Relative Chinatown novice - need dinner recs

I'm definitely one of the intimidated - there are some things on menus that may be written in the Roman alphabet, but there's no description and I can't figure out what it means. Googling rarely helps, too -- and sometimes, different places will make the "same thing" differently so I'm not always sure what I'll get. I've found things that generally seem consistent so I always know how to get something I'm sure of if I'm not up for a challenge.

Too bad - it definitely makes my reading experience a lot worse. It'd be great if they were slightly smaller or something even. Oh well. Thank you for your help.

Hey all,

Has anyone had the problem of a CHOW branded photo loading in front of more than half the posts when reading on an RSS aggregator? I love to quickly page through posts but the large pictures taking up space are making it so hard to do that. The pictures are about 1/3 screen height and when they precede a two sentence reply about a restaurant, it's quite frustrating. Thank you!

The best (non-tourist) seafood restaurants in Boston proper, please.

I know it's not quite as foodie as some others, but I recently had a stellar meal at the Oceannaire. Very expensive, but delicious.

Restaurant Week Starts Tonight

We went to Toro once (when they did dinner) and enjoyed it. Others have suggested Mistral and No. 9 Park to me - not sure if they participated this year.

Otto in Coolidge Corner Open

I regularly get slices at their Harvard location and I've never had that problem. Maybe they put them back in the oven for too long? What a disappointment!

I think for your area, Mike and Patty's is your best breakfast option but they don't have much in terms of seating.

Wanted: Authentic German Food!!!

While this is an old thread, I'm happy to add more information about German food to the web! Though not "authentic" per se, Bronwyn has some seriously delicious German-style food that my very German mom and I really enjoyed. Their wursts (homemade) are delicious.

Restaurant Week Starts Tonight

How funny - usually when I walk in, there are at least three people standing at the hostess stand, which I found remarkable in the other direction.

Can It Be?! Is Our Beautiful City Finally Getting a Terrific French Bakery?

I'm personally a big fan of my Paul experiences in Paris, though I know others are split. I did want to share though - I peeked in the window about two weeks ago and it looked like they'd made almost no progress at all. I'd be shocked if they pulled off their "Summer 2014" opening.

Late lunch options near Coolidge Corner (Today)?

This may not be quite what you're looking for, but I love OTTO! Right in Coolidge Corner.

$1000 mandatory minimum bill for a large group?

We're you asking for a private room or just reserved space? I haven't had that problem when planning similar things on weekday evenings. Maybe try Back Bay Social Club? I was recently at an event there that I don't think had a minimum.

How do I replace Hamersley's as my "go to" special occasion restaurant? (Very detailed list of criteria inside!)

What about Mamma Maria?

How do I replace Hamersley's as my "go to" special occasion restaurant? (Very detailed list of criteria inside!)

I never went to the old L'Espalier, but if the defining characteristic was townhouse, could Mamma Maria be similar?

I haven't been, but Cuchi Cuchi might fit that bill. Otherwise, Matt H makes great recommendations below.

Bar & food in Cambridge/Boston?

I haven't been to Alden and Harlow so maybe I'm missing the reference, but are you looking for a bar that has food or a restaurant where you can sit at the bar? Any particular price point or type of food?

If you're looking for a place without TV's, there a thread for that on here.

Omnivore and vegetarian, excited to get time in/around Boston: seeking recs

One other place that could be worth trying is Orinoco - there are locations in the South End, Brookline Village, and Harvard Square. I had a great meal there for about $35 a person including a carafe of sangria. The Harvard Square location has a wonderful outdoor patio in the back that I would highly recommend. Our meal, though it included meat, could easily and deliciously have been vegetarian.

Do you have any preferences on price or location? Oleana and Sarma immediately come to mind. Also an entirely different option - Life Alive has great vegetarian food that made me not even miss meat!

Romantic dinner between backbay and the theatre district

I'd definitely suggest Erbaluce. They generally have simple meats and pasta dishes on the menu (my boyfriend isn't an adventurous eater either) but I've always found delicious options as well. Very convenient, too.

Good restaurants in/around Natick?

While it may not be hip, I think John Harvard's fits some of your criteria. May technically be in Framingham but it's near the mall.

King Street Tavern

I haven't seen anything on the King Street Tavern (replacing the Woodward at the Ames Hotel) so thought I'd share my experience from last night.

Their menu is quite simple - they have a long list of proteins (steak, salmon, burger, pork chop, shrimp, veggie burger, etc.) that can be ordered a la carte and come with truffle fries ranging from $17-$50 or so. For an additional $6 per person, you can get the prix fixe option, which includes an additional three (!) courses. The first course is a bruschetta, second a choice between lentil or portobello soup, and third a simple salad. My DC ordered a medium rare ribeye ($47 + $6) and I ordered salmon ($26+$6). His ribeye was closer to medium well but still tender and tasty so he wasn't too upset, and my salmon was great. Though the menu promised complimentary biscotti, there was none to be had nor were there any other dessert options. He had two cocktails and I had one - good but unremarkable, ranging between $12-$15. The bill came to about $120 before tip.

Our experience was interesting. The tables were well spaced (important to me!) and quite comfortable. There was a DJ (we arrived around 6:30) the whole time, and the music was a little too loud for my liking. The bruschetta and salad were both served on large plates to share, which didn't bother us but seemed like an interesting assumption.

In all, I probably wouldn't go back soon - more due to the price than anything else. For the same price, we could have a full meal (including dessert!) at most other places nearby, with more menu options and without the loud music. However, the food was good and it's definitely a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
