Rosie's Tamale House- Are you kidding me?

Breakfast- austin texas

Juan in a Million is close to downtown and has a nice little house that would probably work for your group.

Roadtrip between Austin and Shreveport on Hwy 79

Here are a couple of pix of our most recent visit to Herby K's so you can judge for yourself. It would not be fair to not say that there have been several very sad incidents but during daylight (which lasts til probably 8:30), you're fine. (And as you probably guessed, we're the two old geezers in the red Vette).

Roadtrip between Austin and Shreveport on Hwy 79

Your message suggests Shreveport may be your destination so this may not work but my favorite is Herby K's ("Since 1936") in Shreveport, featured in Southern Living etc. Absolutely fabulous!

Gas prices effect dining expectations

The Blanco Bowling Club is one of the old-time German bowling clubs, like the bowling club at Saengerrunde Hall at Scholz Garten, established in the 1800's. The Blanco Bowling Club Cafe (I always seem to inadvertently omit "Cafe" when that's what I really mean) is an authentic small-town cafe with great breakfasts (the largest cinnamon rolls you ever saw for $.60!), biscuits and gravy (choice of plain or sausage), terrific plate lunches and lots of other yummy food including pies that are much better IMHO than BlueBonnet Cafe and $.50/slice cheaper.

This coming weekend is probably not the time to try it as I imagine LOTS of bikers attending the Republic of Texas Rally here in Austin will be riding out there (as I did when I rode) but it's open 7 days a week from early breakfast through dinner (or supper, whatever you call it).

Gas prices effect dining expectations

Yes indeed! For years I've enjoyed a country breakfast at the Blanco Bowling Club or lunch at Cooper's but the former now carries a $20 "cover charge" and the latter $30 with premium gas so both have sadly become rare events.

Good Soup in Austin?

We enthusiastically endorse the concept and the product at the Soup Peddler. David and all his folks are wonderful, week after week, season after season.

#1 - The return of Mother's. #2 - Juan in a Million - The name says it all. #3 - Flip Happy Crepes (the people are as beautiful as the crepes). John

Buster's BBQ: For Sale???

Which place? The VFW Hall (new location) or the old one on 620?

Covered patios?

Juan in a Million, 2300 E Cesar Chavez - Nice covered patio, great variety of music, heavy plastic walls and space heaters for those cold days, open 7 days from 7am-3pm, probably not dog-friendly as only entrance is through restaurant but call 472-3872 and ask.

Austin - Hoover's and Threadgill's - still good?

I'll add my two cents on the Stallion after lunch there yesterday. Features were smoked chicken (half chicken) and homemade meatloaf with two sides and roll/cornbread for $6.99. Lots of folks chowing down at noon and didn't see a frown in the bunch. I had smoked chicken, cabbage, turnip greens and cornbread. The chicken and cabbage were both "A" and the turnip greens were THE BEST I've ever had (and have had a LOT of greens).

Willie's IS great (but I believe the address is 4505 rather than 4305).

Good biscuits and gravy

scrumptiouschef said it as well as I could. Lawrence Baker - one of the current owners and a long, long time Austin restaurant fixture (and like Hoover Alexander, another man who got his first shot at the restaurant biz through Harry Akin) - sees that the biscuits are as good as his self-named "Lawrence's Gravy" and for my $$, they're as good as it gets. Sadly scrumptiouschef is also right that Walgreens is set to do next year to The Frisco Shop what it tried to do to Maria's Taco Xpress on South Lamar a couple of years ago. Hopefully there may be some way the 54 year history of the Frisco can survive and prosper as did Maria.

Tex-Mex on Austin’s Southeast and East Sides, Part 2

As a guy who can invariably be found eating breakfast on the East Side, I agree with all the Kudos. But I guess I'm just too old (or the salsa is getting to me after all these years); what's "WM2HILT+S"? John
