July 2011 short report on two meals in Torino: Ristorante Tre Galline and Le Vitel Etonne, plus gelati

barberinibee I'm sorry to read about your gelato delusion ..about GROM, Torino is the place where everything started, the first "gelateria" GROM was opened in near Piazza Castello in Via Carlo Alberto. Aboun the gelato, next time you will pass from Torino let me know I will recommend you my "best place" in town.

Eating through the Piemonte region

Well if you stay few nights in Torino I would recommend a vist to Eataly Torino (where everything started...long before the one in NYC), eating to:
AS promised here the phone numbers and map to "Porto di Savona", "Michele" and "Kuoki"
Porto di Savona:Piazza Vittorio Veneto, 2 Torino - 011 817 3500
Michele:Piazza Vittorio Veneto, 4 Torino (pizza al tegamino..ask for that...)
Kuoki: VIA FERRARI GAUDENZIO,. (10124) Torino (TO). Tel.011 8397865

In case anyway you should try too "ristorante tre galli" in the quadrilatero romano.

Lunch along the A26 or A5 between Ivrea and Alessandria?

I would suggest you this one"http://www.trattoriadellavigna.it/" it is just a 4 km from the Carmagnola exit on A6 and you would be just out of Torino.

here the map from google maps "http://maps.google.it/maps?f=d&so..."

Lunch along the A26 or A5 between Ivrea and Alessandria?

why not drive to torino and use the a6, it's shorter than a26, so you may choose between a Torino resturant or something else like this one: http://www.ristoranteiportici.it/inde... this is a slow food resturant 8 km from a6

Torino, Looking for Suggestions

Here my suggestion
• La via del sale (no need to call for reservation): This place is a typical slow food spot, where to taste piedmonts “best of”, everything is delicious, I suggest you the anchovies in green sauce, all the “primi” and the meat (I remember an incredible brasato in wine jam). LA VIA DEL SALE - Via San Francesco da Paola 2 phone:011.888389. (30 to 50 Euros per person a complete menu).

• Tre Galli:Well.. this is definetly the most knows restaurant of Torino, it is in the “quadrilatero romano” , everything there is fabulous, I would suggest you to make a reservation but, in perfect spirit of Torino you may simply go there and if you’ll not find a table just walk around and find another of the many restaurants. This is the center of the “movida” , where young ppl go to eat, drink, dance, talk..and of course meet. It’s open at lunch as for dinner but, definetly I suggest you to go there at night. (In Torino dinner means from 19.30 to midnight and sometimes over)TRE GALLI:Via Sant’Agostino 25, phone: 011.5217114

• Porto di Savona: Maybe one of the best restaurants in Torino, but better to call before or, if you’re hanging around enter and reserve a table. It is on the “right top corner” of Piazza Vittorio, in its’ menu you’ll find all the typical piedmonts dishes. It definetly worth a visit, if you may go inside you’ll see a typical Italian “trattoria”..I personally suggest you the “tiramisu” or the “bonet” (pronounced beau-net (like bu(reau) and net(working)) as sweets at the end of the meal. . PORTO DI SAVONA: Piazza Vittorio 2 phone:0118173500

The Basics: How to Make Italian Meatballs in Sauce

Ketchup I suppose that meatballs are a common dish expecially in most of the european countries so could be a Belgian dish as an Italian dish. Now as italian what I may say about the recipe is that this one is called "polpette al ragu' " here and it is an italian recipe for sure, obviously if you consider the ragu as the "ragù alla bolognese", but of course one thing is the italian recipe another thing is a recipe that simply explain how to do meatball with sauce.
My mother cook meatballs in the olive oil first than in the ragù and I do the same but just beacuse , I personally like the good crust, but as you may see from this italian link "http://www.universocucina.com/site/ht..." the original recipe ask to cook them directly in the ragù.

Looks Like ALF Was Onto Something

Well I know sounds odd but yes cats are quite are a classic dish in Italy, mostly in northern culture, but obviusly not now.. In the early years of the last century (1920-1945) people used to kill and eat cats. Obviusly today it's illegal and nobody still do it. You may find "delicious" recpie in Piedmont (where I live), Lumbardy, Veneto and some parts of Trentino... if anyone would know more I will be moer than happy to write you back.

Turin or Bologna?

Ok I'm obviously for Torino..but just to help. From Venice you got a direct train to Torino in 4hrs you maybe be there... or if you are in Milan you got the hig speed train (1 hr) and you are in Torino. For bologna again from Milan you got the highspeed train but do not know what you got from Venice.
In case you will come to Torino try at least one of these : bunet (piedmont chocolate cake, marocchino (like a capuccino but with chocolate, coffe, milk),acciughe al verde (anchovies in green sauce),brasato al barolo (but this one is a winter dish so not the right time now).
Anyway in case let me know if you need help in Torino.

Welcome to Torino

Damn, I am really sorry Ali i saw Your post just now..so I think I'm a bit late.. in Val Susa I know a place who is knew as the "resturant of truck drivers"..is a small resturant located just before Bussoleno..it is easy to recognize since it is near a petrol station and for the number of trucks outside.
Quite unusual you will eat sit on long chair for 6/8 persons at time.I personally suggest the "Lasagne al forno".10/15 Euros for a complete dinner (wine and water included).
Ali if You read this one while You are in Italy.. write me back here I wil check this post daily.

Welcome to Torino

Finally I spent a little time around Porta Nuova, definetly I think was "C'era una volta", but I found even other 2 resturants similar to this one.
Few days ago I went to the "quadrilatero Romano" and tried (again) "Casa Martin", it's a nice resturant that share the place with a book publisher firm (martin).
The resturant offer a daily menu with a faboulous wine carte and for those who simply want to taste the "dopocena" (after dinner litteraly) a good list of cocktails alcholic and analcholic or,again, of wine (red and white).
There is no need to book in advance.
