Trip report! Xmas in the City

Hello All!

I'd like to share some thoughts about the food I ate this past week in NYC.

Sunday dinner

Keen's: What a great atmosphere! Warm and historic. Had the mutton chop, spinach, and hash browns. Sooooo good.

Monday lunch

Cafe Sabarsky: One of the most beautiful dining rooms in the city. Sad to say my ($30) wiener schniztel was mushy, not crisp, and the breading fell off the meat. Also brought to table suspiciously fast. Linzertorte, though, was absolutely outstanding!

Cocktail

Bemelman's Bar: best martini of the trip! Nice free bar snacks.

Dinner

Waverly Inn: Cozy with an open fireplace. Excellent cocktails and chicken pot pie.

Tuesday lunch

Viand: Upper East Side diner. Didn't know places like this still exist. Had a turkey sandwich and sn egg cream. Saw Ina Garten's Jeffrey there!

Cocktails & Oysters

Mermaid Oyster Bar: $1 oysters, $7 cocktails. Nuff said.

Dinner

Via Brasil: Fabulous feijoada. But restaurant was empty. Tacky music. Probably a lot more fun when full.

Weds lunch

JG Melon: One of my favorite places on earth. Seriously.

Dinner

Odeon: Had the excellent duck. Lots of people having fun. Champagne flowing.

Thursday lunch

The Smile: Got the Salty Dog and the Kale Salad with chicken. Both were outstanding. Other diners apparantly lunching with their literary/ theatrical agents. Felt like Ma Kettle.

Snack

City Bakery: Pretzel croissant and hot chocolate with housemade marshmallow. OMFG

Dinner

Raoul's: Ain't nothin but a party y'all. Outstanding Steak au Poivre. So good! So fun!

Friday lunch

Parm: Friendly, great sandwiches.

Dinner

Wallse: The only bummer of the trip. Silly, pompous waiters and maitre d. Food was bland, not as good as it should have been at those prices. We left before dessert.

Saturday brunch

Barney Greengrass: Sorry, Russ & Daughters got nothing on BGG. Nova melts in the mouth.

That's it. Already plotting my return AND where to eat next time. What did I leave out?

Great bars/restaurants for winter/Christmas?

Going to NYC in December. Can you tell me what bars and restaurants have a great atmosphere for Christmas and great food and cocktails? Perhaps places with a fireplace or are beautifully decorated? I tend to enjoy historic restaurants and bars. I have places in my city (SF) that I try to visit every December. Do you have any in NY? Thanks!

Is Au Bon Saint Pourcain closed?

I asked the hotel where I am staying to make the reservation for me since I couldn't get hold of anyone there. The hotel concierge told me it was closed - didn't elaborate. Is it under construction? On vacation? Sold? Closed for good? Sam920 were you able to make a reservation there? All I get is an endlessly ringing telephone.

Allard?

Booking a restaurant in Paris for my husband's birthday. I love the look of Allard but it is quite expensive. If it is worth it, I am happy to pay. Is it?

Which classic English spot? [London]

Thanks, Zin1953. I read your earlier post and that inspired me to book the Harwood Arms. Inferred from your post you are from SF? Me too. I trust an SF Chowhound with good recos!

Which classic English spot? [London]

Want classic British cuisine with fabulous atmosphere. Should I choose Rules, Simpsons in the Strand, or Harwood Arms? Or is there somewhere else better? Thoughts?

Friday reservation?

Trying to make a reservation for Friday after next (9/6) at a reasonable hour without luck. Any ideas for great places that leave a little room for walk-ins? Anybody know if Island Creek Oyster Bar has counter/tables for walk-ins? Thanks!

Heartland or Bachelor Farmer?

Wow. Thanks Minneapolis Chowhounds. Your passion for food bodes well for city's cuisine. I will most definitely seek out the nut rolls. Please keep any and all suggestions coming! I appreciate your help in making my short stay as culinarily rewarding as possible.

Heartland or Bachelor Farmer?

I am coming from San Francisco, where we are very spoiled for ethnic restaurants (especially Asian). I am looking for something we can't get in SF - Midwestern food!

Heartland or Bachelor Farmer?

I will be in the area for just one night (staying on campus of Macalaster in fact). Two restaurants caught my fancy. Heartland and Bachelor Farmer. Which do you think is better? I am looking for something that is unique to Minnesota and delicious, of course. Opinions?

Odeon or Spotted Pig?

Budget is about 50 - 75$ per person. I will be drinking cocktails/wine. It will be a party of two: my adult daughter and me. We are from San Francisco and are serious foodies. I am looking for a real New York atmosphere. We have many, many great restaurants here in SF, so I am looking for a restaurant that is unique to New York, something with a great atmo and great food! Thanks!

No it doesn't have to be one or the other. You got a better idea?
