Birthday for OC girl
What does "fun" mean to her? I've never heard of Dick's. What's your price point? Are there certain types of cuisines or foods she likes in particular?
Where To Buy Raw Peanuts in LA/OC?
I go to the bulk section of the nearest Sprouts Market. They always have them in stock.
Where to find Freeze Dried Corn
This is way far, but there's a Honeyville outlet store in Rancho Cucamonga/Ontario that sells plenty of survivalist items. They also sell their items online via their website, I think.
Best Happy Hour in Orange County
We went to Memphis Cafe in Costa Mesa last night. Late night happy hour starts at 10PM and goes until close. There are drink specials that run between $4 - 6, and food specials that run between $3 - 9. The bartenders were generous and the drinks were very good. The burger was really delish, and so was the fried okra.
Best Happy Hour in Orange County
Any time after 9PM, and cocktails would be great :) Thanks!
Best Happy Hour in Orange County
Wasn't sure whether or not to start a new thread because I have a similar question, but here goes...
My little cousin is graduating this Wednesday, and we'd like to take her out to a late happy hour after dinner with her parents. She lives in Garden Grove, but we're willing to drive anywhere within a 20 min radius for some late night drinks and snacks. I know Lazy Dog offers a late night menu, but I'm not sure if we have options elsewhere.
Thanks!
Moving to Claremont
Some Crust is pretty amazing. They custom made a key lime pie-inspired cake for my husband's birthday. It was pretty amazing.
Vegas May 21-24, trying to decide between restaurants in Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand
Three of us ate at Jaleo for about $100. We were just the right amount of stuffed. Secret pizza is located on the third floor of the Cosmo, where all the restaurants are (Jaleo, Comme Ca, Blue Ribbon). It's between Jaleo and Blue Ribbon in a dark, wood-paneled hallway with framed record covers on the wall. The white pizza with oven roasted tomatoes is amazing and their marinara has just the right amount of spice to make their regular pizzas terrific.
If you are set on a buffet, may I suggest the Wynn buffet or Wicked Spoon? I think the quality is better. And if you time it just right, you can hit the tail end of lunch before hey change the price for dinner. You'll be able taste some of the lunch items before they quickly roll out the dinner items.
If you love pastries and fine sandwiches, you'll love Jean Philippe. I had a prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich on fresh ciabatta, basil, and pesto. They have an amazing selection of made-to-order crepes. The desserts are flat out amazing. We each had to have one...and we shared to taste a bit of everything.
Vegas May 21-24, trying to decide between restaurants in Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand
My cousins and I just returned from a similar trip...we left our husbands and kids at home. I would highly rcommend CP Steak for the Cut of the Week. I love that place for the excellent food and service. Also big on my list if Jaleo. We went for dinner Tuesday night and had a fabulous experience...you have to get anything with jamon Serrano. Inside the Cosmo, is the secret pizza joint...amazingly good for being $3 - $5 for a giant NY-style slice and available until 3 or 4 in he morning if you just happen to be gambling the night away.
We got a car for his trip and this really made things easier as we didn't have to pay cab fare and valet the car everywhere we went at the front of the resorts. We were able to hit a couple of off-Strip places in Chinatown (Ichiza, Raku) for late night dining. Ichiza offers sushi-esque and cooked Japanese tapas while Raku is excellent for cooked/grilled izakaya offerings. We also hit up Jean Philppe Pastisserie at the Aria for breakfast and pastries our last morning there. The only "chain" meal we had was at Gran Lux at the Venetian...which I was opposed to because it's Cheesecake Factory, but my salad and their Sunday Gravy pasta dishes were surprisingly good.
Chocolate Covered Strawberries - West LA? Today or tonight.
This might be a time for the Godiva store if you can't locate another supplier for this request. The make them fresh everyday, and might make yours to order if it's convenient for them. Rocky Mountain Chocolate is another place that could help you out.
Nice dinner in SD
My friend is looking for a great place for dinner in San Diego this weekend. Let's keep the budget to about $50 per person including drinks. She's got a love for Italian food, but is willing and open to try anything that's good.
Thanks!
Meeting relatives in Orange- restaurants nearb y?
I just went to Haven Gastropub last week. Food and service was great. Fun, gourmet-style pub food. Lots of great beers and cocktail, too.
last minute fancy Friday
I had the same problem not too long ago, but I kept trying and figured out that they purposely don't have advanced reservations available. Prior to my dinner date night, I had spent three weeks calling Pizzeria Mozza and checkIng OpenTable for reservations. Each time, I was given options of dining at 5:00PM or 10:30PM...never anything in between. The day of my dinner date, I called again...and was able to get a 7:30PM reservation...and they offered me choices of times between 6:00PM - 9:00PM. Coincidence? I think not...I can't possibly imagine that many people cancelled their dining plans between Thursday afternoon (when I called) and Friday (mid-morning) when I called, again. Just keep trying...I think you just might have some success...but have a back up plan just in case. My back up was Lazy Ox in downtown.
Portos Bakery Cafe Lunch -- Downey Location
You forgot a cheese roll...that's another classic.
Trendy Birthday Dinner...that's foodie, too!
That was my first thought, too. When the expectant cousin reviewed the menu, she thinks there might be so many tastes and flavors that will induce nausea. I'm sad...I think Jaleo would have been perfect.
Sweetbreads on OC menus?
I noticed them on the menu at Haven Gastropub in Orange when I was there Friday night.
Trendy Birthday Dinner...that's foodie, too!
We're headed off to Vegas next week to celebrate my cousin's birthday. She appreciates good food (though in small portions), but is more into the trendy scene. My other cousin is expecting, and has developed an aversion to seafood. I'm the CH of the group, and I like everything that's delicious. We'd like to surprise the birthday girl with a terrific dinner. We're staying at the Cosmo on the Strip, and we're from L.A...so suggestions of Comme Ca and Scarpetta or anything available in L.A. should be ruled out. Let's keep the budget to $80 per person including tax, tip, and drinks. We will have access to a car if there's something off the Strip.
Please help. Thanks.
Friday Dinner near Chapman University
Thanks for all your help! We went to Haven last night after the opera, and while it was a full house, it wasn't too loud or noisy. Service was terrific...our waitress was super attentive and double-checked the kitchen to see if the full dinner menu was still available. We had the duck confit poutine (super yum!), the Haven burger (nice and beefy!), and the pork rillettes (very good). I had an Up In The Sky cocktail, and the beer menu was quite impressive. We would live to come back here.
Friday Dinner near Chapman University
We're seeing a production at the Chapman University theater tomorrow night. Show starts at 7:30PM. We need some suggestions for dinner after the show because there's not enough time for us to eat before the show. I'm not familiar with the area, and searching Chapman University didn't help much. We're open to any cuisines. Let's keep the budget at $50 per person drinks included.
Thanks!
Moving to Claremont
Forgot to include Donut Man in Glendora...most amazing doughnuts in the world. And you'll be arriving in enough time to enjoy the Strawberry donuts and the Peach donuts. It's a drive up down the 210 freeway, but totally worth it.
Moving to Claremont
We moved out of the area recently, but here's some help for you and a list of some of our faves:
1. Sprouts and the farmer's market are really your best options for organic produce.
2. Coffee Klatch really is that great.
3. Coffee Klatch, again. If the weather's great, I would hit up the Cheese Cave for a sandwich and go out to one of the park areas in the Village to study.
4. There are Mexican and Asian markets in Pomona...but I would probably travel to Diamond Bar or Rowland Heights for Asian. There is a Ranch 99 and a Korean market in Rancho...but it's a bit further away from where you are in Claremont.
5. The Cheese Cave is a must.
6. The Back Abbey is the best spot for beer and food. I've heard good things about it's sister restaurant Union on Yale, but I've not been so I can't offer advice.
7. I'm not a huge taco eater, but I can recommend Juanita's (Pomona, Upland, Ontario) for burritos and nachos. They make their tortillas fresh and it feels like someone's grandma made it.
8. Extras....for pizza, San Biagio and Petrilli's in Upland are excellent (but I love San Biagio), Handel's offers the best ice cream in the area (Upland and Rancho), Bert & Rocky's (Claremont) offers some off the wall ice cream flavors, Darvish (Claremont) makes some really great Persian kebabs (lunch special pricing is amazing), breakfast at Kick Back Jack by BC Cafe (Rancho and Claremont) can't be missed because of their blueberry pancakes that taste like flattened blueberry muffins, Claro's Italian Market (Upland) offers some great Italian meats and treats, Old World Deli (Upland) makes some amazing broasted chicken, Pho Mai (Upland) and Pho Ha (Rancho) are great options for Vietnamese, Dragon Inn (Rancho) makes some decent Chinese (but it won't wow you like the stuff you'll find in San Gabriel or OC), good sushi can be found at Kazama (Claremont) and Sho (Upland), and the cupcakes at My Delight in Ontario are really that good...you must go.
Welcome to the area...I hope this list gives you a good CH start.
Vegas recommendations: NEED HELP!
Charlie Palmer Steak at he Four Seasons offers a "Cut of the Week" menu that's 3 courses pre-fixe and includes bottomless wine pairing for just slightly above your range. I loved the service and the food last time I was there.
I would skip Olives as I've heard mixed reviews of it...and I'm not a Todd English fan.
Lunch at Fogo de Chao will meet your budget and ensure that you are thoroughly stuffed for the remainder of the day.
I love Burger Bar inside the Mandalay. Fresh ground burgers, alcoholic milkshakes, foie gras...what more would you need?
I've been told that China Poblana is quite good...and I love Jose Andres' food.
If you're willing to go off-Strip, Raku and Lotus of Siam are James Beard caliber Vegas gems.
Late night eats in Vegas (budget friendly)
My sister is headed off to Vegas this weekend, and she and her friends will be looking for late night budget friendly dining after hitting the clubs. I searched, but could only find one thread that was focused on the Bellagio. They are open to any type of cuisine. They'd like to keep the budget under $20 per person. Locations can be close to the Strip or in North Las Vegas. Last requirement is that it has to be open past 1 or 2 in the morning.
Thanks so much for your help!
Parfaits...can they be assembled ahead of time?
Thanks, all.
I made the parfaits the night before. Added some pastry cream as another layer in addition to layers of whipped cream, strawberries, Nutella, and pound cake. The result was quite nice, and it was the hit of the party.
Parfaits...can they be assembled ahead of time?
I'm making a strawberry shortcake parfaits with Nutella for a potluck. I've never made parfaits before, and am making individual servings for the guests. How far in advanced can I assemble the parfaits? I'll be making fresh whipped cream for the parfaits. Thanks for your help.
Help before I get dragged to the Buffet
Try Sirio at the Aria. I had the tasting menu there last June, and it was great. 5 courses, excellent service, and we had a great time.
Any recs for French macarons in Orange County?
My cousins and I went on a macaron rampage throughout Orange County about a month ago. We went to 7 locations to assess the quality of their macarons:
7 Leaves Teahouse
Tra Teahouse
Chubbi Cakes
Paris in a Cup
Pascal Epicurie
Pat'a Chou
Le Versailles/Au Couer de Paris
I've been meaning to do a post with photos. We tested 61 macarons to assess flavor, texture, and overall quality. Some were winners, some...not so much. But I would urge to you stay away from Chubbi Cakes...those macarons lacked the chewiness and crispness that makes the macaron a perfect cookie. The flavors were just okay. Paris in a Cup had the same problem, but the flavor was far superior.
Different, Entertaining, Odd, Weird Orange County Rec
It would help greatly if you narrowed it down to include a budget, geographical area, or if there are any dietary restrictions. Maybe some ideas on what you mean by "different, entertaining, odd, wierd."
Best place to buy mascarpone in bulk preferably on the east side?
Gioia Cheese in El Monte is my go to for fresh mascarpone cheese in bulk. A 3-4 lb. tub will only set you back $20. Fresh ricotta is available in a 3-4 lb. tub for $6. Fresh mozzarella is available in a 3 lb. tub in different sizes for $12. And you can't walk out without a $6 1 lb. tub of their amazing burrata. The cheeses don't get packaged until you order them in the office...so there's a slight 5 minute wait for your order. It's cash only, so please be prepared.
