Went for lunch yesterday... edamame and a roll made my way... under $10... loved it.
Lunch in Austin
I wholeheartedly recommend Dock & Roll Diner. I had lunch there yesterday and it was, as always, delicious. It was only a little warm as they have umbrellas and trees for the benches. I've never been able to break away from the lobster rolls but the other sandwiches sound really good. The mac and cheese stuffed jalapenos and the standard slaw are great and both of my companions yesterday had the fresh squeezed lemonade and said it may be the best they'd ever had. (the Thai Tea is not to my liking nor either of the other two I've known who've tried it - very different)
The owners are really nice and provide great service...LOVE IT!

What are your current faves in the Round Rock area?
Had lunch today at Krave Wine Bar and Bistro. I love the ambiance and the service was top notch and entertaining without being intrusive.
We had one good and one great sandwich. Their take on the philly cheesesteak was tasty but the rib-eye was chunky rather than thinly sliced, which is my preference, so I would pass next time. The Godfather, on the other hand, was great. Lucky for me that my friend shared. It's a warm sandwich with thin sliced roast beef, Havarti, fried onions, fried egg and a creamy horseradish... really good.
Best food truck in Austin?
Dock and Roll is outstanding and I can't wait for my next visit from the far NW burbs later this week, I also noticed a storefront VERTS opening up at Volente Plaza between Torchys and How Do You Roll.... really looking forward to the new options up north.
parkside - meh?
What might that be, ms1195? Maybe post a reply to the "Best Thing I Ever Ate, Austin" thread.
Meatball subs?
Niki's Pizza and Pasta has a surprisingly good one that seems to fit your description.... I don't know your benchmark, though.
Barbecue Trip Report II (Also Long)
Enjoyed it a lot, Greg! Glad you had such a great time... come back soon for Mueller's and Franklin.
Costco Food Finds - 2nd Quarter 2012
In Austin, I bought the Casual Gourmet Roasted Red Pepper and Spinach Chicken Sausage after a very flavorful sample. I made the recipe for lasagna on the package. I made a few small adjustments and it was a total 10 for the cook tonight.
Thinking of moving from Brooklyn, NY to Austin--what would I be in for, foodwise?
I can let you slide on the pizza and the Chinese (to a certain extent. Afterall, this isn't NYC or SC) but Texas BBQ.... not so much. I'm sure that you know that there are regional differences in BBQ style and preference. To compare central Texas BBQ to Carolina BBQ is not a fair comparison. Beef brisket reigns in Texas and I believe it's pork butt for Carolina's cut of preference. There are different variations on the sauce, as well. I love them all but the main thing they have in common is that they are smoked... using different types of wood, mind you.
St. Paddy's Day
Busy weeks so I haven't given thought to St. Paddy's Day. Are you aware of any special going ons? Would love some corned beef and cabbage... maybe some fish and chips? How about interesting Irish beer or cocktails?
Austin Help: Best - Most entertaining area to stay in downtown?
I'd love to hear more about your visit...
H-town to San Antonio - BBQ? Luling/Lockhart?
We hit City Market in Luling on an extremely good day. We had the moist brisket and sausage... at that moment, it was our winner of the best BBQ ever. I haven't been in about a year and a half and am currently enamored by Franklin in Austin... they do have the pulled pork that you love but the long wait and detour may be tough on the kiddos. I hope to be trying John Mueller's in Austin in the very near future. Finally, another place I've wanted to try that gets good reviews is Two Brothers BBQ in San Antonio... I know I traveled outside the scope of your question, TMI, I just wanted to share.
Is there such a thing as a fine dining chain?
Not too sure about the premise... fine dining for me is gracious service, gracious setting, lovely ambiance and wonderful food. Are we talking about the same thing?
If so, Del Frisco, Morton's, Ruth's Chris, FLEMMING'S, Perry's,.. Maggiano's aspires, tons of regional possibilities here in the southern states.
French Quarter Cafe
Big fan of Stuffed and Noble Pig. I do plan on Stuffed for next Friday but had no idea Noble Pig was doing a fish dish. NICE!
The Fish and Chips at Zed's were very good today and I would gladly recommend... 1st time and really enjoyed.
French Quarter Cafe
Has anyone been lately? I'm looking for good local spots to enjoy my Fish Friday's until Easter... the menu looks great but these posts are pretty old. Trying Zed's today.
Barbecue Trip Report (Long)
I agree about Salt Lick. It's nowhere near the BEST BBQ the area has to offer but it is good. Add the BYOB, live music and location and you have a great place for BBQ.
Raw Oysters
Pacific Star... 183 just north of Anderson Mill. Usually good plus I think they have another location in Round Rock.
Austin Help: Best - Most entertaining area to stay in downtown?
That's exactly where I'd stay for a brief visit.
Coming to Austin for a cow roast on March 4th
Possibly Esther's Follies for the musical/comedy.
Jersey Mike's -- Yays, Nays, and Best Subs
"So, at jersey mike's, their "thing" is to slice the jello loaves in front of the customer"
That's not the case in Austin, TX. They roast their beef in house and have the other meats in a deli case. Frankly, it's the best sandwich you can get within a 5 mile radius of this particular store. The meats are flavorful and the toppings are fresh... the bread's even good.
traditional tex mex enchiladas with raw chopped white onions impossible to find almost in Texas now!!
El Patio in Austin does this well.

Fish Restaurant Name in San Antonio
Are you referring to Sandbar? If so, they have moved to the Pearl Brewery.
Texas Road Trip Report (Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and in between)
GREAT post... even a few places I've yet to try and will. Thanks!
Saturday Afternoon Lunch at Dough
Since we were less than an hour from San Antonio, we decided to make the trek to Dough for a late lunch as we've heard great things about it.
We arrived around 1:00 and were lucky to be seated immediately. Shortly thereafter, I noticed only a seat or two left at the bar. I understand that they have acquired the space next door but right now the place is tiny and cramped with additional seating outside on the sidewalk of the strip center.
First off, the food was very, very good. We started with the burrata caprese which is House-made mozzarella filled with a mascarpone-ricotta-truffle oil filling and heirloom tomatoes. Ours was served with pesto, fresh basil, olive oil and flatbread. I thought it was just OK, a bit bland, until I added a bit of the fresh basil... took it over the top... DELICIOUS.
After that, we ordered the Pizza Napolena Margherita STG: Tomato sauce, mozzarella di bufala, parmigiano reggiano, basil and, prompted by our waiter, we added caramelized onions and roasted mushrooms. It was very delicious and the mostly crispy. slightly charred crust is one of the best I've had. The toppings were fresh and delicious as well.
Hubby had a small carafe of a red wine which he really enjoyed.
Downsides... pretentious service and way overpriced.
Our waiter was not a bad waiter - he was prompt and somewhat pleasant but the canned shpeel and hype he spouted was annoying and very, very pretentious. Clearly when we told him we'd come from Austin just to try the place he had to know that we already knew a bit about the place but he started on and on and on about the recognitions, TV shows, magazine articles, Italian Government certification, rated in top 25 in the whole entire world (exaggerating)... don't call an Italian wine a cabernet... (the wine part was condescending from the waiter and unappealing).
Then the bill... oh the bill... we laughed half the way home. For our strip center lunch of the cheese app, an individual sized pizza that we shared, one iced tea and the glass and a half sized carafe of wine the bill came to $75.... plus 20% standard tip. Yes, the prices were on the menu but still, $3 for iced tea, $3 up charge for the 2 rings (not slices, rings) of onion and another $3 for the equivalent of 2.5 small white button mushrooms...those were surprises.
Will we go again, ABSOLUTELY!!! The food was fresh, creative and very delicious. I'll just tell the waiter to knock of the shpeel and order more carefully.
Birthday weekend coming up, Uchiko suggestions please
Thanks for the follow up... love it!
