El Pollo Regio and/or Best Mexican Chicken

Curious... what kind of chicken are you talking about? Mexican BBQ chicken? Chicken smothered in mole poblano? Chicken enchiladas?

A few restaurants I have chosen for San Antonio. Please help.

I'd skip Mi Tierra for lunch and instead go to Cascabel's Mexican Patio down in Southtown. Their cochinita pibil is outstanding and their refried black beans are among the most flavorful beans I have ever eaten. Their mole poblano is too nutty, but the fideo soup they serve before every meal is spectacularly good, and I also really like the nopales salad served with every meal. Outstanding corn tortillas too, and you can get huitlacoche there also. Their aguas frescas are great too, but no beer nor liquor.

Mi Tierra is good if you want somewhere to eat out at midnight or 3AM, or if you want Tex-Mex and margaritas (delicious beef fajitas there).

If you end up at Harmons on your Natural Bridge day, their chicken is outstanding. Their brisket just sucks though. Get your brisket fill on your Lockhart day, since that's where they know how to make it properly.

What's your Blue Bell flavor?

I wish they did a coconut ice cream still. Really sweet coconut ice cream with fresh lime juice squeezed on top is out of this world. It's the only ice cream I could really stand when I lived in California and didn't have access to Blue Bell (Dreyers and Ben & Jerry's are no comparison whatsoever).

What's your Blue Bell flavor?

Favorite flavor is Southern Blackberry Cobbler, which sadly, is seasonal. At least my #2, Rocky Mountain Road, is year-round; the marshmallow swirl in that is amazing, and makes it much better than the old school Rocky Road (which they still make too). Surprised to read about Butter Pecan being short, as it's all over San Antonio (though I strongly prefer the Pecan Praline to Butter Pecan). Natural Vanilla Bean is my #3, though Homemade Vanilla and French Vanilla are both outstanding too.

I'm always tempted to try the pistachio since pistachios are about my favorite snack in the world, but I can't see enjoying a salty ice cream.

Best place in San Antonio to buy Mexican ingredients?

I'll definitely have to give La Michoacana a look though.

Best place in San Antonio to buy Mexican ingredients?

Thanks HollyDolly. HEB and Culebra only carry ancho, guajillo/cascabel, and arbol in bulk and HEB doesn't carry mulato period (though they have pasilla in Fiesta bags). Not too bad since those three are usually my gotos: e.g., ancho for making chile powder when I want to BBQ chicken, ancho+guajillo for red pozole, arbol when I want to make a nice salsa for carnitas, etc., but I'd like to make mole poblano without it costing me un ojo de la cara (especially since there is literally no place in town that makes it very well).

Where should I stop for BBQ between San Antonio and Austin?

Smitty's and Black's have my favorite brisket; it's a coin flip to me. However, I'd also drive 10 miles or so down 183 to City Market down in Luling for their sausage; it's the best sausage (by far!) I have ever had.

Mexican in San Antonio

Haha, barbacoa and Big Red is about as San Antonio as you can get. Great suggestion there.

I have paying $2.59 for little 3oz bags of chiles mulatos and similar for pasillas; it seems like the act of bagging something makes it expensive. Do you guys know of any places to get the following from the produce aisle? (so I'm not paying some markup just for a Fiesta logo and plastic bag)
- chiles mulatos
- chiles pasillas
- pepitas
- epazote

Also, anywhere to get fresh huitlacoche?

Thanks

Places that we have to try during our 3 day stay in SA?

Oh man, don't go to Rosario's when Cascabel (like a block and a half away) is far far superior (get there by 3PM though). Awesome cochinita pibil and their fideo soup served as an appetizer with all their meals is amazing. Love their nopales salad and black beans that come on every plate too.
