Local source need - Gabila knishes

All -

Has anyone seen Gabila knishes locally? I've been told they're available in Giants and Costcos but I can't find them in NoVA. Perhaps DC or MD?

Thanks.

Pre-theater dining near Arena Stage

Hello all -

My wife and I will be seeing a play at the Arena Stage on Saturday evening and want to have a nice dinner before hand. I've been told there's a new place close to the peformance site but the person telling me about it didn't recall the name. He also suggested Sou'Wester at the Mandarin. I've got a reservation at Acqua Al2 just in case; we haven't been but have heard good things about it.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Takoma Park dining recommendations

All -

My wife and I are meeting friends for dinner on Saturday evening. We're thinking of going to Takoma Park, a place none of us has ventured into much or at all. We're looking for recommendations of all types of cuisine, but would prefer sit down places with table service.

My thanks!

DC-area source for gueuze

All -

I've had several good samples of gueuze at Brasserie Beck but haven't been able to find many if any of them at local shops such as Whole Foods or Total Wine. I want to see if anyone's run across the stuff somewhere close by in DC/NoVA (Arlington, FC)/MD (Bethesda, SS, RVille).

Thanks for any suggestions.

DuPont Cir area - anything new and good for lunch

All -

I'm meeting a friend for lunch tomorrow in the DuPont Cir area and want to hit something new. I'm a bit tired of Levante's, Albertos, Kramer Books, etc. Has anything opened of late worth considering?

Thanks -

Wiinky's Burgers Arlington VA - No reports on the boards, what gives?

All -

I've been trolling the DC area board for any words of insight, recommendation, or bewariness about Wiinky's, one of the numerous burger joints to have opened in the N Arlington area. It's in the space formerly occupied by at least two Central American places in the past ten years, right across the street from the Gold's Gym.

What gives? Has anyone not been there or perhaps has an found it not worthy of even a bad review? I admit I haven't been yet; perhaps I should and post a review. If I've missed anything about the place on this board, please let me know.

Thanks!

Local source for - Old South brand "tomolives"

Fellow Hounds -

Especially the drinkers among you. A friend of mine recently mixed up a swell gin martini and used Old South brand "tomolives" (small, pickled tomatoes) in place of the green olives. I was floored and have made it my mission to score a bottle. Does anyone know of a place in NoVA (Arl; Falls Church; Alexandria; etc)/DC/MD (close in) that carries them? I suppose they don't have to be Old South so any other brand will do.

Thanks much!

ISO Family friendly restaurant in/near Foggy Bottom

All-

A friend has asked for suggestions of family friendly restaurants in or near Foggy Bottom. She has friends visiting with their three year old and six year old in tow. I don't know how well-behaved they are, but let's assume they're angelic model children.

The only place coming to mind is TGI Fridays; eh, not the best suggestion I know.

Thanks for your input.

Local source for Ubet's chocolate syrup - NoVA/DC/MD

Thanks. North Arlington but a buddy of mine who knows about such things said the Safeway on Lee Hwy carries it; or did some time ago.

Local source for Ubet's chocolate syrup - NoVA/DC/MD

All -

I want to make a few batches of eggcreams and chocolate milk and want to use the best: Ubet's chocolate syrup. I've searched high and low and have come up empty at the shelves of Giant, Whole Paycheck, and the HT.

Please, please, please let me know if you know where I can source this locally!

My best -

Kouign Aman in Paris - 12 arr. or reasonably close by

All -

Bon soir, French chowhounds. My wife will be traveling in Paris with a friend this weekend and early into next week. I've given her the task, readily and quickly accepted, to find the best kouign aman in Paris. My sister-in-law has already suggested Laduree, and a Sept '10 posting on the France board suggested Hugo and Victor and Philippe Conticini's La Patisserie des Reves.

Wife and friend are keen to try out the pastry in its natural habitat (yes, yes, I know it's Breton; Paris at least is in France while we are in DC!) and would like to sample different version.

Merci for any and all suggestions.

Usinger's sausages in DC/NoVA/MD

Dear hounds -

I'm just back from a swell trip to Milwaukee, where I ate some of the tastiest fare the middle-West has to offer. Among the treats were various types of Usinger's sausages - brats (natch), Hungarian style sausage, Italian - so now I'm on the hunt for the company's products locally. I can order online from them but would like to avoid that and want to see if any place in the any carries their stuff. I thought perhaps one of the local Wegman's. I'm willing to travel a good distance for the stuff.

Thanks so much for any suggestions.

Milwaukee recs needed - beer in particular

This is an update to my original post. First off, my thanks for these swell replies. My colleagues and I are over the moon about them and look forward to sampling the local fare. Apologies up front if any locals get sick of seeing a bunch of DC types around their places.

I want to ask if any one can recommend good Italian places to try? I was given to understand recently Milwaukee has a large Italian population; Sicilian I believe? Anyway, my thanks for any additional thoughts.

Milwaukee recs needed - beer in particular

Dear Wisconite Hounds -

I'm heading to Milwaukee for business this week and am staying through the weekend to see the Brewers v. PHillies game on 9/11. I'm looking for recommendations for places to eat good and cheap local fare. I'd like to hit a few joints that aren't over the top and serve good Wisconsin/Milwaukee food; brats, cheese, and beer.

I'm particularly interested in sampling good locally brewed beers, so please suggest any specific types I need to try while there. I'll be staying at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center but won't have a car. I"m willing to walk far and cab it too if the menu on offer is worth it.

Thanks much for your help.

Kouign amman in Quebec (Montreal) - can it be found

All -

I'll be up in Montreal this weekend and next week and want to ask if it's possible to get kouign amman at any patisserie? Yes, it's a Breton specialty but I figured I'd ask anyway.

My thanks -

DC to Northern VT (Plattsburg, St. Albans) - Good eats along 87 N (crossposted on S/N Boards)

All -

I'm off with the family on a roadtrip to Northern VT (Plattsburg, St. Albans) and want to get suggestions of places I should consider stopping for. Any kind of fare will do and the more local, unique to the area the better.

Note I'm cross posting this in the So/No NE boards.

Thanks much for your suggestions!

Local source for guindilla peppers (spicy/sweet peppers in vinegar)

All -

I want to see if anyone knows of a local source of guindilla peppers (http://www.tienda.com/food/products/vg-11.html?site=1)? I can't recall seeing them at any bodega - La Union, El Chaparral (RIP BTW).

Thanks.

Local source for Va country ham - NoVA/DC/MD

I'm looking to score a Smithfield or Edwards country ham for Easter dinner. My preference would be for a smaller one, five to seven pounds, and from a place I can buy it in person. I know there's Calhoun's out in Culpepper, but does anyone know of a local place that sells the hams and has a good selection of sizes? I understand Calhoun's offers its products at the Olde Town farmers market, so I may try that avenue.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Looking for good, simple Chinese in NoVA/MD

All -

I'm looking to head out tonight for a date w/ the wife and we've a hankering for good Chinese. I've plenty of options in NoVA where we live but would like to branch out to Maryland. What's been good lately and worth of the trip across the river? We'll stay local in the Commonwealth too if that's our best bet. I'll also search for past recent threads on the topic but thought to get straight to the point with a new post.

My thanks -

Pasha on W 71 or Epices on W 20 - help me choose

Hello all NYC Hounds -

I'm traveling up from DC for a meeting later this month and have been offered dinner by a friend at either Pasha or Epices. Both look wonderful so it's a tough choice. I'd love some input, advice, and thoughts about which one would be the better choice.

Thanks all -

Birthday dinner in Boca/Boca area - Suggestions for visitors

Hello FL Hounds -

My wife and I will be in Boca for a week later this month, staying at the Boca Resort. We'll be there during her birthday and would like to treat her to a nice dinner in the area. I know the hotel has good, mid/upper priced selections, but I'd rather take her out and away from the hotel.

We're game for anything and are looking for a casual/upscale place with a nice selection of fare. Someplace that offers good Florida seafood is also appreciated.

Many thanks.

Need restaurant suggestion for business lunch - Herdon, Tysons, Reston area

Fellow Hounds -

I'm looking for suggestions of good not too pricey, but not hole in the wall places for a business lunch in mid-March. My companions and I are coming from various parts of VA and MD - Leesburg, Arlington, Frederick - so I thought a place in Herdon, Reston, Tyson's would be more or less convenient for everyone.

We're game for any type of food and to cover myself I've made a reservation at Mon Ami Gabi; it's ok, but I'd like something a bit different.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Good restaurants near Strathmore Hall, Rockville, MD

Can anyone suggest a good restaurant near Strathmore Hall? I'm looking for something quiet for a Friday night prior to a concert. I know Addie's is close by, so that's an option, but I'd like a few more choices.

Thanks!

Brilliant and my thanks. Ate lunch at a place called Wow Bao; found it tasty and cheap.

Tasty eats neat Chicago Sheraton Hotel & Towers - DC hounds seeks advice

Yes, but I don't know Chicago, where I am relative to places possibly suggested, etc, so looking at other postings isn't going to help really. Yes, I do also recognize I asked a broad question; my tastes are broad so I don't care what suggestions are made.

Thanks.
