Gitana - Bread & Salt

Has anyone been yet? I've been meaning to get out to Cuisine en Locale but it's a bit of a hike for me so I've been dragging my feet waiting to hear how it is.

Daytime Party 35-40 guests, some young children

How exciting! I'm a little confused about what you're looking for - private space for 35? Lots of tables? Is it ok if people are at different tables? How does your price point look?

For some reason, Back Deck is coming to mind - it's an outdoor themed spot with mostly grilled-type food. Though the food isn't anything particularly foodie, it's a unique spot. I'm trying to think of other fun/casual options in downtown Boston - maybe one of the locations of Papagayo. Since you have CBC on there, what about Area 4? Za also has outdoor space nearby.

Nantucket

Unfortunately nothing to report but I'll be following too! Has anyone been to the Grey Lady yet? I saw its intended opening on Eater and now they're on Open Table but can't even find a website.

First trip to Boston

So I haven't done it in a few years and maybe others will chime in, but what I've mostly recently done is dinner somewhere near the Longfellow Bridge/Beacon Hill (Tip Tap Room or Lala Rokh aren't far) and then walked over to the Longfellow Bridge when they closed it. It's now under construction so things might change, but when the roads that they keep open for most of the day close, you can often swoop in. I think we got there about half an hour before the fireworks started and it worked out just fine. It depends on your priorities - some people pick up a picnic and get to the Hatch Shell at 7AM, but that's not what I'd be looking for.

Zagat's top 50

So I don't usually take Zagat's top lists too seriously, but there are a few restaurants on here that I haven't heard of - which makes me wonder whether I'm out of the loop, they're 'hidden' gems, or Zagat's just wrong. Each is equally possible.

Of course, Capital Grille doesn't belong at the top of the list, but some like Cafe Mangal, Chiara Bistro, and Byblos look interesting. Has anyone been to any of those? Are they worth a trip?

Favorites from Watertown Markets?

Definitely check out Sofra! Also my Armenian coworker claims that Eastern Lamejun has the best grape leaves.

Light Lunch in South End

Weekday or weekend? Any target price point? You'll be right near a lot of delicious Chinatown options at the beginning.

I love Mei Mei too!

2 days in Boston with 12-13 yr olds, what eateries not to miss?

I love Salty Pig! For Monday lunch if you're committed to the Fanueil Hall area, I'd go to Hillstone - a chain but probably my favorite one in the area. If you're more flexible, Chacarero and Gene's Flatbread (Chinese) in the Downtown Crossing area aren't too far from the Freedom Trail and on the more inexpensive side.

Hometown favorite dessert... hm. We're 'known' for our Boston Cream Pie, invented at the Omni Parker House, but I don't think it's anything particularly special. I'll think on this.

Popular (and Successful) vs. Good

Do you hate it because you're on the street? I can't stand competitive outdoor seating and then you have people practically driving over your plate - which is how most places in Back Bay are!

Otto's pizza

I've had success when reheating Otto pizza - either a slice in the toaster over or a whole pizza in the oven. Their pizzas aren't really traditional - they shine most with their less traditional offerings. I swear by the mashed potato bacon scallion and I also love the butternut squash ricotta.

Reports on West Side Lounge , City Table in the Lenox, and Boston Chops?

I like Boston Chops - I've only been for dinner, but it was delicious!

Wegman's Faux Pas [Moved from Boston]

What about grapes? I often want less than what can be as much as a $7 bag when things are expensive. I take one out. Not cherry picking, just trying for less when you pay by the pound.

For future reference, Beehive could've been a good option too!

Private group dinner options in or near the Back Bay

It's also worth considering whether small places would do a buyout - Salty Pig isn't huge and does great cheese/charcuterie and is a fun spot. I've done classes at Sur La Table that were maybe 20 people. I don't think they could do much more. Back Bay Social Club also has a nice private space downstairs that could accommodate your group and is nearby.

There's another Chumura's in Palmer, MA. I'm a huge fan of theirs.

Could someone please explain Sip's weird wine pricing?

I agree that the titles on the sizes are weird - "glasses" of wine are very expensive, but a half-glass feels a lot more like a glass to me, too.

December 2014 Openings and Closings

Quick update - Felipe's has a lovely roof deck! Rumor has it their bartender came from Drink, but the upstairs bar and downstairs bar seem pretty different. I wish it could remain a secret forever but alas, you can see it from the street. Great place for an afternoon drink in this weather!

Birthday Dinner

ICOB is fun, for sure! Other popular local spots include Oleana and Sarma (sister restaurants) and Sorrellina if you're looking for something fancier.

Pit Stop Barbecue

While I don't largely put stock in Thrillist, today's email about the best BBQ in Massachusetts being in Mattapan (not Sturbridge) intrigues me.

Has anyone been to Pit Stop Barbecue? Any thoughts?

A little fancy, feels like a good value, veggie friendly?

Baraka doesn't have a special feel to me - I like it, but I almost felt like I was in someone's dining room. Complete with Grandma watching TV in the kitchen.

That's it! Cheese! (The Boston cheese thread)

As an aside, the cheese classes are so fun. I've done a few!

A little fancy, feels like a good value, veggie friendly?

Ditto Alden and Harlow - I honestly think their vegetable dishes are the best things on the menu.

I was going to say TW Food, but the menu's pretty small and I'm not sure you'd be excited about it. Also Oleana and Sarma immediately came to mind for me too, though if you're not up for it I understand.

What do you mean by comfortable, for EVOO? I love their food, though the ambiance isn't the most cozy - it's been better more recently though.

New Restaurant in Cambridgeport - Chew?

I ran by this place yesterday and was pretty confused by it.

http://www.cambridgeday.com/2014/10/0...

Just found that article but nothing more recent. They have the carrot hung up on the building and what seems almost like a two way mirror in all the windows. I got close enough to look in and there were people there and it looks like stuff was happening. At least one person wearing a toque.

Does anyone have updated knowledge? I'm curious!

Trip Planning Help

I'd replace Brasserie Jo on Monday with Met Bar. There was a recent thread about breakfast at BJ that wasn't very complimentary. Met Bar isn't anything out of the world, but I think they have a solid breakfast and it's comparable cost/ambiance. Oak Long Bar also has a [hotel] breakfast.

If you're looking for late night cocktails near your hotel, I'd recommend Lolita, Oak Long Bar, or Tico. Tico and Lolita are more lively. There aren't any destinations within walking distance that I can think of that are particularly known for cocktails, but all of these would be fun.

Of the business lunch caliber, maybe Joe's American or Stephanie's? Neither is anything particularly foodie, but there aren't (to my knowledge) great foodie lunch options in Back Bay unless you want to take a cab.

Suggestions around the Kimpton Nine Zero Hotel

While it's a chain, the Oceannaire is nearby and is a great spot for seafood. It has a nice ambiance, too.

Depending on what you consider nearby, you're not too far from Chinatown or the North End - Boston's Little Italy. Neptune Oyster in the North End doesn't take reservations, but many consider it to be the best for seafood in Boston.
