Trader Joes... Please, just ring up my groceries.

Sounds normal to me, at least in Nevada. They usually comment on something I've bought, if they've tried it, or ask me about my day. I look forward to chatting with the TJ's clerks so that if it happens I go in and they aren't chatty, I feel out of sorts afterwards.

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - April 2013 [OLD]

UMMM?: The April spotlight cheese in my Trader Joe's is Trader Jacque's Pont L'Eveque, a mild, washed rind cheese with warm, buttery, savory flavors and a creamy texture.

I only recently started trying TJ's wine & cheese pairings because, you know, drinking wine in a grocery store in the middle of the day makes me question too much about myself. But when I tried the coastal reserve merlot ($4.99 a bottle) with the December Cinco Lanzas cheese, I was hooked. I loved that cheese. The iberico is similar, but not the same!

This cheese looks like a crusty, aging square piece of something or other--tempeh, maybe, but felt squishy to the touch. I had to try it! Even though it was a soft cheese and I figured it would be like brie or some such thing, the "buttery flavor" description won me over. Plus I like gross things.

I unwrapped it, and the smell was terrible. I'm not a cheese connoisseur, I don't even know how to spell connoisseur. It was like an old person's bad breath. Namely like my mother's bad breath. I don't know what was going on with that woman, rest her soul, but her morning breath could kill you. This cheese not-so-fondly reminded me of her--and maybe a little of my own morning breath sometimes, which I can taste, and which sends me running to the sink to brush my tongue thoroughly.

That wasn't actually my first thought though. My first thought was that it smelled like cheese I would make in my belly button with some raw milk, if I had enough room in my belly button to make cheese, and if I urinated in there too...there is an ammonia flavor, but not as strong as most brie I've had. I guess this is because it's a washed rind cheese, only a bit of that moldy stuff remains, which is why I found the yellowing rind appealing.

I ate a bite, it left a bad taste in my mouth, had to eat something else to get rid of that flavor, and had to wash the scent off my fingers. I was tempted to toss it, but ever practical, I put I put it back in the fridge. Yesterday I opened my refrigerator and smelled something rotting. I thought it was the wilted swiss chard, but then I sniffed the Pont L'Eveque and remembered.

This morning I decided to eat some on a Trader Joe's onion bagel with Earth Balance--I'm sure that's they way french cheeses are meant to be eaten. This was when I realize the halitosis connection. Yet, I ate quite a bit of it, at first just scooping out the middle, and then going whole hog and eating the rind too. Yes, it still kind of reminds me of stuff that comes out of a cyst, but it tastes pretty good...mild as far as cheese go. And maybe because I haven't brushed my teeth yet this morning, it hasn't left an aftertaste that I can tell.

So, Yay, I guess. I'll finish it off.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - January 2013 [OLD]

Is this lentil soup the same as the stuff they used to carry in the somewhat barrel shaped can? I always bought the lentil and minestrone, which my kids loved, but it disappeared. Today there was a big display of the normal cylinder shaped cans with paper labels, but I was assuming it was just new packaging.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - January 2013 [OLD]

I tried the deep dish pepperoni pizza today in the store, and then bought one as my daughter has been asking for deep dish pizza. I was fine with the crust, actually, although it's not like real deep dish crust, as far as I can tell. I didn't actually like the sauce, and I only tried a small piece of the pizza, but my daughter enjoyed it. But it's not a huge pizza and 1/4 of it has 330 calories and 14g of fat, so I definitely didn't think it was worth the calories. I'm too busy eating a large portion of the Cinco Lanzas cheese that they still have on hand to waste time with the pizza.
