No help for dinner, but for a great breakfast of cafe au lait and french pastries you can't go wrong at Jean Paul's Goodies

Dessert at Panzanella

Had dinner tonight during which the appetizers and entrees were varying levels of solid to awesome, but WOW ordered this brown butter tort and it was the best dessert I've had in months! Don't remember the exact name and it's not showing up on the website's menu, but it was just the perfect amount of sweet crumbly goodness. Highly recommend.

Carnitas el Momo

Had them for the first time at Taco Madness at grand park today. The mixed (forget the actual name for them) carnitas tacos was absolutely incredible. Enormous copper vat out back stirred by somethign the size of an oar. Fantastic flavors and texture. I will be back.

ROC, finally went....

Just went for the first time this past weekend. I actually really enjoyed it. We had the XLB (just ok), 3 cup chicken (fantastic), string beans (probably my favorite string beans of all time), scallion pancake (pretty solid; not the best I've ever had but still tasty), pan fried dumplings (good), and dungeness crab fried rice with brown rice (tasty). Service was friendly and fast.

Fatal Attraction

Huckleberry on a weekend morning. Long line, way expensive for brunch, and boy was my duck hash disappointing last time I went. But I'll be back--man cannot subsist on the lox sandwich from Bagel Nosh alone.

AOC & Tavern

Had birthday dinners at the Goin duo of AOC and Tavern this past week (maybe next year for Lucques). A few thoughts:

-AOC doesn't get nearly enough love as a vegetarian-friendly restaurant. I lean towards the carnivorous end of things, yet in the two times I have been to AOC I've absolutely loved every meat-free dish I've tried. My clear favorites are the farro and the pappardelle, but every vegetarian dish in the place absolutely wows me. I know where I'm taking vegetarian mom for her next birthday.

-Both dining areas are gorgeous in different ways. The outdoor patio at AOC is probably a little more buzzy and "LA" while Tavern's tree atrium (or whatever they call it) is a little more neighborhoody. The conversations at nearby tables at AOC were about plastic surgery, while the ones at the nearby tables at Tavern were about law school.

-The Devil's Chicken at Tavern is still fantastic. For whatever reason, I have a bias against ordering chicken when I go out (probably because making delicious baked chicken on my own is so simple but I digress), but wow was that delicious. The texture and taste make it a joy to eat, and the braised leeks were good too.

-The lamb shank at Tavern is hearty and delicious, though I wish it came with a little more labneh.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself at each place.

Fine Dining in the Valley

In Sherman Oaks I'm a big fan of Oliva. Mmmm gnocchi al brasato (brisket meat sauce) and linguine vongole

LA dinner recs

Speaking of ramen, pretty sure there is nothing like the LA ramen places in Tallahassee. Delicious and (relatively) cheap! Completely unrelated to Cup o Noodles.

My favorite that is (relatively) close to SC is Men Oh http://www.menohusa.com/home/ but a cursory search of this board should give you a TON of options.

Also, if you don't already have parking passes, highly recommend taking public transit to the stadium on gameday. Take the train to Union Station, then take the Gold Line to Pasadena, then take the free bus from the Parsons Lot. Will save you $$$ and headache.

HELP requested - NY hound in for a long weekend, group dinners to plan!

I think the tacomiendo cabeza taco is better than anything TPC makes, though I like the TPC fish taco better than the tacomiendo version. Tacos Por Favor is solid, but i don't think it's quite on the same level. Leo definitely gets you that quintessential LA experience with the trompa in a gas station and it's delicious, if a one-trick pony. Never been to Anaya.

Lunch Near Van Nuys Courthouse

Adding on, I like the regular fish ceviche at Puro Sabor better than the mixto, though several of my friends disagree with me. The lomo saltado there is also delicious, and they actually also have a bunch of Chinese-Peruvian dishes that I've yet to try but will get to one of these days. I agree with Jwsel that Pho So 1 (next to 99 Ranch) is slightly better than Pho 999 across the street, but your mileage may vary. The bun bo hue is better at 999. If price is an issue, the Pho places are the cheapest of the options listed so far.

I do love Smoke City, and if you're willing to go that far from the courthouse then maybe also check out San Marcos Mexican Grill on Hazeltine just south of Oxnard, Nat's Early Bite on Hazeltine and Burbank for diner food, and Star Falafel kitty corner to Nat's. All are very good--probably a 5 minute drive from the courthouse.

You're a New Yorker coming to Los Angeles. You want tacos. Closeish to Venice: Tacomiendo on Pico/Gateway. Kogi truck is in Venice on Abbot Kinney on Saturday afternoons. A perennial fave: Guisados either in Boyle Heights or Echo Park.

Another +1 here for Al-Amir. Fantastic little joint with friendly service and tasty food. I know it wasn't the original question, but it's got the best damn lentil soup I've had.

Help a Boston Hound out- birthday dinner recs?

Joking aside, transportation is of course an issue in LA. Koreatown does have a stop on the LA subway line (which exists!), which will take you downtown or to Hollywood (it will also take you to North Hollywood, but not quite close enough to the wonderful Thai places out there).
