If you have any friends who are members at the Park Slope Food Coop, not only is their farro whole, but it's organic, grown in NY, and cheap.

Rhubarb-Braised Chicken Thighs

Made this last night, exactly per the recipe, and it was absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't change a thing and would like to eat it every night for the next week. Served over plain steamed white rice.

Franny's, I'm over it

Well, here are two more cents for the pot: I hadn't really followed all the hype about Franny's, although I'd of course seen it mentioned here and there. Was not too excited about some snotty pretentious pizza joint, which is what my first impression was, but boyfriend suggested going one night and I figured what the heck.

We had an excellent meal, basically flawless. The scene was a bit much for me, but I'm a total homebody most of the time so there was an element of fun to it. I balked at the price of the "rose petal martini" I ordered, but it was the best cocktail I've ever gotten at a restaurant, by far. Soppressata was great (duh--how does one go wrong?), bean crostini completely exceeded my expectations, and the bitter greens salad with creamy citrus sauce was inventive and delicious. The pizza was very good, no complaints, but the least exciting item of the evening (we had pizza with anchovies and chile). Wine and espresso were fantastic.

After so many lukewarm restaurant experiences of late, I was very happy with my Franny's experience. I can't imagine going there once a week (budget! scene! variety!), but I'll be happy to go back.

OMG!! Taku closed for good

I'm designing & printing the wedding invitation of one of the owners right now, and he mumbled something over the phone to me yesterday about relocating Taku to Manhattan?? and opening a Mediterranean place in its location??. I didn't totally follow what he was saying, but there does seem to be some serious overhaulin' in the works.

Zum Schneider for Tuesday's semifinal--HELP!

If anyone is planning to head over to Zum Schneider today at 5 to buy tickets for the Germany-Italy game on Tuesday, and is only planning to buy a ticket or two, would that person be willing to consider buying two tickets for myself and my boyfriend?

I know it seems irresponsible & ill-planned that we can't be there to buy them ourselves, but we're moving from Long Island to Brooklyn on Monday and there's no way we can make it to Manhattan this weekend (and no way we'll have cable TV by Tuesday to watch at home). We are very conscientious kids & will be happy to send money via PayPal or simply exchange money for tickets outside the bar. And buy you a beer.

Will be happy to attempt to return the favor if possible.

Silpat Baking Mat

Hate them. I tried making sponge-cake ladyfingers on one, and got a shiny, rubbery bottom on all of my cookies. Perhaps if the cookies are supposed to be homogeneous in texture, it might work. Parchment works just great.

Your Regulars - Winter and Summer?

This is my first year homebrewing, and I find it's really expanded my horizons in terms of learning about simple, refreshing English and German beers. Right now for summer I'm enjoying English-style bitters, Munich Helles lagers, saison, and K├Âlsch. (Also about to try making an American-style honey ginger lager, but who knows...) In winter I like Dunkelweizen, stout and brown ale.

Help me break free from Pilsner Urquell

If you're able to find Ayinger Jahrhundertsbier, it's a Munich light lager, not a Czech Pils, but I've found it a deliciously drinkable summer discovery. It's light with subtle flavors, not skunky like so many green-bottled European lagers. Now if only I could find it by the case...
