I stayed on Grace Bay at the Sands a couple of weeks ago and wanted to let folks know about some of the great food that we had. We had a couple of really stand out meals. We had a large group of 10-12 people and I was amazed at our ability to get reservations at most of the places we wanted to go to. I had done research ahead of time, but I did not make reservations until we were on the island. We were there for the last week of lobster season.
Our favorite by far was Mango Reef. We went on a Friday night and were able to get a table on the beach for all of us. We listened to live entertainment (NaDa) with our toes in the sand while watching the sunset. The food was solidly good; some things were great. This was our last night and most of us got various lobster dishes, and the consensus was that they were the most properly cooked (not overdone!) of the week. The curry snapper dish and the similar curry lobster dish were excellent. The shrimp appetizers were cooked perfectly as well. For wine, we had a descent Cab for a reasonable $47/bottle.
Another standout meal was at Sailing Paradise, which is in the Blue Hills. They provided a free shuttle for our whole party of 12. We sat out on a deck pretty much over the water. The food was great, the cracked conch melts in your mouth. The day we went was my daughter's 10th birthday, and they made it an event! The owner ran out to the store while we were eating and bought candles which were put into their last slice of key lime pie. They also turned on a birthday song that my girls and I danced to between the tables. She declared it the best birthday ever. I appreciated how they were accomodating to our large party and went out of their way to really make our meal special.
We were there for the full moon so we went to the Bay Bistro Full Moon BBQ. This ended up being a great value as we were able to get a variety of food and as much roast pig as we wanted. The bonfire on the beach with smores was great fun too.
Speaking of the Bay Bistro; they make housemade ice cream. We went there for late night desert a few times. My favorite was the roasted coconut.
Being that we stayed at the Sands, we went to Hemmingway's for various meals throughout the week. We preferred it for lunch or breakfast over dinner when the meals when service tended to be very slow and the food tended to be a bit overcooked. My girls decided they made the best french fries we had.
We also went to the Vix, which was fine. They make a good burger that felt like the bargin of the menu.
