boxes of Don Simon 69pta wine and Kas and drink it various parks around Spain when I lived there in 2002!

scones, where do you buy the most delicious ones?

Tasty scones at Sound Bites in Sommerville!

Do all farmers markets in Florida stink?

The Farmer's Market in downtown Fort Pierce (by the marina) on Saturday mornings is rather good. Quality organic veggies/fruits. Nice scene in the morning. Stop off at the Captain's Galley beforehand for breakfast (eggs bene!)

Highland Kitchen

Thinking about trying this next time I'm in Boston in a couple of weeks. The bf literally lives 5 minutes from there, so it's on! Question- do they take reservations? There isn't any info on the website.

TOP MULTI-UNIT INDIES IN FLA

What, no sweet Dade love for Chicken Kitchen?!

TOP WINGS IN FLA

My votes go for
1)SPORTS GRILL in Kendall/Miami for tasty grilled wings and
2)THE DOLPHIN BAR in Stuart, FL for the most delicious wings of my life!

Current 2008 Miami Beach recs

For what it's worth, I've never had a poor meal at Tuscan Steak- but everything is served family-style, so it might not be the best choice if you are solo on your trip.
