Moving to the Valley, what's good?- Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys

For a good sandwich, try a Bobbie from Capriotti's in Encino

REVIEW w/pics: The Downs, Ups and Sideways of My Cambodian Dining Journey

point taken. Interestingly though none of the food I had there seemed very complex or developed.... well made, but simple...perhaps just a different set of experiences.

REVIEW w/pics: The Downs, Ups and Sideways of My Cambodian Dining Journey

Having recently spent time in Cambodia. ..i can say that i agree with your assessment. There are not a lot of bright, bold flavors or vegetables. There is a common flavor profile of sweet & spicy that runs through their cusine no matter where you eat, tho there does not seem to be any one way of making a dish. There are some dishes that i had maybe three or four times in both homes and in restaurants. ...each time they were decidedly different in flavor and in texture. I cannot say that I loved the cuisine however it is not necessarily a food based culture like you may find in Vietnam or Singapore. Sometimes food felt like an afterthought. A neccescity verses something pleasurable. I can say that the food was good and certainly some things were better than others however there is nothing that really stuck with me. I will be back in Cambodia again and will focus more on food than I did last time...perhaps as you get into regions closer to Thailand or Vietnam you begin to see more of that influence. Fish seems to be the main protein with most of it being fish from the river. There is a good amount of chicken available but not much in the way of beef or pork other than the occasional ground item. many of the dipping sauces were very subtlety flavored and tasty.. The Khmer are an amazing people who have been through unspeakable horrors in recent history. They are stuggling to find and preserve their culture at the same time modernize their country. Perhaps it is just the time for the cuisine yet.maybe a younger generation will find it and develop it. Its intriguing..

Moving to Studio City

you can try Joe Peeps for pizza... Casa Vega for Mexican Harvest Moon Cafe on Magnolia is a pretty good cssual lunch spot senor freds for Mexican...Lidos pizza in van nuys is fairly good...there's a ton of good Thai food in the North Hollywood area which is very close. for a steakhouse I would try arnie mortons in Burbank...loteria grill is good as is the artisian cheese shop right across the street great selection of cheeses and good sandwiches. you're also very close to Hollywood so you'll find plenty of options there as well

Yummy east coast foods you can't get in LA area

if Dunkin Donuts has a drive thru ....they will be a hit. That and price point is what gives McDonalds any leverage on Starbucks. (for the record I really don't like McDonalds or Starbucks coffee but it is what it is)

Buenos Aires Grill Northridge

I eat here once a month or so and have for years. Fantastic steaks and empanadas and good wine...service is hit or miss but the prices and food quality are outstanding.

Concert in Northridge Tonite - I'm unable to choose? Lum-ka-naad Thai Restaurant or Jose Antonio Peruvian & Chinese Cuisine, or something else chowie-wowie?

Try Buenos Aries Grill for steaks, Mandarin Deli for chinese, Brents for..well everything..or the Yard House if you need a varied menu

Amazing Thai in Chatsworth

I ate here for lunch today. I agree that the food was very good..but my service at least was very good unlike that of some of the reviews I have read. I will agree that the vibe is odd....seemed that the servers/bartenders (who all seem to have Louis Viutton bags..ipad cases etc..sitting in the bar and were dressed in skimpy clothes..) were particularly attentive to a handful of older guys at the far side of the bar..at one point even dancing for them and ggiggling. The place is equal parts bar and restaurant but the. food is of serious quality. I had satay with a great cucumber and jalapeno salad...tiger cry steak. ..pad thai and some crab and papaya salad. My bill with drink was about $40

LA Magazine...Ultimate Sushi Guide...thoughts?

Oops..Yeah I missed them on the list. I didn't realize that the grade of celebrities dining there was a determining factor...lol...I've had some great sushi at Matsuhisa over the last two years..tho I can't speak to how it was or wasnt in the 90's...maybe i got lucky...I agree that Shunji isn't a Sushi restaurant per se...tho their sushi is excellent.
