Salted Caramel Frosting

I tried this recipe and had some problems- perhaps someone can help me?

Unfortunately, I only had whipping cream and not heavy cream so I used it. Based on the reviews, I used 1 stick of butter and doubled everything but the salt. I followed all other instructions explicitly. When I pulled the frosting out of the refrigerator after 45 minutes, it was soft, not completely like frosting but not set up like I expected. It also didn't cover a 9 in cake, so next time, I will have to make even more.

What did I do wrong? Suggestions for me?
