THRIFTY ICE CREAM (still kickin' at RITE AID)

Mint n Chip. Cylindrical scoops forever!

Hottest of the Hot? Spiciest of the Spicest? Recs please!

The Torta Ahogada at Mota's Mexican Food in Altadena is pretty darn fiery. Great little neighborhood restaurant we used to go to for lunch all the time when we worked out there.

Need beautiful unique lunch spot for special BD

Sunday Brunch at Saddlepeak Lodge. As good as it gets.

Where to eat Labor Day early evening in Santa Monica, Venice, etc.

I'm a fan of blue plate oysterette, especially the thai mussels.

Where to "wow" a visitor with "do NOT miss this place" recommendations

Sent friend visiting from NYC to Elite last week for dim sum and she couldn't believe how great it was.

BP Oysterette - very disappointed

Their red curry mussels may be my favorite food in Santa Monica. I agree their ceviche isn't my fave.

Sherman Oaks dining 'renaissance' - will it draw Angelenos?

dress code at Local Peasant? That is not a thing I have experienced.

Sherman Oaks dining 'renaissance' - will it draw Angelenos?

That 405 is just tough. Laurel Tavern overcomes, though that's a little further afield. Definitely enough people in Sherman Oaks/Encino/Van Nuys/Studio City area to support good food even without westsiders, though.

Nice restaurant in LA for thursday date night

Tsujita has started doing ramen and tsukemen at dinner, so that might be worth a look if you're not too worried about eating noodle soup on the date.

Nice restaurant in LA for thursday date night

I'm a big fan of Plan Check, specifically the chicken sandwich (spicy or no) and the kale caesar.

Malibu in the Mornings

A little out into the canyons, but brunch at Saddle Peak Lodge could be the best I've ever had in Southern California. Certainly the best baked goods.

Van Nuys lunch

Not far from Pho So 1 and Pho 999, just north of Victory and Sepulveda.

Huh. if I'm not mistaken that's like across the street from one of the few Krispy Kremes left in the area.

Bootleg Theatre, Los Angeles

I'd add Mohawk Bend (though I've always been impressed with Bootleg's beer selection).

Unfortunately I think the trompa at El Flamin Taco is no longer there but that used to be my go-to.

The Pastrami List 2014

I've had it plenty of times and it is absolutely fantastic (though very much a completely different experience from a deli pastrami--much smokier and fattier).

Hidden gem south of the border restaurant

Went for lunch the other day. You really can't miss it; there are huge plumes of delicious smelling smoke billowing from their outdoor grill at all times. Once indoors, there are actually two different counters, one where you order things from the grill and special drinks and one where you order sandwiches/stews/everything else not grilled. It really does give the idea of pan-latin american cuisine--there are pictures from countries all over central and south america (along with a curious picture of Uganda). We had the chicken sandwich and the cuban, as well as a side of tostones (wanted to get an order of papas rellenas but they were out). I'd say the winner was the chicken sandwich--the meat was clearly freshly grilled and had that great charred flavor. The Cuban was perfectly tasty. I thought the tostones were a wee bit overdone, though they went well with the tomatillo salsa that came with everything.

If I go back, I'm definitely trying something from the grill.

HAPPY HOUR SPOT NEAR SKIRBALL CENTER FOR 40

Mulholland to Ventura is literally one exit, so probably not more than 20-25 minutes that way and it's a reverse commute leaving the valley. I'm a big fan of Blue Dog and think it is VASTLY superior to everything in Westwood and most in West LA, especially if you get happy hour pricing. It won't be a private area, but with 40 people you'll be the dominant group for sure.

If the westside is a must, the triumvirate of Q's/Bruhaus/Cabo Cantina are all enormous and could easily take in 40 people, though you have to deal with Wilshire in rush hour and they are much frattier in vibe. There is also Bar Food, which is a little more relaxed (and has free hot dogs!), or Barney's Beanery in Westwood, which is similar to Q's and I believe has an upstairs that can be rented out.

"Chef" The Film & It's Food

I thought it was pretty straighforward that hero is heroic because he overcame the inertia of his safe job that was keeping him from both fulfilling his potential and having a family life to reinvent himself and live a more satisfying life. It wasn't an all-timer, but I thought it was a cute movie that would be especially good for a date (especially if you have dinner lined up after!).

Plus I feel like it's a no-brainer that it would be popular on this board--from the Red Medicine style freakout at the food critic to the nighttime shots of Abbot Kinney, if this movie was made for anybody it was made for the Chowhound LA board.. Probably over half of the posts are dedicated to restaurants that do a few things really really well but didn't invent them. Mariscos Jalisco didn't invent the fried shrimp taco, Krua Thai didn't invent Pad Thai, and Bludso's didn't invent barbecue--they all just make really delicious food like the Jefe character does.

Biggest and best in the Valley

I believe Smoke City Market has had an "Are You Texas Enough" challenge in the past about eating an ungodly amount of barbecue. Can't find anything about it on their website now.
