first time in LA!!! give me your top 5.

Delicious stuff that will be really different from Nashville that is closeish to silverlake:

1. Mariscos Jalisco
2. Guisados
3. Night + Market Song
4. So Kong Dong OR Beverly Soon Tofu (there are am absolute ton of great korean places with different specialties that you can find through a quick site search)
5. Kogi

All of these are pretty cheap (Night Market Song maybe a bit more expensive depending on what you get).

Also if you feel like moving here and starting a Hot Chicken place we won't stop you!

What's the most unique and upscale Iranian/Persian food in LA?

Saffron and Rose has plenty of non-rose-flavored deliciousness too :)

Anniversary dinner: Osteria Mozza or A.O.C.?

You can't go wrong with either one, but AOC's patio on a warm night is one of the prettiest dinner settings in LA.

Dessert after Night + Market -- WeHo

Late on this, but the ice cream sandwich at Night + Market is pretty fantastic if you don't need to go elsewhere.

4 days in Santa Monica with teen

You're probably fine staying around SaMo with Uber/Lyft, though you don't get the joy of driving up PCH yourself.

Lot of good ideas already in this thread--I would add the Kogi Truck http://kogibbq.com/

Thai Cole Slaw

I really like the "green apple slaw" Sri Siam serves alongside its fried fish. Maybe you can call and ask them to sell you a couple pounds a la carte?

Fried Empanadas in Valley Area ?

I've had both baked and fried at Mercado Buenos Aires, though I don't remember which filling is which.

Need a great recommendation for dinner for 1.

Eating at the bar at Little Sister (Manhattan Beach, across the street from MB Post and Fishing With Dynamite, two other great options for 1) is fun. It is ostensibly Vietnamese/SE Asian, but it has a very "LA" sensibility about it.

Man do I miss dipping into the Glatt Mart for some baked goods after taking some random LAUSD graduation requirement class at LAVC. Will check out Pepper soon.

Lemonade replacing Clusi Batusi

Agreed, we definitely miss it, plus there's another westside Lemonade like a 10 minute drive away. Oh well.

Tacoteca--Good, Irritating, and Overpriced

Went this past week for a late dinner (10ish, the kitchen closes at 11), sorry no pictures. Got the duck tamale (moist and well-seasoned with good portion of duck--maybe they heard bg90027's review?), scallop crudito (very tasty and gone almost immediately) and smokey guacamole (fine but not particularly memorable) to start. For tacos, we got the octopus (good texture but not quite as flavorful as I would have liked), carne asada (absolutely fantastic and possibly my favorite thing there), grilled chicken (also very good), and barbacoa. Everything generally tasted fresh and well-executed.

To drink, had the La Bruxa (ok but not a standout) and the Oaxacking (fantastic depth of flavor, one of my favorite drinks on the westside!)

I enjoyed it and lord knows SaMo needs as many good Mexican places as it can get no matter the price range. I do kind of hope they'd consider a limited menu for late night on the weekends, but being able to eat up until 11 pm is nothing to sneeze at.

Farmers Ranch Market Closed

Just learned that my favorite place in the valley to buy produce has closed. Anybody have any recommendations for a replacement in the Van Nuys/Valley Glen/Sherman Oaks area? Currently making do with Farm Boy, Ranch 99, and Vallarta.

LA Hound coming for birthday

Any thoughts on good places for largeish group (10-15) for a birthday dinner? Main things are non-pork (sigh), maybe $40-50 pp (though cheaper is fine too), and preferably closeish to downtown (staying at the W Downtown on Washington Street). Been perusing the board and I've been intrigued NoMad, Toqueville, and Casa Mono. Any further ideas?

+1 on Mom's. Fan of the fried fish too.

Best Mexican in Sherman Oaks?

Big group might be tougher as most of the best places aren't particularly large. La Fogata could work

Tacoteca--Good, Irritating, and Overpriced

RFT is also halfway across the city and not a sit down restaurant. The better comparison would be the (also ~half the price) tacos at Tacos Punta Cabras down the street, but even that is much more of a fast-casual feel. The sense I'm getting is that tacoteca will try to be an actual swanky date night ambience place, so comparing it to neighborhood spots (which are relatively sparse in that area anyway) and trucks is a ludicrous as comparing Park's to Kogi.

Tacoteca--Good, Irritating, and Overpriced

People seem to like Guerilla Tacos, which isn't much cheaper and doesn't give you a sitdown experience, and Mercado is in that price range as well. As someone in Santa Monica a lot, I'm definitely gonna try it.

Bye Bye Zengo. Hello Cheescake Factory?

Went there just the other day for brunch. Friend's steak and eggs was fantastic, girlfriend's Kaiserschmarrn was very good, and my frittata was overcooked and underseasoned. Quelle dommage. Oh and the belini was tasty. $35 for all you can drink brunch + one food item seemed pretty popular on a sunny weekend morning.

Asada Tacos and Rolled Tacos in San Fernando Valley

San Marcos (Oxnard/Hazeltine) is fantastic, just make sure you ask for the handmade tortillas. Also their cabeza costs the same as the asada, so I tend to lean in that direction (along with the suadero).

Also, you can buy tacos at Vallarta (can't say I've every actually done so, but I love grilling their marinated asada myself).
